UFC.com has announced that Brock Lesnar will make his Octagon debut against former UFC Heavyweight Champion Frank Mir at UFC 81 on February 2 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Lesnar has indicated since his arrival that he wants to fight UFC's best immediately. Mir is an experienced Brazilian jiu-jitsu fighter with years of professional fight experience to his credit.

While Mir is a seasoned veteran of the sport, this will be just the second pro MMA fight for Lesnar. His first and only win came against Min Su Kim at a K-1 Hero’s event earlier this year. Recent reports indicate that Lesnar requested Mir as his first opponent. He clearly sees an opportunity to kick start his UFC career against one of the organization’s more established fighters.

Here’s a quote from UFC President Dana White about the announcement: “It’s an interesting match up. Lesnar is a great wrestler, a good athlete, and this is definitely gonna be a big test for him…. This guy’s not trying to duck anybody. He knew once he got in the UFC that he was gonna fight tough guys.”

Since returning in 2006 from a devastating motorcycle accident that nearly killed him, Mir looked sluggish and out of shape in several of his return bouts. However, that all changed in August when Mir looked to be back to his former sensational form that made him a star.

You sure as shit have a fight.

Brock will probably run through him. Post motorcycle accident Frank Mir isn't much.

Why do people keep posting non-wrestling news in here?

At least this one involves a former wreslter.

Why do people keep underselling brock?

I don't really know many UFC fighters as I haven't really been into it for too long, but i'm not convinced that Lesnar would fight someone who he didn't know he was just going to beat easily. Or am I wrong?

Either way i'd pay to see it.

Lesnar will win. Mir is no where near his former self, and they're just using the fact he's a former World Champ to hype how great Lesnar is, blah blah blah.

Why do people keep underselling brock?

As I don't speak for everyone, I will only answer with an opinion. I think people undersell him because he's really a rookie to the sport and is only getting the hype he is because of his time in the WWE. The former champion of the fake fighting sport going one on one with members of a real fighting sport...some people probably feel he's living his old WWE hype as unstoppable while others feel he doesn't have the experience to be starting so high on the ladder.

I'm with the latter because I think that without the WWE hype he is tough enough and probably the only pro-wrestler today to switch over to MMA, but he probably isn't ready to start fighting big names. To my knowledge, his only real background is in greco-roman wrestling and is a former NCAA Champion. Other guys he facing have mixtures of different styles they are fighting with. Also Brock has only won one match so far, and it was with someone as green as him (or at least from what I've been told by a friend who watches MMA regularly).

IDK, I'm not a huge fan of the sport and haven't watched a PPV since the first one around 1994. Still, that is my personal opinion on why Brock is undersold.

NCAA wrestling plus he was training under Gracie, though. A lot of MMA fighters started with less.

True, but it seems people want to throw him in at the top with veterans who do already know alot. Granted from the sounds of The One, Mir is too damaged at this point to really fight at this point, but still. If he was starting from the bottom I would give him the thumbs up, but if he's constantly fighting people who are fairly experienced, I think he could be in for an eventual asswhipping.

I dunno. Facing a former freat isn't exactly out of sorts. If he was facing someone current and near the top...I could see the point.

It's kind of like having a Cody Rhodes face a Hardcore Holly, position-wise.... :shifty:

(or I guess a more appropriate analogy could have been rookie Lashley vs Farooq?)

It's more like Carlito vs Flair, since Flair used to be worth something.

Brock could be great.

I don’t see him as much of a stand up fighter though. His ground work should be good though with his NCAA past. There’s only 1 proper fight to evaluate him, and that was a quicky, he didn’t do anything wrong in that one.

It’s a great piece of publicity regardless though, as it will get casual MMA fans interested enough to buy the PPV I guess.

But what if Brock loses? What does Dana do with him then?

Loss to a former UFC champion isn't that bad.

its going to be a big jump start for either guy.... a win for lesnar is a win against a former champ. A win for Mir means hes on his way back to where he once was.

This was the plan if Kurt Angle signed instead of going to TNA.

I SO would have tuned in for that season. Win or lose, Brock would doubtless be LOL hilarious.

Me and a buddy had some joke comments:

Me: Calling it now. Brock beats Mir via F5.

Buddy: Shooting Star off the Octagon.

Me: He better not botch it. Herb Dean will call the fight early.

I'd laugh my ass off if he hit an SSP.

And even harder if he botched it.

I don't watch much MMA but I've always liked Brock and watch his MMA fights.

Will this fight be on one of their PPVs? How much do those run?

Mr Regal

He has only had 1 mma fight.....

Frank Mir used to be the man, then the bike accident. Since he came back from that (too early one might add) he really hasn't looked good at all, in fact he has looked terrible.

tbh I would like to see Mir win this one and go on a run and start beating people. A loss wouldn't hurt Lesnar as much as it would Mir.
