What do you remember being the most surreal moment you witnessed about prowrestling outside of kayfabe?

-80's steroid scandal? (I didn't pay attention to it)
-Montreal screwjob?
-nWo (the jumping ship of numerous wrestlers)
-Owen's death? (I wasn't a huge fan of wrestling at the time. Just started watching around this time)

For me, I'm going for the Benoit tragedy. It was so surreal at the time

Easily the Benoit story. The 80s steroid scandal runs a distant second.
Benoit was a no name outside of the wrestling community. He was never a huge name, but cuz of that story he'll go down as one of the most well known pro wrestlers of all time to mainstream America because of this story.
And it's not just this year, it will live on. It's a compelling (yes as bad as it is, it is) and disturbing story. It's got legs. It will be on true hollywood stories, documentaries and movies and books for years.

The rest aren't even comparable. The nwo and screwjob stories are sheerly wrestling stories, and not big news stories. Owen's death, though tragic, was more of a wrestling story and in mainstream news was more of a one day page 6/tragedy story

But it WAS a big story. It was a big fuckin deal. I'm pretty sure he was on the cover of Time too. It wasn't Benoit big, but it was bigger than the other stories nominated in this thread.
