Anyone else psyched about this movie? Not only have they cast semi-known to well-known celebrities for the prominent roles, but now Winona Ryder signed on to play Spock's mother, Amanda Grayson. Here is the cast so far:
Chris Pine as James T. Kirk
Zachary Quinto as Spock
Karl Urban as Leonard McCoy
Simon Pegg as Montgomery Scott
Anton Yelchin as Pavel Chekov
Zoë Saldaņa as Uhura
John Cho as Hikaru Sulu
Eric Bana as Nero (the villain of the film)
Leonard Nimoy as the older ("current day") Spock
Bruce Greenwood as Christopher Pike
Winona Ryder as Amanda Grayson, Spock's human mother
Rachel Nichols in an unknown role
I'd say that's a pretty decent list of performers they've gotten. and with JJ Abrams at the helm, I'm very sure it won't disappoint.
The movie is set to take place a few years before the "Star Trek" 1960s TV series aired, possibly earlier on in Kirk's career, or his Academy days. Since Captain Pike (Kirk's immediate predecessor) is in this film, I can only imagine that the U.S.S. Enterprise will also be in the film, the original ship.
Thoughts? Comments? Trek-bashing?

Bah. That thread was either off-topic, or a discussion on Trek itself. I'm talkin' about the movie, as it has been established and verified.

So the "monster" from 1-18-08 is the life form from Star Trek 4, come to Earth to find out what happened to the whales?

I kid. Ayway, I'm remotely interested in the movie.

Yeah because Winnona Ryder fits in a Star Trek movie :| especially since there is a whopping 6 years age difference between Ryder and Quinto and she still looks young, the cast is a complete half hazard mix of good (maybe) and bad (or not bad but just not right)
Bruce Greenwood is the best thing going for it.
We'll see how it turns out though, just not psyched from the basis of the cast.

I suppose but it'll have to do a lot of wonderful things, that and Winona Ryder just doesn't strike me as fitting in this, then again that's part for the course for the entire cast. This is either going to be utterly great or a complete disaster.
Apparantly some reports say she's going to be a Vulcan too which is weird. Since Spock's mother has always been human and this is not a reboot of the Trek universe. That might just be incorrect reporting though.

Hot cast. Too bad I couldn't give a shit about Star Trek.
If Spock's mother is a vulcan someone should seriously consider whether JJ Abrams deserves to live or not
Although as far as the age thing goes, she always appeared on the young side didn't she? She did in Trek 4 anyway, isn't it something to do with living on Vulcan?
I dunno

I think that's more that Nemoy was 90 years old at the time, and it would be difficult to find a woman who was convincingly older than him. Even Geroge Lucas would be hard pressed to pull that one off without Muppets.
Star Trek was still recycling sets and animation, then. I wouldn't be surprised if the cast suffered similar budget constraints.
Meh, if they can get away with the Klingon forhead debacle they can get away with Winona Ryder as Spock's mom I guess

There was an explanation given on Star Trek: Enterprse regarding the "Klingon forehead debacle". Hey, at least they explained away 1960s budgeting (or lack thereof) with a canon explanation.
And who says Ryder is playing Spock's mother in the same time period that Quinto is playing Spock? Nimoy is playing "current-day" Spock, so it's obvious that this movie will span at least two different time periods.

Oh, and guess who else has a role in the film?

Jennifer Morrison — Cameron from House. She could play Captain Kirk’s old flame and mother of Kirk’s son, Carol Marcus (as seen on Star Trek II).

I dunno, this looks promising to me. Abrams is directing it, some big names are in it, and the basis for the plot has plenty of potential.
Or is it just because it's Star Trek that it'll suck? :p

I'm not a big fan of the original Star Trek, but this probably will be worth a look. I mean, JJ Abrams aside, I actually liked most of the Star Trek movies.
Only series I liked was Voyager, though, and even that wasn't exactly great.
But a big budget Star Trek with JJ Abrams on it could very well work.
Its a cliche but with the original movies the old odd/even thing is true. One, Three and Five are all pretty lacklustre, although the first two are both entirely superior to 5, which is pretty much an abomination.
Two, Four and Six are all ridiculously enjoyable.
Kane Knight

Even three is pretty good. IT's definitely got its merits.
Well yeah, but its not a patch on TWOK or TVH
Also Kirsty Alley suddenly changing in appearance, accent and general demeanor really confused me as a youngun

Yeah, the even/odd thing stops being true with Nemesis. It was 10 and was pretty shit. First Contact was 8, though, and it was one of the best Trek movies by far.
This will be 11, and hopefully the even/odd thing switched off with Nemesis.

Wrath of Khan was a coup that saved a series on life support. Little will stack up to it.

Simply amazing. The official theatrical teaser trailer, probably recorded with a camcorder at the movies, hence the blurriness. From what I've read, it doesn't do the actual trailer justice, as a lot of the detail is missing and fuzzy.
<object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/RllSZW_YLk8&rel=1"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/RllSZW_YLk8&rel=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>
And a picture of the new USS Enterprise, from that trailer, perfect quality (click to enlarge and view the entire image):

A lot of people I know that are not into Star Trek want to go see this. That's when you know you've done a good job at making a movie appeal to non-fans.
