Actually aside from the left leg/right leg business, Sting hooks his arm around one leg and holds onto the foot of the other leg and it's more like a X with his leg through the middle. Putting pressure on just the shins and not the knee.

Bret's Sharpshooter is more like a Texas Cloverleaf with his leg through the middle as you can see in the photos he hooks his arm around the one leg but puts his hand on the knee. He isolates the leg and puts pressure on the knee and also the shins that is why you always see him attack the knee.
