Iron Maiden are an English heavy metal (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heavy_metal_music) band from Leyton (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leyton) in the East End of London (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/London). The band were formed in 1975 by bassist (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bassist) Steve Harris (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Harris_%28musician%29), formerly a member of Gypsy's Kiss and Smiler. Iron Maiden are one of the most successful and influential bands in the heavy metal genre (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genre), having sold over 100 million albums worldwide. The band won the Ivor Novello Awards (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ivor_Novello_Awards) for international achievement in 2002. They were also inducted into the Hollywood Rock Walk (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guitar_Center#Hollywood.27s_Rock_Walk) during their tour in the United States (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States) in 2005.
The band have headlined several major events in their career, notably Rock in Rio (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rock_in_Rio), Ozzfest (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ozzfest) alongside Black Sabbath (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Sabbath), Donington (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donington_Park)'s "Monsters of Rock (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monsters_of_Rock)" and "Download (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Download_Festival)" Festivals and the "Reading and Leeds Festivals (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reading_and_Leeds_Festivals), they were the best band there."
Iron Maiden are influenced by Thin Lizzy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thin_Lizzy), UFO (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UFO_%28band%29) and Deep Purple (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deep_Purple) amongst others. Iron Maiden's mascot (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mascot), Eddie (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eddie_the_Head), is a perennial fixture in the band's sci-fi and horror-influenced album cover art, as well as in live (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Concert) shows. Eddie was drawn by Derek Riggs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Derek_Riggs) until 1992 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1992), although there have been various incarnations by numerous artists including Melvyn Grant (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melvyn_Grant). Eddie is also featured in a first-person shooter (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First-person_shooter) video game (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_game) from the band, Ed Hunter (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ed_Hunter), as well as numerous books, graphic comics and band-related merchandise.

With the high rate of metal bands being put out there, I really wish I cared about any of it.

Solid band who deserve to be more or less where they are in terms of fandom. Sometimes a bit pretentious and shit, and too much ego wanking for my tastes, but always worth a listen.

Good shit, very influential (read: 435876345675 bands that sound exactly the same out there) but some bumps along the way.

Also, for Mike The Metal Ed, 7th Son >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Powerslave
