Primus is a Grammy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grammy)-nominated American (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States) rock band (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rock_band) formed in California (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/California) in the mid-1980s. Singer and bassist (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bass_guitar) Les Claypool (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Les_Claypool) has been the only constant member, although the band has also featured Larry LaLonde (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Larry_LaLonde) (guitar) and Tim "Herb" Alexander (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tim_Alexander) (drums) for the majority of its career.
Their music is difficult to define, and while usually considered by critics to be funk metal (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Funk_metal) or alternative metal (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alternative_metal), Primus has been called everything from "thrash (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thrash_metal)-funk (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Funk) meets Don Knotts (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Don_Knotts), Jr." to "alternative rock (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alternative_rock)" to "the Freak Brothers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freak_Brothers) set to music."Les Claypool (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Les_Claypool) himself once described their music as "psychedelic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychedelic) polka (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polka)." Primus is the only band with its own ID3v1 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ID3) genre tag, as extended by Winamp (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winamp).
The diversity of their sound has allowed Primus to gain a modest segment of fans from many different rock sub-genres. They are characterized by their irreverent approach to music. Primus release their records on Claypool's Prawn Song Records (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prawn_Song_Records) label (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Record_label), a parody of Led Zeppelin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Led_Zeppelin)'s Swan Song (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swan_Song_Records). The band's catchphrase is no longer "Primus Sucks!" because the band thought it became tiring, although it was a tradition that dated back to their first album.
