- WWE's Mick Foley and Michael "P.S." Hayes recently got into a major argument during a filming of the WWE Legends show on WWE 24/7. Not much else is known, but the argument had to do with the Vince McMahon death angle from earlier this year. Foley was adamant that the angle was in bad taste while Hayes strongly defended the angle.

Foley was adamant that the angle was in bad taste

Fuck yes, you are the best Mick Foley ever.

Foley saying something that quite literally hundred of thousands of other people have said before does indeed qualify him as god.

Um, I like you Matthew, you know that, but shouldn't someone be looking for opportunities to praise Mick Foley?

As for this particular scenario, the angle was in bad taste. I mean, it didn't particularly offend me, and it was the first taste of the Attitude era in a long time, but it was only really interesting because of the potential. There was no real reason to do it. Michael Hayes is probably defending the angle because he's an employee of the company.

I think Foley is right, it was in poor taste.

But this is just him thinking in was stupid, like most people, I just dont see how this makes Foley god.

Praise Foley all you want, but at least have a good reason.

If i'm not mistaken, wasn't everyone curious to see how it was going to turn out, talking about "potentially either the best or worst storyline of the year" up until the Benoit incident? I honestly remember everyone being interested in it until that happened a week later, then all of a sudden it was in "bad taste."

God always looks kinda fat and hoboish in that robe and beard dealie.

And as far as Holier than thou, I mean, he is God.

So Foley meets the criteria.

At the time, the angle was perfect, I'm not really sure why people think it was in poor taste. To be fair, an exploding limo isn't exactly original either.
But Kennedy getting a push and Mcmahon being off TV for a while was inviting. Benoit's death was unfortunate and tragic, but the limo came before hand. I cannot see why it is in poor taste. I have been a fan of Foley for a long while but cannot see where he is coming from on this.
I realise he is one of the few who will stand up to Vince (and the company in general) but is it really in poor taste?

Where they went with it and chopped in the biggest storyline of the year to put over a midget, who is entertaining but can't have a match I would take seriously, just seems stupid.

Roll on Shane taking the reigns of the company, can't wait.

With the commonality of death in wrestling, and the fact that two deaths followed this angle pretty closely, I think that kind of speaks for itself.

I know people say "Vince couldn't have predicted the future," But within minutes of the limo blowing up, people were already predicting a wrestling death would end it. Why? Because deaths in pro wrestling are about as hard to predict as a full moon.

So, yeah. If you can't think of a single reason people might think it was in poor taste....

Kane Knight
12-16-2007, 10:51 AM
Then again, with Vince, I'm surprised he hasn't "faked his death" again yet. You know, by a WWE camera crew coming in and finding his family dead, and him hanging from a weight machine.

Kane Knight
12-16-2007, 10:53 AM
Actually, I'd kind of laugh at that, but it wouldn't exactly be WITH Vinnie. :D

Chris Benoit should have committed suicide himself instead of killing his wife and kid.

While not funny, this statement would almost fall into the "good" category, what with hindsight and all.

So its now poor taste to do a death angle on the off-chance that someone might die soon after? If it was the other way round and Benoit (or anyone) had died the week before the limo explosion then yes I agree it would haven been extremely poor taste.

Not only that but whilst there are comparitivley more deaths related to wrestling than the average, but theres an awful lot of people involved in wrestling these days. Everyone's going to die one day, me, you, everyone on this board, unfortunately punctuated by the recent untimely loss of Pepsiman (R.I.P).

If The Rock was found dead tomorrow, would that be classed as a wrestling related death? For many years he was the industry's top performer (or one of a few at the very top anyway).

You say that predicting deaths in wrestling isn't hard, can you point to one post here that predicted Benoit was even likely to be next?

Also its not like any of the deaths in wrestling have been limousine or bomb related (AFAIK). Its a storyline, please can the world learn how to seperate fiction from reality, death happens, its not nice, but it does.

Death should never be used. Whether Benoit happened or not, a death storyline is somwhat pushing it.

Death is acceptable on shows like Desperate Housewives, everyone knows its fake, and its not marketed at kids.

Wrestling falls into a weird area. We know its fake, but it is supposed to be real, and most of its fans are kids.

Whatever you do don't ever watch a soap opera will you, or a film. Many of these will involve death angles, also no-one forced any of them to become wrestlers, getting into the business through WWE is possibly one of the hardest things to do.

Its death, it happens, it WILL happen to you one day, the same as it WILL happen to me one day. As I said, not my favorite fact, but true none the less.

I'm sorry, but as a collective we bitch about the world thinking that wrestling is entirely fake. Ask most people whether wrestling is fake or not and they will laugh and say 'of course its fake'. The fact that it is marketed at kids is what is in poor taste, the same as them marketing sex angles at kids is in poor taste.

The off chance? Are you oblivious to the world around you?

There's an off chance that a plane will fly into a building. There's an off chance you'll get hit by lighting. There's a pretty damn good chance wrestlers will die, and specifically die young.

Yeah, yeah, I know. You said wrestlers die more than average. At the same time, you're more or less downplaying it at the same time. And continue to do so in subsequent posts.

Everyone's going to die some day. Hmmm...That's a nice, open, pointless argument that's repeated, and probably will be ad nauseum. So what? The same fatalistic argument could be argued for everything. If you're writing one of those useless pop psychology books, it's a great, trite statement.

Also, in terms of separating the real world from fiction, there are two important points:

WWE panders to a lot of children who may not fully understand the difference, especially in a field where Vince McMahon plays a character named "Vince McMahon," where they go "behind the scenes" a lot, etc.

Also, and this does tie into the previous notion, they kind of did what they did for a real death and paid tribute to him. Of course, there were a lot of differences, but they did pay tribute to him, they encouraged mourning, etc.

Ah well. You asked why anyone would have a problem with the angle, and you've been given several answers. You can complain that they're not valid, disregard that they are legitimate feelings that people have, or whatever else you want.

I'm gonna go back to making Chris Benoit jokes. It's part of my coping mechanism to crack wise at dark subjects.
