View Full Version : Something that bothers me about the Edge/Matt Hardy 2005 fued.

So, I will say that this fued was probably my favorite fued in the past 6-7 years or so. They had SO MUCH to work with, there was no way it couldn't have been gold. So, the matches were awesome, the spots were awesome, the Matt/Lita and Lita/Edge promos were awesome, but there were a couple things that really bothered me about everything. When I go back and watch those matches, JR and King were being real bastards on commentary, almost so much that it took away from the matches to me. They were constantly breaking kayfabe with Matt Hardy/Internet comments. I mean, they weren't all that much out of context, but Hardy was supposed to be the super face in all of this ad it seems like all they ever did was cut the fool down. I reamember a couple specifically.
King: Think Matt and Lita will ever get back together?
JR: Maybe they can text message each other.
JR: I don't want to think of the vile thoughts going through these men's heads at the moment.
King: Hardy is probably thinking about what he's going to send to Edge in a nasty e-mail after the match.
And yes, Ill admit that they were pretty damn funny sometimes but looking back, it really took some momentum away from hardy in a time that he needed all that he could get. They were really building Edge being a vile, woman stealing asshole but were cutting down Hardy at the same time? How does that work?
ALSO, QUESTION: Would Matt Hardy have even gotten his job back if had not riled the fans into a frenzy on the internet?
It almost seemed like everyone was bitter that he developed such a giant fan base on the internet alone.
Edge > Matt Hardy
Matt's not your charismatic on the mic kinda guy, better to knock him down than build him up to a role he can't maintain

Remember that Matt was hired back as a halfass gesture. They didn't want him there, so they reminded us by taking shots at the internet and the like.

But, if I remember correctly the reason they let go of him is because "they had nothing for him". All of a sudden, this gigantic huge fucking world ending storyline developes behind the scenes that ALOT of people know about. "We Want Matt" chants are being chanted heavily during Edge matches. So, obviously after this happened they definitely 'had something for him". He comes back ripped as fuck and constantly has 4-5 star matches every week. What is there to bitch about?

Yes, and WWE really does wish all its released wrestlers the best in their future endeavors.
Well, at least he has more of a future at the wwe than macho man does

Yeah, I dunno. I figured they got there shots in at him enough when he got squashed at his return match at Summerslam. Which by the way, was one of the biggest hyped matches of that year. They ruined an awesome opportunity to get their revenge on Matt. Just thought it was enough I guess.

Why would they need to get revenge? They were firing a man while injured because he girlfriend cheated on him with another guy on the roster. All he did was vent.

Dunno, I felt they got revenge on him for bitching over the internet and getting WWE fans fired up for a Matt Hardy return.

Not to mention that he slandered Edge/Lita for a month or two every chance he got too. Not that he didn't have a reason...

I'm not arguing that they weren't trying to get revenge. I was just wondering aloud why Vince would feel the need to get revenge on someone in that situation. I'm not question that Vince felt that way, I just questioning why.

I know that Vince is still a carny and still has an old school mind set and at times rather get revenge than make money just to prove a point. It just amazes me how he acts.

Same. Lita ruins her seven year relationship by cheating on Matt with Edge in front of all of their mutual peers but for some reason they feel that Matt is the culprit...

Plus, at the point Edge and Matt were tight. I'm not sure if they were best friends, but Edge, Christian, and the Hardies were like a clique (not to be confused with the Kliq which shares its women). But yeah.

Well, it is understandable why he didn't do it on camera, being that Val character slept with everyone else's wives, so adultery wouldn't be a big quam of his. Now backstage, yeah that does make a bit of a problem.

No no, he was fired because they had nothing to do with him.
On a related note, it's still real to me, dammit.
As soon as they had Matt job to Edge at Summerslam via a turnbuckle spot that we had seen a million times in the past, I knew that the feud's fate was sealed. Sure they had a good match later on, but that was such a crushing blow to what should have been an excellent 3-4 month feud.

Matt Hardy's return should have happened like this:
**WEEK ONE**
Vince: Ladies and gentleman, I am a man of the people, and I've heard you chanting during Edge's matches, so I've gone ahead and rehired this man...Matt Hardy!
*Live for the Moment plays*
Matt Fact: Matt is better than Edge.
Matt Fact: Matt does not like lying whores. Therefore he does not like Amy [U]or[/I] Adam.
Vince: Matthew, is there someone you would like to thank right now?
Matt: Vince...fuck you (actually let Matt say this). If you were a man of the people, you wouldn't have fired me in the first place. You're a man after money, and you've finally done some Mattematics and realised that Matt Hardy equals money. That's why I can do whatever I want to you.
*Matt Hardy proceeds to give Vince McMahon the Twist of Fate*
Matt: There are some people that I would like to thank, though. I'd like to thank you fans, for making sure that Mattitude remained even when Matt Hardy did not. You truly did make this possible, even if Vince is only seeing dollar signs in my need for revenge.
Edge, see this old bastard (points at Vince)? This is going to be you at Summerslam, where a match has been signed off and confirmed between us. Edge, when you slept with my girlfriend, you not only betrayed me personally, but you left my career in shambles. I was released because I spoke out about the WWE's precious Lita being a filthy whore, and I got shown the door. That isn't right, Edge, and at Summerslam, the Angelic Diablo is going to punish you with the righteousness of heaven, and the fury of hell. Edge, you almost took my career from me, now I am going to take your's away from you. Live for the moment, Edge, because you don't have many left.
**WEEK TWO**
*Edge appears on the titantron*
Edge: Since this business with Matt Hardy went down, all I have heard from people is "Matt is going to kick your ass," "Matt is going to get his revenge." What the hell is with that? When I "speared" Matt's girlfriend, I did it consciously, considering all the possible consequences. Pregnancy, sure; the loss of a friendship, a possibility; Matt Hardy kicking my ass? Matt, I am 6'4, 240lbs. I'm bigger than you. I've beaten you three times at WrestleMania. I'm a former Intercontinental and United States Champion. I'm Mr. Money in the Bank, and can guarantee a World Title shot wherever and whenever I want, and I can promise you that I am smart enough to cash it in at the right time, and become a World Champion. Matt, I'm not afraid of you. I have no reason to be.
From there, you have the two face off at Summerslam, with Matt Hardy getting disqualified when he nails Edge illegally with the Money in the Bank briefcase. Matt Hardy then beats the crap out of the match, and Edge escapes as Vince McMahon orders security down to the ring to restrain Matt Hardy.
Edge wins, but Matt Hardy looks like a million bucks, and the feud continues to the payoff with Matt Hardy standing tall.

Because Val had no reason to?
I mean Edge was already divorced from Val's sister and was on his second marriage when this happened.

I think the whole thing was staged, except that matt and lita probably actually broke up and she just started dating edge. They're all still friends.

The only reason I wouldn't think that was at all true was because of how disruptive it was to the storyline. They just totally dropped the Kane/Lita thing when it happened. One minute Edge was feuding with Kane, and the next, Kane didn't seem to much care about Lita anymore.

Doubtful that it was anything less than shoot that became a work. The whole angle was based on Hardy's internet fanbase and the fans chanting his name during Edge's matches after he had been let go. WWE couldn't have planned that.
I think he even worked some indy events during his fired time.
They may all still "be friends" now, but that doesn't necessarily mean that it was a work from the start.

I think he even worked some indy events during his fired time.
And promoted one on WWE TV.
I think that had they staged that, they could have easily opted to let him do some limited indy dates. I don't think they did. Primarily because WWE doesn't view the internet as a viable promotional tool. WWE.com could be so much better used from a marketing standpoint.
Touche'.
Still, I think what happened was that Vince fired him because he didn't approve of Hardy's actions (posting all that shit on the web), and didn't want to stir the pot with Edge and Lita. When Matt started getting all those chants, Vince realized how big of a score he might be for a company like TNA, and swooped him back up.
As soon as he had him under contract again, he half-buried his ass at Summerslam.
Luckily, Matt WILL NOT DIE!

I mean Edge was already divorced from Val's sister and was on his second marriage when this happened.
I think there may have been an assumption that Edge screwed around on Val's sister, as well. I don't know the story there, but it would be interesting to see whether or not Edge and Val are buddies or not.
Also, considering that Edge is a big guy, with oodles of personality (at the time), and was involved in professional wrestling at the time of its peak (when I think he was engaged and married to Val's sister), it would be interesting to see whether or not she is hot. I'm slightly surprised we have not seen her show up on WWE TV as "Valerie Venis."
Why would "Valerie Venis" get air time when Val Venis can't even get airtime?

I thought Matt Hardy getting released was part of the angle....
Hmmm......
Anyway, I told a funny joke to a kid today. I said "Whats going on" he said not much so i said "Whats going off" and i had to explain to him that a lightswtich has an off and on switch....
How come light switches dont have the Killswitch?

I admire the zoom, zoom, zoom technique. :y:
Val actually used to get airtime once upon a time, and would it really surprise anyone if Val's non-wrestling sister got more airtime than him? :p
