Green Day is an American (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States) rock band (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rock_music) formed in 1987 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1987_in_music).The band consists of three core members: Billie Joe Armstrong (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billie_Joe_Armstrong) (guitar, lead vocals), Mike Dirnt (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mike_Dirnt) (bass) and Tré Cool (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tr%C3%A9_Cool) (drums).
Green Day was originally part of the punk rock (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Punk_rock) scene at 924 Gilman Street (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/924_Gilman_Street) in Berkeley, California (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berkeley%2C_California). Its early releases for independent label (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Independent_label) Lookout! Records (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lookout%21_Records) earned them a grassroots fanbase, some of whom felt alienated when the band signed to a major label. Nevertheless, its major label debut Dookie (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dookie) became a breakout success in 1994 and eventually sold over 10 million copies in the U.S. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.S.) alone. As a result, Green Day was widely credited, along with fellow California punk (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/California_punk) bands The Offspring (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Offspring) and Rancid (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rancid_%28band%29), with reviving mainstream interest in and popularizing punk rock in the United States. Green Day's three follow-up albums, Insomniac (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Insomniac_%28album%29), Nimrod (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nimrod_%28album%29) and Warning (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warning_%28Green_Day_album%29) did not achieve the massive success of Dookie, but they were still successful, reaching double platinum, double platinum and gold status respectively. Its 2004 rock opera (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rock_opera) American Idiot (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Idiot) reignited the band's popularity with a younger generation, selling 5 million copies in the U.S.
The band has sold over 60 million records worldwide, including 22 million in the United States (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States) alone. They also have three Grammy Awards (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grammy_Awards), Best Alternative Album (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Best_Alternative_Music_Album) for Dookie, Best Rock Album (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Best_Rock_Album) for American Idiot, and Record of the Year (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Record_of_the_Year) for "Boulevard of Broken Dreams (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boulevard_of_Broken_Dreams_%28Green_Day_song%29)."
They are currently working on their new studio album estimated to be released in 2008.

And the trend continues wherein I love the bands older stuff, but the newer stuff is weak sauce.
