Charles Hardin Holley (September 7 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/September_7), 1936 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1936) – February 3 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/February_3), 1959 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1959)), better known as Buddy Holly, was an American (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States) singer, songwriter, and a pioneer of rock and roll (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rock_and_Roll). The change of spelling of "Holley" to "Holly" came about because of an error in a contract he was asked to sign, listing him as Buddy Holly. That spelling was then adopted for his professional career.
In 2004, Rolling Stone Magazine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rolling_Stone_Magazine) ranked him #13 on their list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. Although his career was cut short, his body of work is considered among the most influential in rock.[citation needed (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)] His works and innovations were copied by his contemporaries and those who were to follow, including The Beatles (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Beatles) and The Rolling Stones (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Rolling_Stones), and had a profound influence on popular music.
