Mike Adamle joins WWE

http://www.wwe.com/content/media/images/3883682/6312592 Sportscaster Mike Adamle brings his talents to the WWE, starting with the Royal Rumble this Sunday.

As co-host of the original American Gladiators series, Mike Adamle has witnessed his fair share of punches, kicks and body slams. Good thing, too. All the better to prepare him for his latest role: WWE on-air personality.
Best known for his Gladiator role (1989 – 1996), Adamle joins the WWE broadcast team this Sunday at the Royal Rumble, where he’ll get his feet wet interviewing Superstars. From there, Adamle will join team Raw (http://www.wwe.com/shows/raw/) on Monday nights doing, as he describes it, “a little bit of everything.”

Growing up near Chicago, the sportscaster says his ties to wrestling go way back. “I remember going to see matches with my Dad and my sister,” Adamle fondly recalls. “We would watch Bobo Brazil (http://www.wwe.com/superstars/halloffame/bobobrazil/) do his move called the Coco Butt, [a head butt].”

Adamle says he appreciates the innovation of Superstars such as “Stone Cold (http://www.wwe.com/superstars/raw/stonecold/)” Steve Austin and current American Gladiators co-host Hulk Hogan (http://www.wwe.com/superstars/halloffame/hulkhogan/).
“Anytime you have an athlete who’s remembered years afterward, that’s special,” he says.

These days, Adamle admires a host of Superstars, but when pressed on which pair he’d particularly be thrilled to see clash, the man who’s covered two Olympic Games doesn’t hesitate.

“Triple H (http://www.wwe.com/superstars/raw/tripleh/) going up against Randy Orton (http://www.wwe.com/superstars/raw/randyorton/) would be a great match,” replies Adamle. “You’ve got two tremendous athletes and a lot of showmanship.”

As a former NFL (http://www.wwe.com/inside/news/adamle#) running back in the early 1970s, Adamle says he’s encouraged by the showier aspects of sports-entertainment.

“Even as a [football (http://www.wwe.com/inside/news/adamle#) player], I always felt I was an entertainer first,” he says. “After I’d make a great play on special teams, I’d try to wave to the crowd. Now, when someone scores a touchdown and celebrates, they’re penalized. In the WWE, they’re encouraged.”

Adamle’s NFL days may be behind him, but that doesn’t mean he’s confined to the couch. Several years ago, after feeling a few aches and pains and having put on some extra poundage, Adamle decided to refocus by training for a triathlon. “I finished in about 14 hours,” recalls Adamle of his first crack at the competition.

Since then, he’s competed in four more triathlons and shaved roughly two hours off his time. Despite being so fit, however, Adamle says he’s more comfortable interviewing Superstars as opposed to battling them.

“I feel like I’m not big enough to compete against these guys,” says the 5-foot-9-inch Adamle, with a chuckle. “They’d have to start me off against Hornswoggle (http://www.wwe.com/superstars/smackdown/hornswoggle/).”

Hopefully, if they keep him for longer than a month and people like him, this will turn out to be nice. For one, we could FINALLY find someone capable of doing play by play (he did awesome on AG) and replace the continuous sagging that is JR!

Though SmackDown could've used ANYONE worthwhile doing the backstage interviews (not sure who they have anymore, they replace them every month), and ECW doesn't really HAVE ANY interviewer.

But finally glad to see the WWE hire someone that people can recognize that would know SOMETHING about wrestling (even if it's a little bit). Looking forward to this.

Never saw him on American Gladiators, because we had our own version over here. At first I thought this was a publicity grab, but then I realised that Mike Adamle probably has a clue what he's doing. Definitely have him replace Todd Grisham on Heat. Then kick off JR.

I was just watching the original American Gladiators on ESPN Classic and I always enjoyed Mike Adamle's announcing. I believe he even announced some XFL games. Hope he succeeds in WWE.

The person talking about the contestants is Adamle (this is for Noid).

Thanks, darkpower. :y:

He's got a good voice. Definitely sounds more suited to commentary than backstage announcing. Here's hoping he moves up.

He kinda sounds like Michael Hayes.

I've also heard that he was a really nice person and easy to get along with.

The only problem he may have, although small, is that I've also heard that he has (or had) a small legit case of epilepsy (not sure if it's severe at all, why I say small). Dunno if that'll even be a factor, though.

By the way, the headline that Rajah gave for this listing that told me about Adamle was:

"58 Year Old announcer hired"

That was it. No mention that it was a CREDIABLE 58 year old.

Apparently Rajah wanted us to think that either Mike is too old for the job, or that it was some wrinkled fuck with liver spots that was going to be interviewing people while needing a walker to stand. Either that or I was reading too much into that headline and they just didn't think when typing that up.

Either way, this is something I'd expect out of Rajah's forum, not their news page.

Mike Adamle is the fucking man, he's gotta be doing the play by play or whatever though. No point in having him interview people backstage. I think the reason why I don't like the new American Gladiators is because himself and Csonka aren't on it

there is no room for him on raw right now unless they use him as an interviewer to replace maria if she starts wrestling more.

He has a beautiful man-voice. Very action-packed, like if Joey Styles had three testicles.

They should put him on SmackDown where they need someone.

Either or. Raw's announcer package is also blatantly stupid. I understand that Smackdown is down one JBL, but it wouldn't be an idiotic move to put him on Raw and King on Smackdown.

If Mike Adamle replaced Michael Cole, I just might watch Smackdown every now and then. Maybe.

If Mike Adamle replaced Jim Ross, I will watch RAW every Monday with my mute off. Definitely.

Another partly more plausible idea: Move Tazz back to Smackdown, then put Adamle on ECW. Just so I can hear two competent commentators at the same time, for the first time in . . . well . . . ever.

I love your avatar, just so you know...

Yeah I think this guys sounds (no pun intended but if you wanna take it that way go right the fuck ahead) like the goods!

This is good.

I know he should have gone to SmackDown or ECW but in all honesty I don't give a shit about them. I barely watch wrestling as it is and if I do it will only be RAW or PPVs.

RAW is gonna get a whole lot better. I hope he makes his way to the announcers table in his time there. Either that or kill Hogan and get back on Gladiators.

This is awesome. I always thought that he was a good announcer on the original Gladiators, and think he will do just fine on WWE programming.

Amen to that one.

It's a shame JR just signed a two-year deal. I'd mark out for Mike Adamle and Larry Csonka killing JR and King and taking their spots.
