New Line sets up new 'Nightmare'
Freddy Krueger returns to theaters
By MICHAEL FLEMING
Platinum Dunes partners Michael Bay, Brad Fuller and Andrew Form have been set by New Line to re-launch Freddy Krueger, the iconic psycho who haunts the subconscious dreams of teenagers and kills them in their sleep.

The trio will create a new franchise based on "A Nightmare Before Elm Street," the 1984 Wes Craven film.

Originally played by Robert Englund, Krueger haunted nine films and two TV series, and was New Line's most lucrative franchise until "The Lord of the Rings."

The deal comes as Bay, Fuller and Form ready for an April start for "Friday the 13th," a New Line re-launch of another iconic baddie, Jason Voorhees. "Cloverfield" star Odette Yustman has just been set to star, and Marcus Nispel will direct a script by Damian Shannon and Mark Swift ("Freddy Vs. Jason").

Both franchises will be given a complete overhaul, something that Platinum Dunes provided in the Nispel-directed "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre." New Line won't hire a writer on "Nightmare" until the writer's strike ends.

Platinum Dunes is busy. At Rogue Pictures, the producers are prepping an untitled David Goyer-directed exorcism thriller, and a "Near Dark" remake that will be directed by Samuel Bayer. Bay, Fuller and Form are also developing a Universal remake of Alfred Hitchcock's "The Birds," with Martin Campbell directing Naomi Watts.

Friday I'm not AS upset about...but NOES still brings the scary today...and if it's anyone but Englund then it will suck ass.

Hated the Chainsaw remake, hated Halloween...doubt I'll like Friday or this. Bah.

Agree with everything..except the TCM remake was pretty darn good, not the prequel though.

But Nobody can replace England ...why not just recast him.

Yeah, he's in his early 60's but there is no reason for Robert Englund to not play Freddy.. As said earlier, he is Freddy.. I don't mind the addition to the franchise but not casting Englund is a huge mistake..

Yeah. Read the article. New F13 starts filming in April, directed by the dude who re-did the Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

Indiana Jones 4 should not happen.

Yes, obviously this needs to exist.

Because movies these days exist to bring us a constant stream of pain.

OK, THAT might not suck at all. That might ACTUALLY fucking be good. but seriously tho, even if it is amazing....i agree with everyone else

Think of something fucking new already. Cloverfield was different, and it SEEMS to have worked. not saying EVERY movie should be like cloverfield but something orginal once in a while works.

Nightmare on Elm Street 4 was the tits, Hero.

First, as a huge NOES fan, I have to say that I'm against the bastardization of Wes Craven's masterpiece, and one of the most iconic stars of the screen in history.

On that note, if Hollywood is so desperate for ideas that they ARE going ahead with this, I doubt we'll see Robert Englund reprise his role as Freddy. First, he's too old. If they want to restart the SERIES, then that means sequels, prequels, and more sequels.

There are tons of talented actors in Hollywood. I think it will be an awesome challenge for them to have to search out and find one who can portray Freddy's physicality and voice.

To bring some good news to this thread....

They are getting ready to speak to actors to play Freddy...

and #1 on their list is--------Robert Englund

Websites are reporting that Englund is the first choice in casting....but my question is...

Is it a remake if you have the same guy from all the films? Or Is it a sequel/prequel?

Remake to me means---complete recasting---while hearing Englund might be back as Freddy makes me happy, it just doesnt make sense when they are saying its a remake.

I read this takes place before the freddy movies so I would love to see this as kind of a "Hannible Rising" type movie. Start him off as his normal human self and then by the end of the movie have him be officially evil Freddy Krueger.

Usually remakes are exciting because it can make a movie better (visually at least). However, there is no way you can improve upon the original. It was really that damn good...cheesy effects and all (hell, that made the movie). Only way this movie can be better is dedicated actors (which I don't see happening), and a stronger story (which sure as hell isn't Michael Bays strong point...I don't even think he knows what a plot development is).

idk...Rocky 6, Die Hard 4, Rambo 4, and the new Batman shouldn't have happen either, but all still entertained and went beyond expectation. I'm actually looking foward to it...good actor, good director, and good series.

Rocky 6 - 5/10 - Entertaining, just underwhelming.

Die Hard 4 - 7/10 - Decent action, just did not seem right, Die Hard 2 Best By The way.

Rambo 4 - Im Hopeful.

Batman Begins - 10/10 - Favorite, with all due respect to 1989 Batman, I believe this captures the true look/feel of The Dark Knight (No Pun Intended) [/color]

I'm not as big a fan of the movies as others, so I don't consider this nearly as blasphemous as others. The thing about remakes, though, is that if the director was nearly in as much love with the original as those who should be making a remake are, then they wouldn't dare do a remake, anyway. It's a bit of a paradox.

But honestly, I think I'd rather this than another ghost girl movie. Englund was great, sure, but I don't see why there could never be anyone else that could do great things with the Freddy character. Christian Bale made a great Batman, Daniel Craig made a great James Bond. There would be another guy out there who could take Freddy and not tarnish his iconic status.

Speaking of Johnny Depp, I think he is an actor that could do amazing things with the Freddy Krueger character.

My hopes for this turning out any good died when Michael Bay was attached.

100% agree with you on this. Batman had to be relaunched, one of the greatest superheros, if not the best, can not end its series on the big screen with Ahnuld as the first name on the marquee, and Clooney playing a GOD AWFUL Dark Knight.

Depp and Murphy are the two creepiest fuckers in Hollywood right now.

If you're doing a prequel, then you might want to think twice.

You want someone who is a believable young Freddy, and with all due respect to Englund, he wouldn't be it by a longshot.

Loved the first and third NOES movies. The rest were shite.

Billy Bob Thornton is an interesting choice and i'll give it a chance purely because he's delivered the goods in a lot of movies that were otherwise shite.
