ok I just started my top 100 (not really in a particular order after about 5) of bands to check out

Aesop rock is not on there because my audience already knew them.
Also didn't include bands with much radioplay.
I wrote this to a girl named Brittney who I'm currently pursuing so if the language is a little mushy you will know why...

All material written by John Michael Carico Copyright February 1st 2008

Top 100 bands? well I'm gonna take the last15 years because otherwise it'd be wayyyyyy too hard.

Pavement: genre: Jungle Indie Skater Rock
Stephen Malkmus is an indie God. When I think of Indie (in fact when most think of indie) they think of Pavement. The quintessential Indie Rock group, wiht strange happy noises made with guitars According to wikipedia :"They are often considered one of the first modern rock bands to achieve a degree of
success without the support of a major label"
Their often ludicrous lyrics remind me of Cake quite a bit and steve Malkmus voice is sooo sardonic. I love these guys. they are infectious and rock out and scream and make you wanna dance, if you don't find yourself humming these guys tunes all day, go ahead and smoke some crack because you will never be addicted to anything.

Sigur Ros genre: Ethereal post rock
YOu think lost piano is pretty? This is raindrops on rooftops.
this is the sky on starry nights. This is get down to buisness I'm ready to cry and be happy about beauty in everything. The most beautiful sounding band of all time. This is the make out band. Not the make out band of the 90s not the make out band of this decade. IT IS THE MAKEOUT BAND. They are just so melodic, so atmospheric so sensual and yet never overtly so. they are sweedish. I get lost in these and I close my eyes... . omg I'm gonna cry fuck this.

Well these aren't in any order you must listen to them all.
1. Hoppípolla" (http://www.songza.com/listen?z=a2r3-vH-jfqNjegY)

3. "Glósóli" (http://www.songza.com/listen?z=a2r3-doc1eqstMQQ) (It's like we are trudging through mud in big black boots on the way to a special little make out cabin! The climax of this song is like whoa my heart literally just fell on the floor, where is it? oh well let's keep making out we can find it later.)

4. "Svefn-g-englar" (http://www.songza.com/listen?z=a2r3-sWiJWLiSKro)

3. Bright Eyes Genre: Indie/ Folk
The greatest lyricist of our time, the bob Dylan of our age. The spokesman for our generation, Conor Oberst. He knows how to craft a song, and his voice in itself is a metaphor. The lines read like amazing poetry.

1. Waste of Paint
2. Let's not Shit Ourselves (to love or to be loved)
3. Hit the Switch
4. Bowl Of Oranges
5. False Advertisements
6. Cleanse Song
7. First Day of My Life
8. The Big Picture (starts out in a car with the radio on)
9. It's Cool We Can Still Be Friends
10. When the President Talks to God

Best Albums:
Lifted
I'm Wide Awake It's Morning
Fevers and Mirrors
Digital Ash in a Digital Urn
Cassadaga

4. Animal Collective Genre: Experimental
The way they blend voices and sounds to make you feel like something is happening inside you really gives these guys the new trip band title. It's like part Pink Floyd part Beach Boys, but all original
"Wastered"
"Who Could Win a Rabbit"
"Grass"
"The Purple Bottle"
"Peacebone"
"Fireworks"
"Derek"

All there albums are worth picking up, just download everything by them avery Tare and Panda bear (who deserves his own category)

Addendum to part!: you should check out Steve Malkmus and the Jikks' song Fractions and Feelings, but it's the only post pavement song that really caught me, he's been doing pretty awesome (and pavement may be reforming soon fxixnxgxexrxs)

Also I failed to mention that Conor of Bright Eyes is known as Rocks boy genuis because he's been writing those amazing lyrics since he was 13. He did Fevers and Mirrors when he was 18, he released lifted at 20, the double release of Digital Ash and I'm wide Awake at 23 and Cassadaga at 25. His music hs gone from acoustic demo sound to experimental recording techniques all the way to just plain leonard Cohen inspired Folk (if you don't know who Cohen is CHECK HIM THE FUCK OUT!!!)

Also Salka by Sigur Ros may have been written for you! it's on hvarf/ heim

5. Spoon
Ok remember when I said When I think Indie I think Pavement? Well, sometimes I think Spoon. You know, they're like two sides of a coin whereas Malkmus would be more the jazz Britt Daniel (spoon's lead man) would be the blues. Not that his songs are particularly sad just more saundry I suppose. Britt did some stuff with Conor from bright eyes and it made me all happy inside, but not necessarily the greatest thing for the nonnostalgic. One amazing thing about Spoon is how they've grown from more distortion and crunchy shit to trumpets, claps, all kinds of crazy amazing shit! Compare the 2007 and 1996 songs on the list. Britt Has the greatest voice for Indie I believe. Not only have they got Range, they have progression. The movie stranger than fiction is mostly Spoon

1. The Agony of Laffitte (released on Oberst's label [as in Conor {only fucking 26] owns it and has for 5 years] saddle creek)http://www.songza.com/listen?z=s3r1-b147976b8fe8513922f5f53fbe2d8518ff32d900

2. All the negatives have been destroyed 1996 (http://www.songza.com/listen?z=j0k8-675A4553555E)

3.You got Yr. Cherry Bomb (2007)

4. The Underdog

5. I turn My camera On (bass yay)

6. Someone Something (catchy!)

7. They Never Got you

8. The way we get by

9. The Ghost of you Lingers (haunting)

10. Tear Me Down http://www.songza.com/listen?z=j0k8-675B4A52525F

Albums: I'd try out GA ga ga ga ga first.

6. Desaparecidos
Punk about corporate america, the urbinzation of small towns, and just what the fuck that has to do with love. After you listen to this try and figure out who the lead singer is, then do some research and find out, and be even more amazed.
Get the entire read music speak spanish album.

7. Belle and Sebastian
YOu've heard them in Juno. They did the entire soundtrack to Storytelling. Scottland voted them the best band to ever come from there. They have a knack for hiding dark lyrics and telling wonderful stories in happy harmonies. A giant line up of like 8 people and their simple song structure sometimes seems to question why but then you realize what all is going into each song and you get it.
I don't know how to narrow this down but oh man just get all their albums!!!

1.I'm A Cuckoo
2. Get Me away from here I'm dying
3. Stay loose
4.Women's Realm
