View Full Version : Did Amy Winehouse deserve album of the year?

I think she did. I hate to make this topic so close to that John Mayer one, but Back to Black is a seriously solid album. I know she's a heroin addict and all that, but I think that's all condusive to music. She has an amazingly soulful and powerful voice that's hard to ignore, and I like the bit of a hip hop twist she has in a lot of her songs.

How many of you have actually heard the album? If you don't think she should have won, what do you think should have?

The only award she deserves is crackhead of the year.

i don't hate her music, but i certainly don't listen to it. i gave the album a spin, and that was enough for me. is she talented? sure. should it have been album of the year? i haven't heard herbie hancock's outing so i don't know. winehouse's is better than the other nominations i guess.

That would actually require me giving a fuck, but since I don't, I won't.

Thrilla its pretty much a fact that almost everybody here at tpww listens to some form of rock music almost exclusively, couple that with her tabloid lifestyle and drug addiction and yeah, nobody here is gonna acknowledge her at all.

But yeah its a great album, she won't keep that voice if she carries on smoking crack though, bitch needs to sort herself out properly, divorcing that idiot husband of hers would be a nice start.

Probably would have been a lot easier for you not to post in this thread at all then, wouldn't it?

Well you DID ask if she deserved album of the year.

I simply provided an answer.

If you didn't want a negative answer it would have been a lot easier if you did not make this topic, no?

lol, she's been growing in popularity and getting great reviews and awards for atleast 5 years now, how the hell is that 15 minutes?

I think it's pretty silly to judge a musician based on drug usage. That'll leave you with a LOOOOOOOOOT of judging to do. Jimi Hendrix, anyone?

And yeah, you're right. I really hope she does get her shit together because I think she's capable of making some more great music. She's an E! True Hollywood Story waiting to happen.

Also KoOS, you quoted where I asked if you had heard the album or not, not the part about her deserving album of the year.

Short answer: No.

Long answer: No, no, no.

Seriously, I'm looking for a single reason so say something positive. Best I can say is that she's got decent pipes (for now), but she really doesn't do anything worthy of an award. She's so completely MotR.

Yes, I own the record.

Yes, I've listened to it. Several times. Part of me is confused as to what people see in her.

Beyond the voice, I like how her lyrics deal with 'real' things for her (rehab and whatnot) and not the fru-fru crap that I hear in a lot of mainstream music today. I was actually pretty surprised that they would give her album of the year based on that alone. She's not exactly a role model or anything.

lol I love how people who dislike her say she's talentless and go to great lengths to highlight things which have nothing to do with her actual music, rather than simply saying "not my kinda thing"

The grammy's are a shade from what they once were. Look at the utter crap that gets awards.

Even if that's true, it's still an indication of good reviews.

The reality of her lyrics don't really do much for me. Others do the same thing, and do it better.

I don't see the appeal to be honest aside from the tabloid antics. She was never this popular when she was just a fat Jew with no drug problems. The thing about rock stars and drugs is that traditionally bands made really good, timeless music while going off the rails. With Winehouse and Pete Doherty, who fits in here, it seems to be that the lifestyle becomes noteworthy and the album sales afterwards.

I don't know anyone who bought this album which makes me suspect that it was people whose only exposure to popular music is through glossy magazines and newspapers. i.e. middle-aged people. It's almost cynical therefore, in a way, when you think what acting like a prick does for your record sales.

I didn't even buy the album, for the record. I burned it off a girl at work.

In Rainbows is album of the year

Really the only CD that came out that just stood out for me as just plain good music. That and Modest Mouse's CD "We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank". Both were solid albums.

Not really a big fan of Amy Winehouse. In fact, I'm not a fan at all. So just to go with St. Jimmy's post.

It was ok, but some of those songs have been around for ages in some form.

I liked Boxer by The National and Andrew Bird's album most.

Boxer was really good but definitely not the best album of the year. Didn't hear Andrew Bird's.

I've got Back to Black - d/l for my wife. Quite honestly I find it pretty boring, I lose interest after the third song.

I don't know what it was nominated against, but if that's the best they could do, then it was a pretty shit year for music.

Foo Fighters should have won by default, but I digress.

I'm a huge Sage Francis fan but...

:wtf:

I think... I guess.. Battles, Animal Collective, The National, Liars, The Field, Apparat, the Knife..... those are all good choices

But I really think Panda Bear was album of the year.

As far as mainstream....

probably Bruce Springstein or Alison Kraus and Robert Plant.

Nah, she didn't deserve it. She's not horrible, but nowhere near the best album.
