View Full Version : Serious question: Chikara

How do people watch that shit and enjoy it and then shit on WWE for being "illogical", "unfunny" and "childish"? Same with TNA in some cases.

They don't take themselves seriously, I get that, but neither does WWE. I just don't understand the logic here...

"LOLZ THEY IS HAVING A SLOW MOTIONZ MATCH!"

"DUDE! WHAT TEH FUCK!? A MIDGET LIKE A CARTOON!? GRRRRZ WWE SUX!"

Of course, I'm only talking about people who DO have this train of thought. But seriously, it is an odd way to look at things.

at least it's meant to be illogical

(not a CHIKARA fan)

Speaking as a person that finds a sick pleasure from watching TNA's horribleness, what is Chikara? Also WWE isn't suppose to be a joke is it? TNA is a joke even if they think they aren't.

Comedy wrestling organization.

It sounds Japanese, and their sense of humor has always been fucking retarded anyway, so I think I'm gonna chalk it up to that.

It's all about the attitude, I guess. Chikara has its wrestling account grasshoppers, sure, but that's so obviously meant to be stupid. I get that Hornswoggle is meant to be stupid, too, but what you're asking is why one comedian gets up and people laugh, and another gets up, and people don't.

Comedy does work in the WWE. I've enjoyed some of their PPV ads, some of the stuff with Shelton Benjamin, Chris Jericho, The Rock, Edge, Christian, Mattitude, Santino Marella and JBL. Bobby Heenan is perhaps the greatest colour commentator of all-time. Kevin Nash is often the best part of TNA.

What Chikara accomplishes with its sense of humour, though, is equivalent to a guy laughing with his buddies. What the WWE can best be compared to, is a fat, obnoxious comedian laughing at his own lame jokes.

Nah, it's out of Philly.

A CP Munk vs. CM Punk feud is money, though. And THE BEAR~! would make a better WWE Champion than John Cena.

Another thing to keep in mind about Chikara: Is that they manage to get a lot of good will by having great wrestling matches. Say what you will about the masks, gimmicks, spotfest luchadore-style matches, but they are often a lot of fun, and it's where Mike Quackenbush, Chris Hero and Claudio Castagnoli have often been at their best.

The WWE tends to replace great matches with a midget running around a Puerto Rico with lame plane sounds. This is keeping in mind the Puerto Rican is depressed, and considering leaving the company.

Because Chikara is actually funny.

If I saw Randy Orton and John Cena go in slow motion, I'd laugh my ass off. But WWE's humour consists of gay and poop jokes, pretty much.

Not to mention Chikara usually puts on more entertaining matches.

K, few things

1) It's not a comedy promotion. Yes there is a bunch in there but it's basically a family-orientated show, no swearing etc. That's not to say there isn't violence, because there is. Some very hard-hitting stuff. And some great, heated feuds. But to call it a comedy promotion is simplfying it a bit IMHO. HUSTLE is about the closest thing to that I can think of.

2) It is at its heart a student promotion, only a bit more advanced than that. So anybody looking to check it out don't get your expectations too high - if you can live with that you'll probably find something you like.

3) WWE is meant to be the best promotion in the world. They purposely hire writers from TV etc. So you'd think they'd be a bit more consistent in delivering high-quality stuff. I imagine that's part of it.

Also it's how the promotions themselves treat the material, I think. In CHIKARA everything is accepted and treated at face value, no matter how ridiculous. WWE make a point to make sure stuff like Hornswoggle or whatever is seen and treated as ridiculous in the overall scope of things, and so it's not surprising when people react to it that way. For example, an Eddie Kingston-Claudio match will be treated the same as a Hydra - Robbie Ellis match in CHIKARA, whereas when Hornswoggle (or whatever) is out and about it's treated entirely differently to say an Edge-Batista title match.

4) Dragon Dragon > you

That's like saying CZW wasn't (I'm not sure what they do now) a "hardcore" (garbage) promotion. If the promotion is promoted as a garbage or comedy promotion, it doesn't matter what it includes. They still use the garbage or comedy as the main draw. It's not simplifying anything, it's what they sell their product on and it should be critiqued as such.

I agree. They're not marketed as a comedy promotion though.

Nice try, 1/2 *

Quackenbush is a comic book geek, all of their DVD covers are riffs on famous covers, same with almost all their artwork.

I don't know how you would go about thinking it's not a comedy promotion. Any promotion that pushes Chuck Taylor is a joke.

Just curious when's the last time you saw him? Cause he's just changed a lot the past couple years.A few monthes ago. Now I'd be lying if I didn't say he has improved since I first saw him. sometime in 2003 or so. Right after he started. Even with that any company that pushes him is clearly low on talent and/or options.

CHUCK TAYLOR FACT:

Chuck has been known to do whatever it takes to get to the top. WHATEVER it takes. Sexy Chucky T indeed.

He goes out of his way to scare little kids and frequently uses a grenade to transition. That makes him pretty damn good.

I'm adding MosCow and Dragon Dragon to my list of unbelievably awesome characters CHIKARA is responsible for.

It's sad, but all of that is more brilliant than anything you'll see in the WWE these days.

We need to start a Dragon Dragon Thread. That was just about the funniest moment I have seen, especially because they were TRYING to be over the top and stupid, and the fans were so into it.
