I think the title speaks for itself. List 'em!

- Announcers go silent for the final segment while something heinous is going on.

- Steel chairs.

Yeah, I really have nothing at the moment. Add more.

- All top line singles feuds will be amalgamated into as many variations of a straight tag team match as possible to drag the feuds out for weeks and weeks without "giving the match away for free", even though technically that's exactly what they're doing.

- A guy who wins all the time is still classified as the underdog, despite being the WWE or World Heavyweight Champion.

- The unpopular wrestler will always control the pace of a match longer than two minutes, even if he doesn't need to cheat to get the advantage.

- A wrestler talking in the ring will hear his rival's theme song, and then not react until he actually appears on stage.

Actually, insert a few random words here, you've got a Randy Orton promo.

Any amount of offense from a person on the outside of the ring not involved in the match will be infinitely more effective than the offense delivered by the actual opponent.

For instance, two guys could be have a gruelling fifteen minute match beating the hell out of each other, then out from the back comes a guy who tags the guy once behind the ref's back and the guy's automatically out cold.

When a ref gets knocked out he'll recover only when somebody is pinning the opponent and be able to count a slow 3 count.

What I love is how when they do the slow count, their arm drops for each count in slow motion - as if gravity slows down when they are recovering from being knocked out.

If someone is thrown to the outside during a TV match, there's a good chance there's a commercial break coming.

Not really a cliche but its always funny when people cut a promo out back and hold the last facial expression while they stay on air.

Vince: 'I'll send Shawn Michaels straight to the depths of HELL!'
*Holds pose and facial expression*
.......still on air 3 seconds later.....
*still holding facial expression....trynottoblink trynottoblink....*

Adverts.

*I will fight you for the title.....just not tonight* *insert sad ppv plug*

The raw main event will almost always cut to a commercial the minute someone gets knocked out of the ring.

Is it bad that when I read these, I DID hear Randy Orton saying them, even before reading the subsequent post which suggested such?

The heel is ALWAYS on top when they come back from the commercials (on Raw anyway).

Not bad, per se. Just true. The Rock was a fairly bland wrestler, as is HBK, but what made/makes them so lovable is their ability to come off as unscripted and individual. Orton has the inate ability to make not only his matches but his promos as formulaic and repetative as possible.

On topic of cliches:

In 4 weeks, a ppv is coming; regardless of the number of main event participants or match stipualtions, every competitor says: "After I win..." Never even so much as "I'll do my best," or "There's some rough competitiion..." Just the assumption of victory. Arrogant twats, the lot of 'em.

<font color=goldenrod>The announcer always gives a quick summary on the implications of the match before going to a commercial break in mid match, as if we haven't already been watching.

ie:

"WILL RIC FLAIR BE ABLE TO KEEP HIS CAREER GOING? WE'LL FIND OUT WHEN WE COME BACK"
"CAN JEFF HARDY TOP THE WWE CHAMPION? WE'LL BE RIGHT BACK!"

Just once, I'd like for there to be some sort of fuck-up that sees a match end during commercial.</font>

Mr Perfect once pinned Rick Martel during the commercial on Raw back in 1993. I don't believe they even showed the footage of the pin-fall, if I remember right, they just came back from break and said "well, this is what happens when we're live, Mr Perfect won during the break, let's get on with the show..."

Rather annoying, as it had been a long match too. All that investment for no reward.

I'm starting to doubt that it was Rick Martel though.... somebody else...

Strange especially seeing as how its harder to hold your arm up when youre in intense pain...

As for my own entry:

An authority figure will fire a lackey, announcer, or other narratively non-essential annoyance, but will grant World Title matches to the most obnoxious interlopers. And, as the odds tend to favor, said annoyance wins t their match, their title reign will be tolerated, rather than immediately terminated, and the wrestler in question fired.

I wouldn't call some of these cliches

People tend to look at cliches as a negative thing, an "idea that has been overused to the point of losing its intended force or novelty", and a lot of these things are just part of the business.

Lock Jaw
02-29-2008, 12:07 AM
Yeah, the correct thing to call them would be tropes... as that website that someone posted way up there called it.

But in a way some of these HAVE become cliches, because seeing these things over and over it begins to lose its effect on us and its interest.

Like how Hulk Hogan "hulking up" doesn't mean anything anymore, its just a cliche.
