Taker needs more hat.

QFT.

'Taker's entry felt rushed. I mean seriously, the entire point of his entry is the mind game. I found myself dismayed that he came out first. :S

Something was lost there.

03-31-2008, 12:08 AM
I thought the whole show was lackluster. It was missing something. Maybe it was how dead an outdoor crowd sounds, the MITB sucked compared to years past, triple threat was a missed opportunity, loved the Flair Michaels story, and taker edge was done right, but other than that.............2 out of 4 stars.....

El Fangel
03-31-2008, 12:12 AM

RGWhat316
03-31-2008, 12:32 AM
I actually thought it was a pretty good show. Orton retaining is worth it to me. Belfast Brawl was good, as was MITB. Flair/Shawn went over good, even though I partially thought Flair was going to win. I'll give credit to the women to working through the light problems.

Vastardikai
03-31-2008, 12:36 AM
I thought the whole thing was good. In no particular order.

Finlay-JBL: Wrong person won, but in the end, it was brutal as hell. Finlay's clotheslined the ever loving FUCK out of Layfield.

MITB: brutal match. Tons of surprises. Matt Hardy's return was great, as was the ladder moonsault. Shelton had an equipment botch during his match. Didn't see the Punk win coming. But the tangle up in the ladder spot was great.

Batista-Umaga: WTF, the fans were cheering Umaga. (yes, Umaga.) Also, the Batista Bomb was funny as hell.

HOF skit: Mike Graham taking the induction for Eddie was cool. Now, if they'd only induct Mike's long time rival Kevin Sullivan.

Snoop-a-mania skit: Mick... poor Mick... Also, Festus vs. Curly of the Three Stooges.

Carlito vs. Seagull: Possible Gooker Nominee.

Diva borefest: The arena was trying to save us when the lights went out.

Kane vs. Chavo: Poor Chavo. Poor ECW. They could have shown the Battle Royal with as short as this match was.

Micheals-Flair: I almost cried at the end of it. It was emotional. Thank god I got to laugh at the idea of David Flair being out of shape.

Triple Threat: I don't care for Cena. I don't care for Triple H. I don't care for Orton. Nothing good could have come from this match. At least it wasn't on last, and that Cena didn't win. Too bad Orton did.

Big Show-Mayweather: Poor Show. I did enjoy Mayweather getting worked over. and Mayweather was overly stiff, as always. Brass Knuckles. They better have Show Chokeslam Orton to death as compensation.

Edge-Taker: My co-winner for match of the night, with Micheals-Flair. This was the match to go on last. Taker won, but barely. Edge looked like he was on the Undertaker's level, which is rare for streak opponents. They hit each other with everything, and you could actually see the streak ending. Even in defeat, Edge came out looking good. If only Cena could make his losers look strong like that.

Rammsteinmad's Review:

Finlay VS JBL
Pretty dull match to open with to be honest. I was expecting a really brutal, hardhitting match, but this seemed to pass really quickly with nothing major happening.

Money In the Bank
Awesome as it is every year. All seven men had potential to win, so the unpredictability was great. Matt Hardy coming in made me mark out, though I was kinda expecting it. It's just a shame he didn't climb up and grab the briefcase himself. Not really much of a finish, but overall the match more than made up for it.

Batista VS Umaga
Another dull match in my opinion. At this point my friend and I decided to make some pop corn coz we were bored. Thankfully it wasn't very long. It's a shame coz this match could have been pretty good.

Kane VS Chavo Guerrero
:shifty:

Shawn Michaels VS Ric Flair
Amazing match. Really emotional and lived up to the hype. Flair seemed to pull out all the stops for this one. Michaels reluctance to win the match made for some great story telling.

Bunnymania Match Thingy
Pretty boring as ever. Was surprised that the heels won as I said to my mate "Obviously the cover girls are gonna win". But overall wasn't really interested.

Triple Threat Match
I knew Orton would win as soon as they announced this match next. Which is good coz I wanted Orton to win. Maybe the super powers of Cena and the family connections of Triple H cancel each other out. Fairly good match, but to be honest of the three triple threat matches we've had in recent years, this had to be the worst.

Floyd Mayweather VS Big Show
Surprisingly I really got into this match. I haven't watched anything involved with it, but after watching the promo video I was pretty hyped, plus the atmosphere was really great.

Edge VS Undertaker
A really good match, but coulda been better. I was really hoping Edge was gonna win, and at times really thought he had. Quite a few surprises here though. Reversing the Last Ride from the corner, and kicking out of the Tombstone. Also, I thought it was really good to finally see Edge in the main event at Wrestlemania. And not just Edge, but Smackdown as well.

All in all better than last years, but still the same in the "Good PPV, but NOT a Wrestlemania" category. A few dull matches and a few great ones. WWE's quality of Wrestlemania's has declined really badly these last few years. With next year being Wresltemania 25, hopefully WWE will change it's gameplan for the event.

I'm also disappointed by the lack of title defences at this event, same as last year. The IC title hasn't been on the line since WM18, and once again neither Tag Titles were on the line. I know they have too many titles these days, but I miss the WM's where there were enough mixtures of title and non-title matches to evenly pace the show.

I'm also happy that this year there was no Vince McMahon sighting. I'm sick of him always having high profile matches at 'Mania. This years gave some of the wrestlers a chance to shine.

Overall, I'd give it 3/5. I did enjoy it, but as said before, a good PPV but NOT a Wrestlemania.

:y:

Just got back from my friends house, and WOW I can say I feel that I got a very good show. Just some quick thoughts on some matches...

MiTB was my fav of all the MiTB, and I'm not just saying that because I'm a huge Punk fan, but I just felt the match was great because of all the athleticism and unpredicfulness.

Triple Threat I'm glad didn't close the show. When they said it was coming on I was about 85% confident Orton would retain which made me very happy. Thought it was great how the whole room I was in errupted when the kick hit trips's schnoze. Orton retaining made me a happy panda.

Edge Taker...wow, great match. Though I hated the finish, it was still a very good contest for the two. Thought Edge had it a few times which made me get very excited and stand up, but still very good match and nice way to close the show.

HBK Flair....Its hard to say. This was my MOTN. It was great in all ways. HBK brought the best out of Flair. Since I have not seen Flairs prime work, this match is my favorite one now. Before this it was the RAW match with Trips when they celebrated Flair with the belt off air. Just unreal. Crowd was hott, had the great big match feel, and the finish just kicked all kinds of ass.

I was very satisfied with this years 'Maina. It really did deliever.

That was a really great show.

MITB was probably the strongest of them all thus far. I'm a big fan of Punk winning. Genius really. He can milk that all year for his push. It was less predictable than Jeff would have been and the match really didn't miss Jeff.
Matt doing the run in was great, and by costing MVP that gives new legs to that fued, and saves face for MVP as the up and coming star who "should have" won, as he will say.
Jericho winning would be nice for a Jerimark like me and others, but hes already over and it accomplishes nothing for him. He can get a title shot and make the step up anyways. He's already got the IC title. Punk is a wiser choice.

The belfast brawl had a few great moments, was a great opener and a decent match. Stiff as hell and well done, but I wish it would have gotten a bit more brutal and gone more into brawling and less hardcore. No complaints otherwise though

Flair vs Michaels. Absolutely perfect. Prematch, match, post match. Perfect. Just amazing. All I have to say.

Mayweather vs Big Show entertained the hell out of me. It was much better than I thought it'd be. I thought it was actually pretty great for what it was, and a nice bit of entertainment and liveup to hype where a trainwreck could have been. People need to calm down and enjoy wrestling shows.

Kane squash was good enough for me.

Bunnymania. Honest to god, it was okay. I mean come on people, you need diversity on your card. Yea, it was a piss break but they did an okay job out there. And Santino and Snoop were both fun. FAR FAR better than the usual diva faire and pillow fights and shit. I also didn't mind looking at Maryse and every other divas ass and tits

Triple Threat. Pleased that it went in the middle. Shocking finish. I like it. Nice to see theres still a suprise ending in the world of wrestling. It accomplishes something. It puts Orton way over as a heel and gives him a WM win, which Cena and HHH already have plenty of. As good as it could have been. Solid match too, for the record.

Edge/Taker. Wow. Thats a main event. They really had me going. I thought Edge would do it, but I'm okay with the ending. What a great match. Long too, but worth every minute. Thats a WM main event.

Great great show. It wasn't the best Mania ever but I think it was up there and much better than I thought it could be and an excellent excellent show with a lot of great moments. Far better than the past few years. People need to chill out about things. If you're going to bitch about that show then you should probably just stop watching wrestling because you will never be pleased unless you get a time machine and go back to 2001.

redoneja
03-31-2008, 01:13 AM
I thought the Edge/Undertaker match was well developed. Since Undertaker came back from injury last year, and especially since the Royal Rumble, they've really been trying to get over the "evolution of the Undertaker". This match really put things in perspective, with Edge playing the role of the younger, more aggressive, brash champion trying to put away the Old Lion that is the Undertaker.

Edge consistently had all of Taker's signature moves scouted and consistently countered or kicked out of everything Taker is known for. However, in the end, it was Taker's "evolution" that won it for him, pulling out a gogoplata for the submission win.

Brilliant storytelling. I haven't seen a match structured like this (in mainstream US wrestling) for a long time.

I find it funny how the bitching will NEVER end.

-Cena doesn't win or main event
-CM Punk wins gets a huge push
-Jericho makes his return to Wrestlemania
-Matt Hardy does a run in
-Tons of huge spots in a ladder match
-Edge looks like a complete badass and Takers streak still stays intact
-Edge main events Wrestlemania
-Batista doesn't go anywhere near the main event
-Kane gets another title run
-Smackdown goes on last in a great main event
-Flair and Michaels mix it up and he goes out like a god

These are the things smarks on here ask for all the time, for the past year and half I've been here. From what I've observed, this show reads as the answer to the average poster on heres wet dreams. And yet they still bitch.

I haven't watched a whole WWE show in a while because, frankly, it's been pretty awful what I have seen.

But I watched this with some friends tonight and was really impressed. Obviously, the diva match was shit. The Show/Mayweather finish blew (although the match itself wasn't as much of a train wreck as I expected). But other than that, it was a good show.

Flair/Michaels was perfect. Absolutely perfect. Both men got in all of their high spots (although, looking back, did Flair do his face-first flop?), and the emotion in both men at the finish was amazing. That shot way up my list of favorite Mania matches ever.

Flair/Michaels is a match of the year candidate. It was brilliant. The wrestling was great, the storytelling was better. Michaels was perfect. His facials before the final SCM made the show.

To be fair, Flair has done shit for a while, and he was gone for quite sometime believed to never return and nobody seemed to care.

Not saying that towards you Destor, I know you're a big fan of his and always have been so it's different for you. But I think a lot of people are hamming it up for the moment. Which is fine too, I mean, what an amazing way to go out.

It's just much more sad because he's going out on a high note with a bang and a hyped up dream career ending moment. If he just dissapeared off television or quit or got injured and hung it up most people wouldn't react as much.

To me, I care either way. I'm so happy with how his career ended this weekend though. It had to happen, and it couldn't have happened any better. I would have hated to see him just fade out on Smackdown and go away unheralded after a financial squabble with Vince. Props to Flair on THE career, props to Michaels for that match, props to WWE for making it all happen.

I got so nervous when Michaels took that odd bump on the table and appeared to crack his damn ribs. Not just for his health, but mainly for the match. I got afraid that he wouldn't be able to continue on, or at least not 100% and bad luck would ruin the night for them and Flair's retirement.

Kinda a selfish thought seeing as someones ribs and possible collapsed lung were on the line, but I was really looking forward to the moment. Thankfully it seems everyones okay and the whole scenario went down without a hitch

He's no stranger to working through pain for the good of the show.
And you know he wouldn't a) let Flair down in his last match. b) let people down for Wrestlemania period, c) let people down at all

but enough HBK.

You know, I started watching wrestling in 1996 when I was in 5th grade. To me, HBK is probably like Flair is to you for "lifelong favorite" type reasons. I've seen his prime and he's just fuckin amazing. I usually say HBK is the best ever.

But as I've matured and educated myself as a wrestling fan over the years, I realize and appreciate Flair as THE man and the greatest ever. I'm glad I can appreciate his final match on this level. If this happened 5 years ago, I wouldn't feel about the way I do now. He's the best and I'm glad he got the best sendoff possible.

I went into the match totally expected HBK to carry Flair every step of the way, but I was shocked to see Flair show up. Now I don't think Flair coud've done it with out HBK, but flair was on tonight in a big way. He wanted it and REALLY rose to the occasion in a way that no 58 year old man should be able to. They put together one hell of a specticle and I can honsetly say didn't have to be carried like everyone (myslef especially) expected.

I think it's awesome that Flair passed the torch to him as "the man". Of course Flair will always be "the man", but I loved that he bestowed that honor on "the kid" instead of retiring with it. I thought it was a great show, and it did feel like a WrestleMania to me.

Loved the aesthetics of the Citrus Bowl, especially early on when it was light. Saw some people say the crowd seemed quiet on TV but they seemed noisy enough to me.

JBL vs Finlay took all the shortcuts to deliver an entertaining enough brawl. I wouldn't have opened with it personally though.

MITB was another great spotfest that pleased my houseful of casual fans.

I can't understand why Chavo was squashed like that, but I'm fine with Kane winning the belt and the match was far too short to be offensive.

Batista vs Umaga was a mediocre match which was to be expected. Blatant filler, but nobody was looking for a classic here.

BunnyMania held the casuals' interests in the Class Act household, due to Snoop Dogg's involvement and Santino's antics. Nice to see Lawler get a WrestleMania moment finally, even if it wasn't in a match.

As soon as the positioning of the Triple Threat on the card became apparent, I figured Orton was retaining... God forbid WWE would switch all three brand titles on one show, and we all knew Taker was going home with some gold. The match itself was standard 'one guy lies outside the ring inactive after a move that they would pop right back up from in any normal match' triple threat psychology, but it was a good match. Didn't live up to Triple H's "blow the roof off (if the Citrus Bowl had one)" hype.

Why did Ric Flair get himself new, spandex trunks for his last ever match?

The psychology and story of the Career Threatening Match was beautiful. The whole scene was emotional and grand. Technically the match itself didn't hold a candle to the Flair of old, but that didn't matter. It was the best performance you could reasonably expect from Flair, and this was a five star match in every way, with the exception of the actual wrestling itself... which was far from shabby in its own right. RIP "Nature Boy" Ric Flair. Long live Ric Fliehr. Whoooooooooo!

Mayweather vs Big Show was a lot better than expected. Mayweather held his end up fine, and the finish makes sense and keeps Show strong. It took the best boxer in the world a set of brass knucks to knock him down, and he was nearly up on his feet by the time the ref reached the ten count. Of course Money had to go over, but this didn't hurt Show as badly as a number of other scenarios could have.

Edge/Taker started slow, but turned into a great match by the end. Didn't like the submission finish though... as Lance Storm recently remarked, it's a less powerful visual image to not have Taker stood over his opponent at the end of a high profile match, dominant (even if the match itself was evenly matched)... one man standing, one man fallen... not both men lying on the ground... as a surprise finish, its great, but not for the final scene of a WrestleMania which is supposed to be THE decisive PPV of the year. It's a small gripe, though, and not enough to sour the show by any means.

I'd give it an 8 out of 10... really enjoyed the whole viewing experience.

One thing I noticed... no one bladed all night. Couple of trickles of hardway blood but no gushers... conscious move maybe? I at least expected Flair to bleed, classic crimson hair stylee.

To hope in on the convo, I wanted to say that I'm in the same boat as Jeri. I started watching wrestling in the 2nd grade, and there was one man that caught my eye the most who I was hooked on from that day till today, and forever and that is HBK. Sure I was a kid back then who was going off looks alone, but once I started to become and educated fan and really watch what HBK has and has become, he truly is a legend and I'm proud that I can talk about him in a later life.

Now based off storyline I was really into this match. HBK idolizes Flair his whole life. Flair is putting together his final run, I was all into it and loved it all. It was nice to finally see Flair with a direction since he has been doing nothing and just floating around. Like Jeri stated, if he where to just fade away no one would care at all, and I believe thats the truth, except for the die hards.

I still consider HBK to the be greatest in ring perfromer I have ever seen, but mind you, like I said in my short review, I have not seen Flair's prime work. I have only seen his work from 97-to now. So once I do my HW on Prime Flair, I'll let my final verdict out. But yeah, just wanted to hop in on the convo.

I dunno, I thought it a great fit to the story that they were trying to tell with the match. I think if Taker did the normal sit-up, chokeslam, tombstone, 1-2-3, then it would have killed all of Edge's momentum he had from his counters to everything else Taker was throwing out. Edge had a tremendous showing in his first Mania Main Event and I honestly don't think he was hurt by this loss, in terms of legitimacy. If anything, it solidified Edge as a viable main eventer, while also protecting and adding to the legend of the Undertaker.

But that post needs more Flair/HBM

Haha, I've been thinking about the Flair/HBM match but I really don't have anything much to add in terms of opinion. It was a beautifully crafted match, especially in regards to HBM's realization that he had to give Flair everything and that he couldn't hold back. Definitely my co-match of the night with Edge/Taker.

My only wish is that there was a little more buildup promo wise between Flair and Michaels leading in to this. I think if they had 1-2 more segments like last Monday's that the emotions coming into this would have been monstrous (as if they weren't already).

Still, tremendous match. It's really going to be weird for me for Flair to be retired. I've been a fan for the last 20 years and Flair's just always been around. I'm just glad that he got a great send-off. I know some people on here wanted this to be used to put over a new guy like Kennedy, but I think that would have been a big mistake. Flair has put over plenty of guys in his career (anyone remember when he lost to Rico on Raw?) and while this could have really elevated a younger talent, this match needed to be ONLY about Ric Flair. There will be plenty of opportunities to put guys over in the future. Flair's one of those guys who deserved something like this.

You know, awhile back, I said I wanted to see HHH vs Flair at Mania, in basically the same scenario, where HHH, against his own desires, ends his mentors career. While I really wanted it to be HBM, I didn't think it would be. I was thrilled when it was, and honestly, this match couldn't have played out any better, in any scenario. As far as matches that tell great stories, it's tied for first in my book. I'd say it's first, but being the huge HBM mark that I am (he's like Flair for Destor to me), I can't knock down his return match with HHH from Summerslam. Still, two high profile matches that told amazing stories in the ring.

Ok, sponsered by FRUITY FRUITY SKITTLES BAH GAWD, Inno's Mania Thoughts

-John Legend is good

-Finlay/JBL was a decent brawl, it needed to be it and it was. JBL winning probably means the feud continues

-MITB....awesome. Some innovative spots, with Punk and Carlito both slingshotting onto ladders to Shelton almost impaling himself tring to slingshot, the ladders in a V was cool, with Morrison trying to climb it. Matt's return was great, best way to get to MVP. Punk hits Kennedy in the face with a ladder like Kennedy did to him last year, the Punk keeps getting knocked down by won't stay down, wins MITB...awesome.

-Batista/Umaga....next

-Thanks for coming Chavo

-If you didn't get a little emotional during the Flair/Michaels match...you shouldn't be a wrestling fan, and you aren't a wrestling fan. Emotionally the match of the night, and emotionally the best Mania match in quite some time. It was a culmination of all of Flair's matches, and it was epic. Shawn pulling back on SCM to wind up in the Figure Four, to the pause before he nails him. Flair crying while being pinned, to Shawn crying...amazing.

-Snoop throws a better clothesline than JBL, thats the only thing I can say about this. That and God must be a wrestling fan, cutting the lights out.

-Thank god Orton won

-How fast can Big Show be turned face during a match? INSTANTLY. It was what it was, better than it could have been.

-This should have been the main event for Mania if they didn't want Michaels/Flair to end. Taker's entrance, awesome. Edge's entrance, awesome. Match itself? Great. Started off slow but told a great story. Edge counters all of Taker's signatures moves, even old school twice, Edge screaming at Taker that "It ends Deadman". Taker got the gogoplata over on Smackdown to where the crowd popped when he locked it on. Great ending, and Taker deserves a good run

Flair is even more of the man after reading this:

Many wrestling fans were hopeful that Ric Flair's match against Shawn Michaels would be the final match to close out last night's WrestleMania XXIV. It turns out that Flair was offered the main event spot but turned it down.

There was a pitch made by a creative team member to have the final shot of WrestleMania be a spotlight on Flair's boots and robe. However, Flair strongly disagreed with those sentiments when the idea was brought up to him during a press conference held prior to the WWE Hall of Fame convention.

Flair told reporters that nothing is more important than the title belts and insisted that his match with Michaels did not belong in the main event position.

I agree with him completely, I would have loved for him to end the night and he more than deserved it, but his ability to keep the focus on the future and the promotion and not indulge his ego shows why he is a true class act and God in the business.

That's classy. It still say fuck the title, but Flair knows better than I.

Good on flair for doing that, increases my respect for him that was already very high.

I def agree with him. I would have booked Flair/HBM last, and I think it's deserving, but I'm a mark and realize that. I know they did the right thing, they offered the spot to him. He did the right thing by taking the middle of the card.
It all went down perfectly I think.

Also, kudos to Edge and Taker for going out there and putting on the match they did to end the night. They didn't steal the show, because that's impossible given the magnitude of Flair/HBM, but they gave it their all and did as well as anyone probably could have. Under any other circumstances they prob would have been match of the night.
Great job by them keeping the main event special and not letting the show fizzle out.

They really succeeded where others have failed in that position.

Triple H/Jericho, and even Brock/Angle and a handful of others have failed in this situation, as talented as they are.

Best mania since 20 easily. Not one really duff match last night, they all served a purpose

I was disappointed with the show overall. The triple threat wasn't very good and orton retaining was just... whatever. The show ending with Taker celebrating his win was not a "Wrestlemania ending" for me. Show losing to Mayweather in the fashion he did was TERRIBLE.

While HBK vs. Flair was an absolute CLASSIC match/moment and MITB was great as was the actual Taker-Edge match, the show overall just let me down.

The main event was a great match. At first I didn't like that it started out a little slow, but the more the match progressed the better it got. So starting off slow was great. I believed Edge could have won that match... even knowing Taker's streak wasn't going to end.

It reminded me of X-Pac vs Rock for the title. I knew X-Pac wasn't going to win, but it sure seemed like he was going to.

I wonder if Sting was in attendance to see Flair's last match?

Honestly, I never saw an argument with Angle or anyone else. But yea, this makes it from general consensus to academic.

Taker/HBK will kick all kinds of ass. It really needs to happen.

I was right about that. TWICE!

Ric Flair will never wrestle a match again. I'll bet my TPWW career on it.
