Donnie Darko sequel S. Darko starts shooting May 18

UK-based sales company Velvet Octopus will be launching sales in Cannes for S. Darko, billed as the sequel to the 2001 cult hit Donnie Darko. Fox has already taken North American rights.
Daviegh Chase reprises her role as Donnie's younger sister. The cast for S. Darko also includes Ed Westwick (Son Of Rambow, Gossip Girl), Briana Evigan (Step Up 2) and Justin Chatwin (Dragon Ball).
Ash Shah's Silver Nitrate and Newmarket Capital are producing. Los Angeles-based Chris Fisher, who previously made Nightstalker and Rampage: The Hillside Strangler Murders, will direct. The budget is pegged around $10m.
The story picks up seven years after the first film (and Donnie's death) when little sister Samantha Darko and her best friend Corey are now 18 and on a roadtrip to Los Angeles when they are plagued by bizarre visions.
Fisher said in a statement: "I am a great admirer of Richard Kelly's film and hope to create a similar world of blurred fantasy and reality."
Producers have spoken to Richard Kelly about the project but he is not involved in any official capacity at this stage.
Simon Crowe of Velvet Octopus added: "I think there is a new generation of cinema-goers who will be very excited to see this film."
Crowe quipped to ScreenDaily: "Donnie's not in [the new film] but there are meteorites and rabbits."
The project starts shooting May 18.

Richard Kelly not being involved actually gives me hope this could be decent.
But no, it will suck.

What the hell is wrong with Hollywood?
They dig up movies that should never be touched and make sequels, and the only "original" movies they make are not really worth watching.
It seems that the only movies worth seeing these days is a comic book - film adaption, or something along those lines.

SO glad they reduced Donnie Darko to being a movie about Rabbits and Meteors

I want to say "OH YEAH", because it's DD...
but I'm unsure about how this will play out.
Oh well...Frank made the first one amazing. Hopefully there will be something just as cool/creepy in here. I have the mask here somewhere. :D

I am not the biggest admirer of the first film, but if we are now going to get people making redundant sequels to movies with original and artistic vision, I fear for every aspect of filmmaking now.
Who do they need the "Darko" name to do this? If they want to do a film about a girl on a road trip who has visions and lost her old brother a few years beforehand, why not fucking make it an original one? The cast also doesn't give me much faith in this.
Regardless of my position on abortion, I think this project needs to be put down before it can see light.

Jus so you know the trial for my murder is coming up, it didn't stop the film being made, but its on the same day as the premier so I'll prob be featured in some DVD extras or some shit.
This is just wrong in so many ways :nono:

Okay, so I watched this for the sheer novelty of it, and because I loved DD.
Average film. Just average. Mediocre.
As a sequel to Donnie Darko, this is a horrible fucking slap in the face. Too many plot holes, characters are very uninteresting, and things just seemed to be inserted to remind the audience of the first one.
Examples:
There's a scene with a guy talking to Donnie's sister, and she says "Why are you looking at me funny?" to which he responds "Why do you look funny?", a straight ripoff of the bunny suit/man suit conversation in the theater in DD.
Not only that...The rabbit costume in this one looks cool. It's creepy, but not as creepy as Frank's. Oh, did I say costume? I meant a mask. Just a mask, no suit, nothing. And it's seemingly inserted for NO REASON WHATSOEVER to the story, aside from the fact of having another badass-looking rabbit character.
If you are wanting a good pass the time film, just something to chill out with, it's not bad. It's far less horrible than I had imagined, if you're seeing it as a stand alone film.
That said, if you're looking for a followup to DD, stay far the fuck away from this, because Donnie's memory just got raped with a rusty railroad spike.

Its bullshit, I have only seen the trailer but seen the scene with the mask - and some fuckin emo prick coming up to some guy saying 'they made me do it'.
Hate this so much. DD is my fave film.

The original was good, this just sounds bad without Jake Gyllenhaal having a main role.
:-\
Is this as bad as it sounded? Maybe I'll acquire this by controversial means and give it a play.
I bet theres a Kanye West remix of the original movie song.

I actually thought about that after seeing the trailer. In Donnie Darko, the whole bunny suit is explained at the end. I have a feeling it's not explained in this one.
Luckily though, this will be getting/is going to get no press, it has none of the actors or anyone from the original and it is/will be (I really have no idea if it's out or not lol) straight to DVD so we can just pretend it never happened and DD can still just be it's own movie. Kinda like Dumb and Dumberer and Son of the Mask. :nono:

Actually the main female protagonist, Samantha Darko is actually the same actress from DD.

Oh. Well my thought still stands. She's not really famous or anything. No one is going to badly want to see it because the girl who played Samantha Darko reprises her role.

I know, think mainly because its gone straight to DVD?
But your right yeah.
