View Full Version : Albums that blew your mind

Requiem

Gonna be completely honest here.. up until recently I didn't really care about Nine Inch Nails. I liked what I had heard, which only consisted of their singles really.

Then they released Ghosts I-IV and it was pretty dull.. I mean, there were some songs that I really liked on it, but overall I was bored. Then they released The Slip for free and I gave it a listen.

Ok, so my interest was peaked at that point. I downloaded Downward Spiral and liked it a lot, but I really wasn't convinced yet. It was awesome, but I'm not sure if I really 'got the hype' surrounding it. I followed it up by getting With Teeth. Ok, now I was hooked. This CD was great.. but still nothing mind blowing. Still, I listened to it on repeat all day, I liked it that much. Still plan on returning to it many many times.

But now, I decided to give The Fragile a listen. Just.. holy fuck, this album kicked my ass. I mean, I liked the other stuff, but this album literally reached out and punched me in the face. I had done some research on it and it turns out it got really random reviews.. either really amazing, or completely shit.

Wow, I am still in shock still after listening to this. It blew my mind, which isn't something that happens much to me when listening to new stuff. Just the raw power behind some of the songs. Just sitting here listening to it and surfing the net, there were moments where I just stopped what I was doing and just lost myself in the music.

So I'm interested in what albums you have listened to that really blew your mind in a similar way.. just made you stop and go "Holy shit, that was fucking great." Even some of my favorite bands have never done this to me.

Brand New - The Devil And God Are Raging Inside Me

I can rarely listen to an album all the way through without skipping a track but the first time I listened to this I was just like wow.

Also when I was a kid, I would say SCIENCE by Incubus.

That Brand New album also surprised the hell out of me. Had never been a fan of theirs before, but I loved that CD and still listen to it all the time. Wasn't shocking to me, but definitely a great album.

Graceland - Paul Simon
Rage Against the Machine - Rage Against the Machine.
Throwing Copper - Live
Thriller - Michael Jackson
Unplugged in New York - Nirvana
Revolver - The Beatles
Dookie - Green Day
Smash - Offspring

All pretty mindblowing for me when I first heard them. Plenty more too.

Yeah, Lateralus is one of the few albums that also blew me away. There are some of Tool's best songs on it, but even when looked at in its entirety it is amazing. Just progressive rock at its best there.

Also.. maybe I am still 'coming down' from The Fragile here, but I want to say it is my favorite album ever, by any artist. I just can not fucking believe how this has just stopped me in my tracks. I can't even remember any specific song that I liked.. just like all together it is STILL blowing my mind. I am kicking myself in the ass for never listening to more of NIN's stuff before.

My Favorite Band, as some of you may know is Static-X

My friend Peter suggested I have a listen, I think this was about the time that Shadowzone, their third album came out, and their fourth was set to be released in a short while.

I listened to the songs "So", "Invincible","Destroy All" and "The Only"

The songs "The Only" especially blew me away, I loved it, It still is my favorite song, Its the only song I will put over "Fade to Black". I listened to the rest of the album, and there was not a single song that I did not like.

My buddy had their other two albums, I listened through Wisconsin Death Trip next, which is argued by many as thier best album, I loved it, there was a few songs I did not like as much, but were still awesome, plus this album contained "Push It" which is way up there in my favs list.

Next up was Machine, It seemed kinda toned down after I heard WDT, but was still awesome, the song "Machine" itself is very very good, if you dont have the means to listen, at least read the lyrics.

So with that said, next up was Start A War, many of you I am sure have heard this song, as it wa featured in SvR 2006, Now while this had some gems, I found it prettyn lackluster, and not retaining the energy that was WDT, the agression in Machine, or the Lyrical and Industrial metal gem that was contained in Shadowzone, now while having said this, I must say in no means is this album bad, its not as good as the first three, high expectations were its downfall for me.

Up recently, was Cannibal, I took one look at the album cover, and knew it would be badass, I was right, got it the day of release, I was blown away, it was WDT 2.0 + Half Machine, It had the agression and energy of the first two albums, "Destroyer" "Cannibal" and "Chromo-Matic" are gorgeous.

All that being said, their worst album, in my opinion is pretty fucking good.

Here is my list in order of album liking

1) Shadowzone
2) Wisconsin Death Trip
3) Cannibal
4) Machine
5) Start A War.

The Number Of The Beast - Iron Maiden. First time I ever heard Iron Maiden, totally blew me away.

Aenima - Tool. After listening listening to that album I just sat there and thought, holy fuck what the hell was that.

In Pieces - Garth Brooks. I can listen to this album over and over and not get sick of it.

The Wall - Pink Floyd. Need I say more

Ride The Lightning - Metallica. Just awesome.

Transformer - Lou Reed. It really doesn't get any better.

Too Fast For Love - Motley Crue. It's just rock n roll but I like it.

The Avalanches - Since I Left You

this album is made up i believe completely from samples of an old movie. the album should be listened to as a whole and track numbers should be disregarded, because the whole thing flows together. i got it when i was 16 and it was all crazy to me, i listened to it a lot, and then i kinda stopped, but now it is having a little renaissance and i am listening to it constantly. i think this is a truely mindblowing album... i can't even conceptualize how it was made.

Pixies - Trompe le Monde

because the only pixies i had heard at the time was Doolittle and a few songs and I didn't really think they were too good, but this album changed my mind on them totally

At the Drive In - Relationship of Command (first time I heard "One Armed Scissor" I wondered if this was what it felt like when Nirvana hit the scene? I wasn't old enough for the Grunge explosion, needless to say. If they stayed around, they'd have been the biggest band in the world right now.)
Mars Volta - Francis the Mute (The first minute my jaw hit the floor, and it never came up.)
Death - Sound of Perserverance (It's just one crazy riff after another.)
Acid Bath - When The Kite String Pops (Perhaps the most sinister lyrics of all time.)
Acid Bath - Paegan Terrorist Tactics (Much of this album, especially "Venus Blue" could have been radio smashes if it weren't for the lyrics. But God damn if it isn't great anyway.)

Personally, I like "The Hits" all his best songs on one disc.

Bad Company

Hold Your Colour by Pendulum (New album is JANK)

That was an amazing album, definitely one of the best drum and bass albums to make it to the mainstream.

The Creeps by Ed Rush and Optical, and Digital Nation by Bad Company also come to mind as pure classics that opened my eyes to Drum and Bass, and pretty much blew my mind.

I don't get how people can argue over music, like ever, its pretty much the most personally preferred thing out there, what some people despise, others will embrace, for example, I think only a few of the albums you listed are much good, because they are not in my taste of music, you posted them, because you liked them, I didn't post them, because I don't like that style.

Pretty much everything Dream Theater has released. I know it sounds DT-Markish, but I just love this freakin' band. For me, they seem to get everything spot on. The heaviness, and the mixture with other styles of music. The musicianship, the big solos, complex time signatures, long OTT songs... it just works.

Albums that absolutely blew my mind:

Brand New - Deja Entendu
I loved Your Favorite Weapon but this made them one of my favorite bands ever.

Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation
My love affair with Sonic Youth began here.

Joy Division - Closer
I liked Joy Division because I loved "Love Will Tear Us Apart" and "Ceremony" but then I heard this album and they became one of my all-time favorites.

The Mars Volta - De-Loused In The Comatorium
When this came out it was unlike anything I ever heard and it was my smoking weed anthem.

The Appleseed Cast - Low Level Owl Volumes
Two mind-blowingly beautiful albums

Death Cab For Cutie - The Photo Album
Three words: We Laugh Indoors

Incubus - Morning View
So chill

Pretty Girls Make Graves - The New Romance
Just incredible

The Cure - Disintegration

Thursday - Full Collapse

Meat Loaf - Bat Out Of Hell 2 - I grew up with this album and to me it's probably the best one he's release even surpassing the first Bat Out Of Hell. Every song on it is perfect in my eyes. A lot of people will disagree but for me you can't get much better then this.

Pink Floyd - The Wall - This was the first Floyd album I listened to fully hence why it's here ahead of the others even though I think others are better. It completely blew me away when I listened to it and introduced me to the whole idea of concept albums.

Dream Theater - Scenes From A Memory - Another concept album. Not the first DT album I heard and not their best but again it tells such a good story and the music within the album is superb. Songs like Through Her Eyes, Spirit Carries On and Home blew me away.

Iron Maiden - Somewhere In Time

Rush - 2112
