Alright, how do I convert videos to mp4 format or whaterver

Alright, so I have figured out to put videos onto an ipod, they have to be .mp4. ALRIGHT, pretty much everything on my comp. is .avi. JAWESOME. Now I know that there are free video converters or whatever, but what am I actually supposed to use?

I tried that videora or something, and I would download the program, but it wouldn't install it to the computer. I tried some others, and I could actually get them running, but I would try to 'convert' and I would get some sort of error message. Like this 'video file has no stream and cannot be downloaded; or something. And another was all about downloading the program fro winavi.com or something that I had thoguht I had just illegally downloaded.

This pissed me off a great deal when I got my ipod. Stupidness having to convert everything. WHo the fuck has mp4 files on their computer.

I'm also tryna do this kinda, I need to convert some AVI's or windows media files into whatever Adobe Premier 6 can read
