Lol one of the most overrated rappers alive...I'm not saying that you have to like him, but have you actually listened to more than ONE of his albums/mixtapes after 'Tha Carter'? Some of the stuff that he thinks of and puts on a track is insane. Period. The only thing i think Weezy needs to work on is substance. Talk about different shit like Nas or Scarface.

I think he has a terribly annoying voice, and I'm not saying I've delved deeply to find something great from him, but the stuff I have heard sounds really stupid, lame, annoying, overrated.
What are the names of some tracks that you believe are "insane"? I'd like to hear them.

i don't know i just recently got into lil wayne. i wrote him off for a long time because i couldn't stand his voice but my buddy loves him and plays him all the time and some of his lyrics are fucking hilarious (intentional or not). and sometimes he's really clever. best rapper alive? maybe not, but entertaining.

you can get it on demonoid. it's pretty much everywhere right now. there are a few stand out tracks, but his mixtapes are leagues ahead of his major releases.

Listen to all of the droughts, Dedication 1 & 2. (Dedication 2 was a mixtape that was sold at a RETAIL store).

Lil Wayne sucks, honestly one of the most over rated rappers alive.
Before I die, you will be rewarded for saying this.
I've seen Wayne evolve from Cash Money groupie to overrated POS for a long time, and I gave him all manner of chances to impress me. Anyone, anyone who uses a ghost-writer gets an automatic write off from me. And the fact that the kids let that fact slide is another example of how the rap game has become utter trash.

I've come across the underground stuff. Whereas his mainstream garbage is overrated enough, he seems to overrate himself in the underground offerings. He compares himself to, and in some cases flat-out says he's better than, alot of rappers he honestly couldn't touch with an 80ft lyrical pole.
His hubris, above all else, is what I hate about him. Most rappers are egotistical by default, but damn the ones who are way worse than they say.

download I'm me, Swizzy Remix, we takin over, dough is what I got, dipset and dipset 2 just to get a sense of his crazy rhyme schemes and lyrical content. He has no substance whatsoever, which is not what I am looking for in this kind of rap so I don't really care about that.
Buzzkill
06-04-2008, 06:58 PM
Also, about him being Ringtone Rap, I doubt Pitchfork Media, one of the most pretentious and critical music review websites out there, would give a Ringtone Rapper an 8.2 for Tha Carter II, which is far inferior to his mixtape material. Compare that to the 7-something it gave the Shins last album, one of my favorite indie albums in a long time, which on Pitchfork is a very solid rating. Just saying.

you don't need to back up a claim that a rapper use a ghost writer? hmmmmmmm.
Listen, I'm not gonna say I know the "Rap Game" like that, but I'm from Miami. I've seen lil Wayne on two occasions, both of which reveal him to be a little runt. I have several sources, and I know this sounds like a cop-out, but several sources in-da-know who are pretty damn sure Wayne uses a ghost writer. Not to mention if you merely listen to his shit from the start to now, there is clearly an unexplained gap in lyrical skill and style. With Eminem and Nas, you can track their evolution as rappers. In some cases, like Snoop Dog, you can see their evolution as they stop using ghost writers and carry their own weight - with obvious results.
I'm not gonn stay here and argue something like this. I know what time it is and you guys could dig Weezy all you want. I'll just say I know way more about the rap industry than I let on, and my thoughts, opinions, and facts shouldn't be casted off simply because I don't post anything on the subject.

Dude I'm huge into rap, and wayne may use ghost writers or whatever on his albums, i highly doubt it, but I don't think he does on his freestyles almost sure.
Now lil wayne isn't the greatest rapper alive, but his freestyles are free, and usually better than the original version, so what he is doing for music I respect, he's not out to make money off his freestyles he does it for the love of the game. He's more entertaining than a hell of a lot of other rappers.
I love eminem, nas, jay z, wu tang, ghostface, gza, aesop rock, sage francis, dose one, el-p, emc, lupe fiasco, atmosphere, and the beastie boys, more than I do wayne. I put him on the level with Kanye West, who I also really enjoy. But the thing is he brings the hottest beats from the year and freesytles over them usually with better lyrics than what the original artists spent time revising.
Buzzkill
06-05-2008, 05:09 PM
Why the fuck would he use ghostwriters on free mixtapes? No, he does not use ghostwriters.

Its just sad because rap today is pathetic, in general. People swarm to shitty, club bangers instead of something with any redeeming value. Its ridiculous.
What's a ghost writer? I'll be disappointed if it has nothing to do with that old kids show on PBS.
Buzzkill
06-05-2008, 05:24 PM

Buzzkill
06-05-2008, 05:28 PM
And how are those terrible freestyles? While they are essentially substanceless, as are most freestyles, listen to the ridiculous multisyllabic rhyme schemes he pulls off, sometimes rhyming to the same syllables for over 2 minutes. All the while staying perfectly on beat, never pausing, and usually emulating the flow of the original artist in some way. Not to mention the clever puns and double entendres he integrates into most of his songs.
And as for my taste in rap, Wayne is certainly on the lower end of my favorite artists, but for the mainstream, he is golden.
