Latest SEC filing by Activision confirms Bay Area metal quartet will be subject of next band-centric rhythm game; new James Bond game gets final title.

Earlier this year, Activision unveiled Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, the first installment in its billion-dollar rhythm series based entirely on a band. No sooner had the publisher announced the deal than speculation began to spread about what the second band-based Guitar Hero game would be. Along with Van Halen, the most mentioned group was Metallica, the legendary San Francisco Bay Area heavy-metal quartet.

Time to ride the royalty lightning! Now, talk of Guitar Hero: Metallica is no longer a case of wishful thinking or idle speculation--it's fact. When sifting through an SEC filing of Activision's over the weekend, Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst Edward Woo--associate of the highly visible Michael Pachter--uncovered a gem in the section where the Santa Monica, California-based publisher discussed its upcoming game slate.

"In fiscal 2009, we plan to publish Guitar Hero: On Tour for the NDS; Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, Guitar Hero: Metallica, and Guitar Hero IV across multiple platforms," the company said in its report. Activision's fiscal year ends on March 31, 2009, which means that the game will likely follow the holiday release of Guitar Hero: World Tour (nee Guitar Hero 4).

Guitar Hero: Metallica will be the first time a game based on the multiplatinum-selling band--which has become only slightly less famous for its antipiracy efforts as its musical achievements--has made it to retail. However, it is the second such game to be announced. In 2003, Vivendi Games--which will soon merge with Activision--struck a deal to create a vehicular combat game inspired by Metallica's music. Unconfirmed reports stated that the project had been quietly canceled in 2005.

In other news, Activision's SEC filing also confirmed that the next James Bond game, which will be developed by Treyarch using the Call of Duty 4 engine, will indeed be titled Quantum of Solace like the next James Bond film.

Who cares, just make a Metallica DLC. I hate how they're making 40 different GH games, it's going to be the next Street Fighter.

Gonna wait and see how gh IV and gh aerosmith play. If a lot of songs still feel more like work than fun, like in gh III, then I'm gonna pass.

I used to love Metallica, so I might rent it. I've only liked a couple of songs from the 90s to now. I like some of the music they used to be influenced by so it could be fun.

Activision better cool it with all the Guitar Hero games before people lost interest because they made too many. Who knows, maybe they can still be rally popular 5 years from now.

It's essentially confirmed by Metallica now.

It's alright Lars, you don't need to keep it a secret any longer. With or without your intimations, we all know Guitar Hero: Metallica will be joining the pantheon of geriatric rock simulators right alongside that other game, probably next summer. But if you really just want to get it off your chest, go right on ahead ...

When asked about the existence of the aforementioned game by MTV News, Metallica drummer and lead Napster-hater Lars Ulrich said, "... if somebody's gonna follow [GH: Aerosmith] up ... we're talking, and its exciting, and the people at Guitar Hero and Activision are rapidly becoming our best new friends in the world. You can put the rest of it together yourself." We took a moment to put those various pieces together and, sure enough, they basically assembled the retail packaging for the game. For further evidence, hit up the video after the break.

There will probably be way too much Load (pun intended :naughty: ) and Re-Load on this game anyway. Like I'm sure Fuel will be all over it, come on. They should have made it Guitar Hero: Metallica Before the Black Album

Aerosmith was was pretty fun, so I'll check this out. I think people exaggerated about the ease of GH: Aero. It was about the same level as the Default setlist on rockband. But more importantly, the notecharts were well done, and fun.

U-Warrior
08-06-2008, 10:03 PM
And I don't hate black and everything that came after it, like most metallica fans, so I don't care what they put on it.

This is awesome. But Rock Band better not suffer from lack of Met. because of this.

Harmonix has an agreement with metallica to do 15 songs. Beyond that, I'd imagine they'll be sticking to GH.

Kane Knight

Guitar Hero: Mehtallica. Nah. I'll probably get it, but I haven't even picked up Aerosmith yet, and they're by far the better band.
