View Full Version : Metallica - Death Magnetic

So the title for the new Metallica album has finally been announced, "Death Magnetic," which quite frankly is a naff title, but less so than "St. Anger."
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/9/96/Metallica_-_Death_Magnetic.jpg
With the album set to be released in September, what are your thoughts/hopes/fears for the album?
Hopefully they will produce something decent for the first time in over 10 years, even with the master of bland, Rick Rubin. It can only get better after St Anger.

My hopes are that we have a Metallica album that can be labelled a classic. Black album was ok but I regard And Justice For All the last amazing album Metallica made. Would like the songs to be a bit more harder and some ace guitar solos.
My fears are that we will have another bland album due to Metallica having their heads up their arse. The album will maybe have a few good songs but nothing more. The band have the ability to write amazing music (first four albums) but for some reason prefer this shitty style.
I hope it gets leaked on the internet tommorow and Lars head pops off.

Know whats ironic? Even if this album does suck, alot of people will still say Metallica is the shit because of how awesome they were back in the day.
I wouldnt judge a book by its cover or name, so this obviously could be a good album. If this sounds like their oldder stuff, then it would be swell. At least the name of the album isnt like "Rainbow Stripes" or something like that.

Guns N Roes will forever be greater than Metallica. One of the reasons being is that Axl has yet to release multiple cds that shit on their legacy. 1 cd 12 years in the making is better than 3 or 4 cds that make people go "Dear god, just fucking stop."

Sounds okay to me. The problem with bands like Metallica is that everyone wants to hear Master of Puppets again. Get with it people. That was released 20 years ago. This is a band that has aged and matured. St. Anger how it's moments. So this one should have to.
This album will likely get bad reviews for two reasons. 1. Everyone expects MOP again. 2. Thus far I've read very good things about the songs on this album, therefore everyone will be expecting "old" Metallica and will instantly be let down.
Myself, I'm looking forward to a good heavy metal album. Regardless if it's Metallica 1988 or Metallica 2008.

Metallica may have "matured" but the quality of their songs and albums has dropped big time. With Load, Reload and St Anger there were only 3 songs on each album that I liked. The rest of the album was garbage with bland boring shitty songs.
Puppets is held in high regard because every song on it is amazing. Kill Em All, Ride The Lighting and Justice all were excellent albums with very few bad tracks on them. These albums are timeless and the reason why people still love Metallica to this day.
The new album doesn't need to sound like the old stuff, it just needs to sound good with the majority of the songs being excellent. I hope this is the case and Death Magnetic can be regarded one of Metallica's best albums.
Stickman
06-20-2008, 05:32 PM
Firstly, I like every Metallica album (St. Anger not as much).
But I'm tired of the argument of Load and Reload being bland boring songs when you listen to the old albums half the songs on each album sound very very similar. Battery and Master of Puppets anyone? I dont' know why everybody is all "Their last 3 albums suck but Justice rules." Yes, Justice was great but the first 5 songs all sound somewhat the same.
BTW. I obvoiusly dont' know technical musical terms so its hard to elaborate on when and where other than, listen to that song, then listen to this song and they're similar.

I dont really see how that's valid. The fact that they recorded Ecstasy of Gold from this album has little bearing on what their new album will sound like as they did it a few years ago on S&M and it is also a song composed by Ennio Morricone for The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly.

The new song, The Day That Never Comes, I really don't listen to Hefield's voice because the guitar work is so beautiful/mellow in the beginning and then it just goes into a crazy solo during the end. That's worth listening to by itself.
But Hetfields voice is pretty good during it, no complaints.

Just listened to 'My Apocalypse' from the new album. The guitar work sounds almost straight out of Ride the Lightning, has a great old-school thrash feel. Hetfield's vocals seem a little out of place now that he sounds so different from how he did back in the day, but it's still a pretty kickass song. I'll bet it'd be amazing live.

Just downloaded this album.
Gotta say, I liked Saint Anger more than this.
Album sucks.

Actually, it does.
It was in the comedy section of the record stores, though.

That first track definitly sounds like they have mixed the the sound of "...and justice for all" with the black album.
In general there is a definite, old-shit sound.

Then listen to older Metallica stuff.
Remember what it sounded like when they were good.

Whilst I'm liking the album, the production - in particular the mastering - is piss poor. It is constantly clipping. Whoever mastered the album seems to have one philosophy: louder the better. There is definitly distortion there that shouldn't be... if you get me.

did you d/l it or buy it?
There isnt an actual CD rip off the CD yet. Just recording over the CD itself as it plays so the quality is shitty.

They should of got Bob Ludwig to master the album.

Just finished listening to the whole thing. Fucking amazing. 'Judas Kiss' and 'That Was Just Your Life' are all kinds of kickass, 'The End of the Line' is kinda weak, and I ended up liking 'Unforgiven III' more than I thought I was going to.
Overall, I don't think it's going to change anyone's minds as to whether or not they like Metallica. But for those of us who already do, it's awesome.

I've heard it a few times now and love it. Absolutely amazing.
However, there is one thing that pisses me off. All the doubters who said Metallica are crap, can't do it anymore, lost the plot, should go back to the old style etc... They're too fucking proud to admit that "Hey, you know what, Metallica have done a good job here", so now they fucking nitpick everything like "Oh it all sounds the same" or whatever.
Kinda agree with what Nowhere Man said, the haters will always hate, but the fans are gonna love it.

If that was directed at me saying 'It all sounds the same' or whatever, I will have you know that I think 95% of all Metallica's music sucks. Not just the new stuff. S&M is the only decent quality album they ever put out.

Gotta get this album just for The Unforgiven III. The Unforgiven II off of Reload is one of my fave tracks ever. Hell that whole album rules you all.

Yeah, Unforgiven III really should've had a different title. I still liked the song, but it doesn't fit in with the first two.
Oh, and Req, I wasn't aiming that at you specifically, but thanks for pointing yourself out.

I listened to My Apocalypse, Broken, Beat, & Scarred, & Unforgiven 3. I was like wft Metallica is playing metal again? I mean it's not up there with the first 4 I don't think, but its easily the best work they've put out since the Black album. I really didn't give a shit about Metallica anymore, but I must say I'm impressed with what I've heard from the new album.

I finally went and picked this up on Thursday, and I am impressed. I haven't even made it through the whole thing yet due to lack of time, and by how much i love the first tracks. Why "The Day That Never Comes" is the first single is beyond me? If they wanted everyone to think that sucks, buy it anyways and be blown away, then it worked.
I have been listening to that was just your life, cyanide, and all nightmare long the most so far.

That Was Just Your Life - 9/10
The End Of The Line - 7/10 - Its good, but reminds me of a Pearl Jam song...
Broken, Beat & Scarred - 8/10 - I like this lots
The Day That Never Comes - 10/10 - Love this song
All Nightmare Long - 9/10 - I love that intro.
Cyanide - 10/10 - Fucking WOW!
The Unforgiven III - 6/10 -Did not like the lyrics at all, doesnt fit the Unforgiven haunting theme the other two songs had
The Judas Kiss - 9/10 - I like this muchly
Suicide & Redemption - 10/10 - That right there is Metallica
My Apocalypse - 6/10 - Poor Closer, perhaps Suicide and Redemption should be here.
