I purchased the first two seasons for £20! and got the third on the way for £10!

FUCKING LOVE IT

Gob and Buster crack me up, as does George Sr. and even George Michael when he gets all nervous and freaks out lol. And Tobias, lol fucking top notch comedy!

Not really into the daughter or the mother.

But I fucking love the show, def my fave the at mo. Just can't believe it was cancelled. I have a feeling once the film is done, released and seen, they will shoot more seasons.

Loving it though!

Diesel Mac, you are probably the best gauge of mainstream America on TPWW judging from a lot of your Netflix stuff, which is why I guess the show got bad ratings.

Triple A
07-05-2008, 06:52 AM
Nah to be fair though, if you only saw two episodes, there is no way you can judge the show. Even I will admit it takes a little while to get into it at first. But once you are into it and you get to know all the characters, it is impossible to stop watching.

That is probably one of the reasons it didn't catch on much. If you just watch one episode, you won't fall in love I don't think. Also a lot of the humor is real subtle, which is probably why its fan base is mostly smarter people.

A lot of the humour in season 3 is based around the cancellation of the show, the reduction order for the number of episodes, etc etc. It's really kind of meta humour by the time s3 rolled around. I still enjoyed it profusely.

Oh yeah I totally picked up on all of that shit.

The stuff with Gob not being able to call his illusion Free Bird, and something else that went along with the group Arrested Development trying to sue them for the use of the name etc.

Its jus, big deal yinno? instead of trying to make fun and puns on why they were being cancelled etc, why not actually go back to what turned people onto the show in the first place? - old school AD humour like season 1.

You get cancelled, deal with it.

And at the end, with Ron Howard saying it will work as a movie. I half like that bit, half fucking hate it.

Im pretty confident after the movie they will shoot a couple more seasons anyway.

Boomer

The writers changed each season, so that was the main reason for the change in humor.

what

Jon Kano
07-09-2008, 11:05 AM
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just wrote out a hella reply to that and it fucked up.

Basically just saying, seasons 2 and especially 3, lacked the qualities of season 1 that made AD such a unique, original hit. Jus my personal opinion.

Rather than address and satire the whole cancellation thing, woulda been much better to just focus on what made it so great in the first place; the script, the stories and the fact it was either brilliant and simple, or simply brilliant.

RoXer
07-09-2008, 11:36 AM

Jon Kano

OK no fairplay, it didn't, but I'm just saying, something changed. I didn't laugh at hardly anything in any of the episodes of season 3.

RoXer
07-09-2008, 02:24 PM
Not even once at the one where GOB builds a tiny town to impress the Japanese investors (god knows they're squinters) and convince them they don't have a mole problem only to have Tobias destroy the tiny town dressed in a mole costume because he misinterpreted the word "mole" when he talked to his gym buddy who works for the CIA and wanted to spy on the Bluth family but then George Michael saves the day when he flys in on his jetpack that was ordered from Japan by George Sr. to help him escape his house arrest but then he gets frusterated when he has his surrogate open the box only to realize it's not the jetpack but a tiny town so George Sr. goes for an ice cream sandwhich but then gets stuck behind the fridge and then after the mole vs. jetpack fight we learn tht "MR. F" is not actually a spy but stands for Mentally Retarded Female and all along Rita was retarded?

You didn't laugh at any of that?

Jon Kano
07-09-2008, 02:31 PM
Of course I did, but those 6 lines depicting various scenes and whatnot out of all the 20 min 13 episodes, yinno, that was prob all of the only really funny bits, prob why you only put those ones down. To me it was jus not as awesome as season 1 and I think a lot of people would agree. Not saying thats its flat-out true, just saying there is truth to what I am suggesting.

I would tend to agree that the last season was the worst...but I still enjoyed it terribly (and I haven't watched it since it originally aired...it's been a while)

But I dunno between 1 and 2. Ive basically seen the first 5 episodes more than anything just because I've tried my best to get people obsessed.

Season 2 > 1 > 3. But it's all so close it barely matters.

mitchables
07-09-2008, 09:54 PM
do you mean punctuation?

Punctuation is a part of grammar. If you have a sentence without any punctuation, you effectively have an impact on the meanings and functions of the words contained in the sentence. Thus, you're affecting the overall grammatical context of the sentence. "Men are women really trying to help you" has a completely different meaning to "Men, are women really trying to help you?" As if, if someone else had pulled you up on it, you would say something like, "oh, don't you mean verb tenses?". It's all a part of the same area.

So don't sit there and try to be snide while you split linguistic hairs. You know what I meant.

Triple A
07-09-2008, 10:14 PM
I thought seasons 2 and 3 were just as hilarious as the first season. In fact I thought it picked up a lot and got even better in season 2.

mitchables
07-09-2008, 10:28 PM
Yeah, I loved season 2. The only reason I think people are iffy on season 3 isn't necessarily the quality of the humour, which I found to be on par with the previous seasons, but more the fact that due to the reduced episode order, it felt a bit rushed - like they didn't spend as much time on story elements as they previously would've/were able to.

Fox
07-10-2008, 12:42 AM
I agree that Season 3 is the worst of the 3, although by only a slight margin.

I didn't care much for the Mr. F storyline. It would've been good for one, maybe two episodes, but not five. That's insane. Her scenes with Michael aren't really that much fun to watch (the flying Mary Poppins KO's as the exception), and the pay off was so NOT worth it.

I also didn't like the breaking of the fourth wall shit and the pot shots at being cancelled that they kept taking. "Save Our Bluths" is one of the worst episodes they did, because it just comes off so poorly and takes us out of the show. The whole Five Andy Brothers shtick was not funny either. Everytime I saw him or one of his "brothers" it was just like Arrested Development saying "Hey, look, Andy Richter! See Andy Richter here? Check it out. We got him on the show." I don't give a fuck about that. I give a fuck about good comedy, and that wasn't funny or entertaining.

Fox
07-10-2008, 12:47 AM
All of that being said,

TOBIAS: "What are you doing up here?!"

GEORGE SR: "I'm having a fucking tea party, what does it look like I'm doing?"

(He shoves Tobias up against the wall with his hand against his mouth)

GEORGE SR: "I'm living up here and if you tell anyone about this, I will fucking kill you. Ah! Stop licking my hand, you horse's ass!"

Jessica Walter is brilliant as Lucille Bluth. She is absolutely classic. The entire cast is. It's sad how much it actually reminds me of my family, though. David Cross as Tobias is absolutely genius material. Him going through the table as Mrs Featherbottom? Classic.

That quote you gave at the end, though, way better in the extended pilot. "Illusion, Michael. A trick is what a whore does for money." *Michael points out the kids listening* "Or cocaine."

Mr. Nerfect
07-13-2008, 04:30 PM
But yes, this could be the greatest comedy film of all-time. I am serious. The show is the funniest comedy I have ever seen. OK, well, The Simpsons measures up there based on its classic episodes and iconic stature. And Scrubs will always have a soft-spot in my heart, but AD is just fucking pure genius.

One of my favourite bits from the show was when Michael thought he was picking up Lupe from the bus stop in George, Sr.'s car, which used to be George's baby back in the day, but now had nail polish from Lindsay, a skull from Buster, etc. "Lupe" gets in the car, sees the nail polish, the pick-axe and the skull with a chip in it, and starts freaking out. Jason Bateman plays it up perfectly. "Loco!"

So many brilliant scenes from this show, I could go all day. If you have not checked this show out, do it. The movie is going to make it even more popular, and careers will skyrocket more so than they already have.

Henry Winkler was great in this show, by the way. Barry is fantastic.

Season 3 was probably the weakest of the three seasons, but come on, it was still fucking great. From the first episode of Season 3: "Maybe you could take a date up there (the cabin)? "Come on, Michael, how could I convince anyway to enter that rusty old claptrap?" "....." "....." "The cabin!"

Lock Jaw

Pretty much anything and everything GOB does cracks me up, because he does everything in this overdramatic way.
