Quarantine Trailer:

The '1st Person' thing birthed by the Blaire Witch Project may get old, but as a fan of bio-terror scenarios (Resident Evil, 28 ____s Later) I'm interested in this one. It is infact a remake of a spanish horror film "REC" that dropped last year (and was well recieved, but what do latinos know).

Naomi Harris is so damn hot/cute, I had to mash up the terms (quick trivia; she was a 'Tomorrow Person', oldies will get it). And anything with Ninjas is automatic win. Stars a dude named Rain, who was seen in Speed Racer.

Underworld 3 (http://www.apple.com/trailers/sony_pictures/underworldriseofthelycans/high.html)

Lookin nice. The series always seemed like some videogame's long cutscene, I half expected a HUD to come up after major scenes awaiting my control. Anyway, I do like the series and this one looks interesting.

Then I'll let it die. However, there will now be entire threads for whatever non-DC/Marvel movie comes around that I wanna post about - and I don't wanna hear about me spamming the board with stuff nobody cares about (as in the past). I only post what perks my interest, but I also rather not have "Ninja Assassin Thread", "Underworld 3 Thread"... I was just adjusting my posts so I don't over do the boards. This way I have three ongoing threads at the most, which I figure was a nice and tidy system.

Still, I have had issues with what to put in this thread. Without a set genre of film it doesn't seem any more useful than any other specific movie thread, so I have been thinking of letting this die and keeping up the Marvel/DC thing. And in case anyone wondered, there is no "Videogame Movie News..." because those aren't pouring out the way comic movies are coming along.

Anyway thanks, criticism is welcome and this thread shut down accordingly. And I think Ninja Assassin will be cool, BTW.

Well it drops Jan. 16. The revised script cited Ninja Scroll as one of its influences, as well as Samurai Shamploo (a cool anime I never finished). That right there raises my eyebrow in a positive fashion. We'll see how it translates on film.

Crane Kicks Remade!:

There's a new Karate Kid remake in the works. Jaden Smith (Will Smith's son, daddy will produce the new film) is already attached as the titular 'Kid. But Mr. Myogi just might be portrayed by Jackie Chan.

I actually welcome this remake. There was always something about Karate Kid that I felt could be done better.

In other news, Judd Apatow is producing a horror movie. Bill Hader is writing it, and it's said to be similar in approach to the 80s cult classic Monster Squad.
The only difference is it's going to be with adults, and R rated.

Disney is returning to 2D animation with The Princess and the Frog, a tale about a chick who wants to open a restaurant. Or something. The point is Disney making a traditional feature for the first time in ages, since they began producing 3D animation almost exclusively (a rep says they didn't even have art desks anymore). After this movie drops, Disney plans on releasing a major traditional feature every two years or so.

Doubt they'll catch that 90's magic (from 91's 'Mermaid to '99's Tarzan), but it's nice to see them touching their roots.

I hope by "traditional" they mean I can look forward to finding the penis castle and SEX written in the sky.

Jeritron
02-28-2009, 02:16 PM
If they can come up with good stories, they can reach that popularity. Lion King and that string of hits were huge because of their quality, just like the ones that were huge hits in a number of different decades. Some clicked, some didn't.

thedamndest
02-28-2009, 02:38 PM
The plot sounds like it's more contemporary than the last time they tried a regular movie (I think it was Sinbad, not sure). It will potentially be something kids and adults can enjoy, like Toy Story, Shrek, etc. Star power will probably be needed as well, as it is currently in animated films, to ensure that adults are interested in the project.

It probably won't be Toy Story huge, but there's no reason for it not to succeed because I'm sure it will generate a lot of buzz and they will be sure it is actually a good movie since it doesn't have the computer animation to fall back on.

Jeritron
02-28-2009, 02:41 PM
I think them running out of traditional fairy tales also had something to do with it. Once in a while, they'd make up something obscure like Lion King and it would hit. Most of the time, though, it was adapted from a classic story.
Once they ran out, they started really stretching and trying some strange stuff.

Jeritron
02-28-2009, 02:41 PM
Seems like they found a decent one here. They should make an animated Hansel and Gretel and go for a hard R

Kalyx triaD

I hope by "traditional" they mean I can look forward to finding the penis castle and SEX written in the sky.

Putting aside easter egg blue material, I always thought Jasmine was hot. And her boobs bounced in one scene.

If they can come up with good stories, they can reach that popularity. Lion King and that string of hits were huge because of their quality, just like the ones that were huge hits in a number of different decades. Some clicked, some didn't.

They need to evolve the formula. All of their stories usually played to the backdrop of some combination of culture and past timelines. These themes reverberated throughout the feature. This isn't a hard rule, but it was cool that when you watched Aladdin the eastern music fit the setting, and The Lion King echoed many African tribal beats and vocals.

Although that works to a degree, I always wondered a few things in retrospect:

- Why can't we have an animated story that takes place in the present. Is this timeline not interesting enough? You can't tell me Disney can't forge a story without a preset legend or myth to draw from. Their 3D works took place in the present, but I never saw the Pixar stuff as proper replacements to the classic style.
- I know, and love, how Disney took broadway music style and ran with it. But I would love to see an animated musical that integrated current music trends. I'm not saying the bright-eyed hero should bust a Linkin Park-like track as he goes off to save the girl, but... well actually yeah that would be kickass.
- Disney films are most sexist movies ever. The girl needs to be saved, 98% of the time, even when the girl is the star of the show. You could bring up Pocahontas, but that was a rather weird departure for Disney on a lot of levels. Ironically, 'strong female leads' are in themselves becoming a cliche, and I honestly believe they're rarely written right (it seems the only strong female writers can produce are those with Mary Sue stigma). So I think Disney should invest in stronger females, that don't cower in fear or seem to overcompensate.
- Do celebrity voices really matter? Disney could save a shitload of cash by cutting back on giving people who's voices aren't even that distinguishing on animation. I can see the audible appeal of casting a Jason Alexander or the perfect casting of a James Earl Jones, but Demi Moore? For what? Don't argue the star-power point, it really wouldn't make a difference.

I could be wrong on any of the above points.

Jeritron
02-28-2009, 02:55 PM
They have done movies like that. They've tried going modern, or futuristic even, and it's flopped. Any change to formats has resulted in dissapointing outings. The Emperors New Groove and Treasure Planet are examples of this.
Pretty sure they incorporated modern music into these.
They've also done quite a few feminist movies. Mulan and shit like that.
They haven't quite turned the whole thing on it's heels.

I think the classic format works. It hasn't failed yet. It's the stuff they've done to step away from it that has.

Also, I think celebrity voices are very important. Not only for name brand value, but for the familiarity associated with them. Certain voices fit character types.
It's something that's always worked and is even done in the modern CGI animation features. Seems crucial to me.

thedamndest
02-28-2009, 02:58 PM
I think yes and no for strong star power. A voice is a voice, yes, but it's also a name. Arguably the best purpose of the star power is as a promotional tool. Occasionally they will make the character look like the star or have the character's facial movements match up to what the person is doing in the booth, but those are negligible.

Kalyx triaD
02-28-2009, 03:01 PM
I see it has an entity that could be evolved, 'New Groove wasn't a musical.

Jeritron

Wasn't DJ Tanner's boyfriend the voice of Aladdin? So yea, I think not everyone has to be a star. I just think it's important to have someone in your movie that reconizable. Pixar's a good example. They don't go for the biggest stars possible. They go for unique and familiar celebrity voices.
The Pixar followers usually try to load their movie with the biggest names possible, where Pixar goes for the best names possible.

Jeritron
02-28-2009, 03:03 PM
Like Tom Hanks, he's a huge name but he was picked because he was perfect for the role. I'd imagine this is the same reason Craig T Nelson and John Goodman were picked for lead roles, and Patton Oswalt. They were perfect for their role, and not picked for how much of stars they are.

I agree there. I guess "recognizable" is more what I meant.
