Just got an "update is required" message again.

What Would Kevin Do?

It's one of the misc "Improve functionality" updates. I haven't actually seen any changes, so who knows.

Nothing on its really been released. Apparantly theres some Bluetooth Mic Fix and something to do with "Life With Playstation". I imagine that because it's only a small incremental update it'll just be a few random bug fixes.

Don't know if you found it out yet, so I'm going to post this from http://www.psu.com/Mysterious-firmware-update-released-News--a0004377-p0.php for you just in case:

A mysterious firmware update, firmware 2.42, has just gone live.

To be entirely honest, we have absolutely no idea what this firmware does. It's odd; usually Sony prompts everyone before these sort of updates occur, but this time nobody has received any prior notice.

Just go download it we suppose. We'll be updating this article momentarily as more specific details on this new update arise.
Update:
It appears that the Trophies have been optimized and are loading much quicker now.
Update #2
Official word from Sony: (http://blog.us.playstation.com/2008/07/29/firmware-v242-now-available/) "This update improves the playback quality of some PLAYSTATION 3 and PlayStation format software."
Update #3
For those of you having difficulty downloading the new firmware update via the PS3, we have provided a link to download the update to your PC and transfer to your system. Click here to download firmware 2.42. (http://www.psu.com/media/PS3UPDAT.PUP)

PS3 has an update like every week, but it doesn't seem to do much for the console. It's like they released a messed up console that needs updates to do things on the 'other one'. Not hating, that's just my take on it.

If it's anything like the PSP, it's mostly to combat piracy. I'm just a little wary after the "This update may brick your console" deal.

It's supposed to improve the functionality in some games or something

It's one of those really vague updates

Anyway, to make it short, what the link was SUPPOSED to say is that it's supposed to stabilize trophies somewhat. Not sure how, but it is supposed to. That and they seem to always be trying to fix some of the firmware based BC on the higher SKU PS3s, so they seem to always release one when they get a decent amount of those fixes.

I always hoped they'd whack an emulator in for the PS2. Guess it aint happening. Yet it's more powerful than a PC if u talk to fanboys. Well then, where is the emulator.

Fuckers, why they ditch the ones that supported PS2 games.

Only reason I ever heard for them dropping PS2 support was to cut back on cost because so many people bitched about that back in the day. If I recall, the PS3 had the PS2 processor and gpu in it as well, so they saved a good bit on cost by eliminating those.

Either way, eventually there will be an emu for it. The question is not if but when. Probably won't be a sony official one though but some 1337 h4x0r who makes some kind of crack for it, ala psp emus.

But that's the thing. Most models use Software emulation instead of containing the Emotion Engine. They're scrapping even that, another step backward. Upcoming models will be stripped down further, which seems to be nothing more than a measure to reduce their losses on each unit. I'm glad I got mine early enough to at least have the software BC.

And the "cost savings" aren't really being passed on to the consumer. They've been offering the stripped down models at the same price points as old models without feature loss. That's a bad move. But, of course, I'm a biased fanboy BAWWWWWWW, so...

Speaking of which, wouldn't it be great if darkpower fixed the post that was fucking up the thread?
