Similar to my rock thread i'm asking all of tpww's RPG gamers to help me out here. Now as you can see from my user title, i've become quite enthralled by Chrono Trigger because of it's unique battle system, story and characters.
Now once I'm done C.T., I want to find an portable RPG that doesn't have the standard and for me boring traditional turn based random occurrence battles that games like most older final fantasy and phantasy star games seem to feature. I love stat building, side quests, overworlds and any other standard RPG features except for cut and dry turn based battles, any RPG's aside from Chrono Trigger like this?

I use emulators, normally snes, gba, gbc and sometimes DS. In terms of console, Xbox 360 and Wii.

Get Earthbound that one is just awesome
You might wanna pick up a harvest moon game but not an snes emulation one
IF you can get pc games (using torrents) get deus ex and planescape. I'm a big fan of RPGs and Adventure Games.
Chrono Trigger possibly is the greatest of all time, but the above are all classics that come in pretty close.

I've heard great things about earthbound (aka Mother in Japan) so thats a :y:, I always thought Harvest Moon was a farming sim of sorts tbh...

Yeah Harvest moon is partly that, but you also get married and raise kids and like become friends with people around town.

Granted it's turn based, Suikoden 1, 2, and 5, are some of the best damn RPGs ever.

Well it can be turn based, but just a more action based one ala chrono trigger or the timed button press turn based battles of Super Mario RPG LOTSS, Paper Marios and mario & luigi games.

Kinda looking in the whole quest/adventure genre but still a good suggestion.

Never really been into Tactical RPG's like FFT and the Fire Emblem series really.
I've been looking and I've noticed FF4 may be what I'm looking for, anyone recommend it?

I was really into Oblivion until the 360 crapped out on me.. It's a straight action based RPG.. I hear all of the Morrorwind games are good like that..
Fable is awesome so I'm guessing Fable 2 will be awesome too.. Supposedly in Fable 2 you'll be able to attack people during cut scenes and shit..

Final Fantasy 4 is a great game, I just hate how people are now getting into it because it was remade for DS. I really hate how classic games are being ported and remade onto handheld systems. Get it on SNES.

Seiken Densetsu 3 for SNES. Get a translation patch at zophar.net. That game is BOMB.
Terranigma is also good, as is Tales of Phantasia and Treasure Hunter G.
You could always download a PSX emulator and get Chrono Cross, as well.
