View Full Version : Foley to TNA all but confirmed

I know there was a thread on this before, but I'm too lazy to go back and find it.

Source: pwtorch.com

TNA and Mick Foley have come to an agreement. He will able to debut in TNA as soon he is contractually permitted to. His current contract with WWE expires by September 1.

Spike TV helped TNA in landing the deal with Foley, and he may have a subsidized contract. Foley could end up being involved in other projects with Spike TV.

WWE dropped Foley from television a few weeks ago after they found he was unhappy with his status in the company and likely not renewing his contract.

There was a lot of buzz among the wrestlers in the locker room this past, but TNA officials are keeping quiet on the situation. Although, they were hopeful that TNA President Dixie Carter would get a deal done with Foley.

The torch is usually pretty accurate and this sounds legitimate. I might actually have to turn into TNA for this. If Foley gets some kind of creative control it will hopefully be great. Also, Kurt Angle vs. Cactus Jack would be amazing.

I don't understand why that's so funny...

Anyways, what's with all of the hate towards Foley? He's one of the best speakers in the business, has a great mind, and he can still put on an incredible match. His little spot with Edge on Smackdown a few weeks ago was the best thing I've seen on SD since like 2002.

Instead of paying someone like Foley what I assume would be at least $500k, TNA could, you know, build up their own guys. They have the roster, they just need to not book like morons.

TNA has to realize that if Kurt Fucking Angle didn't do anything for them, NO ONE is going to. They could get get an exclusive contract with Jesus (and no, not Hey-Zues) but they'd book him to the point where no one will care.

For anyone questioning this move on Foley's part.

Less stress and more money per night, seems like an easy thing for me.

Why are TNA doing it?

Because it will make people like some of you, who don't watch impact, to watch it, at least once to see what happens, some of you may then stick with it.

It's not really that hard to see.

Will Foley at a point to the ratings? No, no one will IMO, it needs to be a slow build based on good TV, that's where they are failing, but if they sort their own shit out it could work.

I don't see Foley wrestling all that much to be honest, with this whole Vets Vs new guys thing going on, I can see him getting involved in all that jazz

BigDaddyCool
08-28-2008, 10:17 AM
What exactly is Foley going to be doing for them? He already retired a number of times from the ring. I can't believe they would have done all this just go get him behind the booth.

TNA, where WWE guys go to retire.

BigDaddyCool
08-28-2008, 10:25 AM
Also, something tells me Foley is hard to work with. Not that he yells or cusses or is a dick head. But he does seem to have an ego and holier than thou attitude. He quit WWE because Vince yelled at him, so what do you think he is going to do when someone is TNA tries to tell him what to do?

Mr. Nerfect

The sun will set this evening when it goes down.

I read the statement as meaning that Foley will debut in TNA at the earliest possible date, and that they won't fuck around and bring him in sometime next year after months and months of negotiations and teasing.

For the life of me, I can't understand the backlash against this signing. So the WWE hires Foley, and everything is peachy in the world, but TNA brings in one of the best talkers and best special occasional workers in the business, and they're fucking idiots? The idea here is to not necessarily boost ratings like it were the Attitude era. It's to get a legitimate legend like Mick Foley working with their talent, and helping to create a more credible looking environment.

Foley doing commentary with Mike Tenay in TNA would be fucking epic. I guess there is some sort of loyalty to Don West, but if the company is going to grow, and I mean really going to grow, they need a professional sounding commentary team. Mike Tenay is there, but Don West most definitely is not.

I agree with what Xero and Kane Knight and the lot are saying. Yes, Foley is an established guy and a great "name" to have. He adds value to the product not just in a TV show, but in marketing as well.

The problem is TNA does not put on a good TV show. Good wrestling? maybe. but good TV? not a prayer. So Foley's value does nothing. TNA had tried countless times to bring in made guys, but it's never panned out. WCW did the same thing 12 years ago and they started killing in the ratings. The difference is WCW had excellent TV back then. They had a ton of big names that they brought in, but they used them correctly

Foley will probably have a great debut just like Angle, just like Christian, just like Sting...but he'll eventually just fizzle out

Okay, first, yes. I understand why Foley would want it.

The problem is with the rest of it. It's "not that hard to see" that similar moves like this in the past have had a tendency to do sweet fuck all for TNA. Sure, it's probably what they're thinking, but that doesn't mean it will happen. In fact, I'd put heavy odds against it. That's the problem. It may entice a few people, but not enough to justify his price tag, unless he's working for peanuts.

I read the statement as meaning that Foley will debut in TNA at the earliest possible date, and that they won't fuck around and bring him in sometime next year after months and months of negotiations and teasing.

See, reverse engineering it to make sense, or merely taking the time to interpret something doesn't diminish the face value of the diction used. This is a common device in comedy, from vaudeville to modern comedy. Another example: While it's not hard to understand what George Bush meant when he said "most of our imports come from overseas," It's still a funnily worded statement.

That makes even less sense!?!?!?!

Here is the thing that really gets me, they have to subidize a contract to get Foley, who I can guarentee won't be working many, if any matches. Yet they barely put up a fight to keep Gail Kim, one of the people they built the Knock Outs division around, the division that gets the highest ratings lately. The best booked division in all of TNA, and one of the better booked divisions in all of wrestling. They let her go. I know she got her start in WWE, but she was a TNA talent, and they let her walk.

That is why TNA is retarded. Mick is a WWE guy (a bit ECW to, but that doesn't matter). Mick will always be seen as a WWE guy. After he gets done with TNA, he with eventually get in WWE's hall of fame with a foot note about being in TNA. That is what pisses me off. TNA is not about loyalty, it is about quick fixes.

You can bring in all the talent and names you like. As long as the promotion is called TNA and they have a six-sided ring, it will never sell. The only way Foley will make a difference is if he debuts and forcibly removes two of the ring sides. The next week they can sign somebody else to change the name.

I seriously don't get why people think the ring is an issue anyway. I mean, it's a bit of a gimmick, but really, who gives a shit how many sides it has at the end of the day. The ring doesn't make them any more or less entertaining, the wrestling any better or worse, or the booking any more or less sensible.

Plus, TNA sounds like T&A, which is probably the best marketing they have going.

But why does it need to have six sides? It makes every match inherently a gimmick match. I mean, it's good for the X-Division because it lends itself to them flying all over the place, but at the same time it's bad for the X-Division because you can become overly dependent on the size of your ring for quick spots rather than your psychology, if that makes sense.

Fox
08-28-2008, 08:11 PM
In favor of TNA, the six sided ring actually is not technically larger in total area than a normal ring. It just appears that way because of the extra sides and the camera angles.

Against them, I still say that the six sided ring is a bad idea. The four sided ring is a mainstay in pro wrestling - always has been, always will be. That's like saying let's not play Football on a rectangle anymore, lets play inside a giant square and change directions of play at half-time. It's stupid. It doesn't change anything for the game/match; it's an obvious play at "LOOK HOW DIFFERENT WE ARE!" And that's a cry for attention. And anyone who's seen Britney Spears' downfall knows that crying for attention is a sign of self destruction and loathing.

I think the name TNA is a bigger problem.

TNATARD: Dude! You want to come over and watch TNA with me!

CASUAL FAN: What's TNA?

TNATARD: Total Non Stop Action!

CASUAL FAN: .... no.

The keyword is "lame." The name sounds like something out of a crappy 80's kids cartoon show.

Xero
08-28-2008, 08:38 PM
If they booked well, the ring nor the name would matter.

There's no reason to change the ring at this point, it works exactly the same as a four sided ring. It's like saying that WWE shouldn't use the 20x20 ring because it isn't the "standard". A bigger ring or more turnbuckles doesn't hurt anything, they just expand possibilities.

If they ever did get shit sorted, then yes, the name should be changed - though if they've actually established the name, there'd be a strong argument against it. But the ring can stay the same.

This shouldn't happen until they get their booking sorted and their priorities straight though.

In defense of TNA, "Total Non-stop Action" used to be simply a subtitle after NWA: "NWA: Total Nonstop Action". Don't forget it was originally an extension of the NWA organization. Once it branched off, a drastic name change would've meant certain death and a loss of what little fanbase they originally had.

When I introduced it to my wife (back when I was watching it), I called it "TNA Wrestling", not just "TNA". My wife would've wondered why I wanted to watch "T&A" so bad. :p

IF they wanted to revert back to a 4 sided ring this Old School v Newbies fued would be the perfect way to do it. Have the vets bemoan the 6 sided ring as non-traditional, etc and have a match with the ring at stake.

Having said that, personally I don't see a problem with the ring, especially - as many have pointed out - they have bigger problems with their booking and over dependence on gimmick matches.

As for Foley, I can only hope he passes his wisdom and sound knowledge of the business on to some of the younger guys. His ability to cut a decent promo is something a lot of the talent could benefit from.

I think they need a clean slate with the writers/bookers, but we all know that's not going to happen. I mean, Dixie has said most of the blame falls on Mantel's shoulders. Ironically, she used it in defense of the whole "Fire Russo" thing. "Shows what you know...Our shitty booking comes from Dutch, not Vince!"

Paul Heyman was always hit or miss, and I don't think his booking would do much to bring in more than the smarks already interested in watching. Foley has a lot of experience with mainstream wrestling, but again, I'm not entirely sure that's what they need right now.

Pretty sure the blame for the psychology falls on the wrestlers, not russo. And none of the wrestlers you've named outside of MCMG are seen as second rate. And last time I checked neither Sabin nor Shelley is World champion material, so thats fine.

I mean I'm not saying russo isn't a big douche. They could definitly find someone to write better. But lets not kid ourselves with the psychology. That's up to the wrestlers themselves.

In Foley's defence as a worker... I know he only wrestles occasionally, but as a general rule, when he does it is a gripping feud laced with great promos and angles, and the match tends to deliver. Since he came out of retirement in 2004, I'm hard pressed to think of a bad match he's been involved with. Maybe his throwaway match against Carlito on PPV, and a couple of low profile matches on Raw here and there, but Foley hasn't had a really bad match since his broken-down days of 1999.

The years of recuperation have helped Foley, he isn't as banged up as he was during his prime as a main event drawing card. While I'm not saying he could recapture that popularity and cross over appeal again in 2008, the fact is that TNA are getting a legend who can wrestle better now than in his prime as a draw (note, not his prime as a wrestler), who can make matches seem important, who has a fantastic mind for dramatic wrestling TV, a great mind for comedic wrestling TV, tremendous promo abilities, and it's easy to forget when you consider how long Foley has been on our screens, but he's really not THAT old either.

If he hadn't retired when he did, not many people would today be saying "Foley's still wrestling?? Man, he's too old!" They might say "too broken down", but doubt they'd say "too old". Plus, while guys who are older than him have kept an active career going all those years, Foley has only had a handful of matches in the last decade, meaning he is fresher than the likes of Undertaker, Nash, Bob Holly, Sting and all the older generation of stars on TV today.

Whatever they pay for him, TNA are getting a bargain for Mick Foley. To them, he is priceless.

Notice the odd one out in my list of older "stars"?

To be honest, I think with creative freedom, Mick may be open to work a fulltime (as in a TNA fulltime) schedule as a wrestler.

And if he does, he may not be so much the star of TNA as the star-maker, but serious consideration must be given to a high-profile run on top for the Mick.

Does he still own the rights to Cactus Jack, or did he sign that over to Vince?

Wahey!

I gotta watch my TiVo'd TNA episodes one of these days. Did he appear on TV yet, or has that yet to air?

Is it wrong that when I read the ''Wahey'' I thought of Banjo Kazooie.

Foley does not need to be wrestling

Neither do Kurt Angle or Shawn Michaels but they still do.

Surely the "Have a nice day" line and smiley face, in association with Mick Foley, infringes on the Mankind intellectual property owned by WWE?

I know both individually are pretty much public domain, but used in conjunction to promote Foley? WWE may have something to say about it.

I think WWE has used the barbed wire smiley in association with Foley at some point.

Or, in Shawn Michaels' case, the Pope.
