He will be fighting Randy Couture for the UFC Heavyweight title on November 15 in Las Vegas.

Because he just beat a contender and he is a massive draw. Should they put in fighters who have zero drawing ability instead?

no, I see why they are doing it, but I thought UFC was more legit and had some kind of ranking system in place. Like I wouldn't expect a guy like Lesner to be pushed to the front that quickly.

I welcome the fight because Brock's the man, but it did surprise me

It's still a business. And as a fighter, he dominated the next challenger for the interim title for 89 seconds of a 90 second fight and he absolutely man handled a top contender for 3 rounds.

The Heavyweight division is by far the weakest the UFC has.. They brought in Cro Cop to "ignite" it, but he never got used to the cage and got beat a few times, ruining that idea.. Couture came back from retirement to fight Sylvia for the title and dominated him.. He wanted to fight Fedor, who some say is the best HW in the world, but UFC couldn't get the deal done to bring him to America, so Couture, with no "big name" fighters to fight re"retired"..

Lesnar has since come in, dominating his first fight until getting caught by an ankle by a BJJ black belt, and then totally dominated his next fight, making MMA vet Heath Herring look like shit..

It's a big money fight and one of the only options UFC has at HW..

Just like the WWE, it's who's going to make the most money in a PPV. Not who's the most deserving. Though for some reason, in UFC at least, the two tend to be one and the same rather then two totally different options.

This one seems to be the latter but I dunno...I'm not that much of a UFC fan.

I dunno how much of a chance Lesnar has of actually beating Couture, but i'd love to see that, and i'd still like to see Emelianenko vs. Couture, if that has a better chance of happening now that Couture has sorted out his contract with the UFC? I dunno.

From what I heard this isnt exactly a title match,

While technically Couture is the heavyweight champ.....Nogueira is the interim champ since Couture left.

What I heard was that the winner of Couture/Lesnar will go on to face Nogueira sometime next year to crown the undisputed champion.

Dana White said that he didnt want this to be some sort of title match. The reason this match was happening was "to show fans we can make matches that fans want to see."

White also went on to say that he GUARANTEES This will be the fight of the year.

I dunno.. I all depends on if Couture allows him to impose his will.. Lesnar is big and powerful enough to pretty much take anyone down and ride them.. Couture needs to take him out of his element by going for submissions or something.. If fighters allow Lesnar to make it his fight, he's gonna be hard to stop..

How blinkered to suggest wrestling fans shouldn't have an opinion on UFC. Maybe we should remove the TV/Movies forum too, because what the fuck do we know about making movies?

And how DARE we discuss casual topics on a wrestling forum? What the fuck do WE know about life, the universe and everything?

It's just hilarious to me that someone like Xero would mock UFC's booking like MMA thinks it's more about stats and rankings then entertainment.. He's obviously knows knowing of the workings of the UFC to even act like that.. UFC (any bigger promotion) has always booked the fight that's gonna sell PPVs.. They are not nessasarily gonna book true number one contenders cause there are no "true" rankings.. Every ranked list you see online and whatnot is someones opinion.. MMA is like wrestling in that respect cause LEGENDS don't always have to win to remain legends.. People love a hard fought loss than a boring win.. Just like Lesnar lost his first UFC fight but pretty much wiped out the notion in that 30 seconds that he was just a prowrestler..

For guys, who openly love openly fake fighting to mock a promotion they obviously know nothing about is ridiculous..

I don't think it's so much the posession of opinions as it is the way the wrestling forum sounds utterly retarded on the subject.

Not that the wrestling forum doesn't normally sound retarded, but when they start talking about the way UFC conducts business, the pretense of any competence, knowledge, or reason goes out the window.

And smarks-pretense doesn't leave much.

Here's the thing about Brock, yes - he's green. But his work ethic is pretty unparrallelled and he's a bad match up for Randy Couture. Yes, he got tapped, whatever. Randy Couture, much as I love and respect him, is not a submission fighter. All of his skills are the same skills Brock has, except Brock is bigger, stronger, and faster. Randy only has experiance which in theory will be negated by a much larger and better wrestler in Brock Lesnar.

Then again, I can imagine the "sour grapes" community on TPWW would probably just dismiss his first match if it was a win. It would have been a fluke, or a "work" or something.

Not by everyone, mind, just the people who seem to be looking for every possible excuse to slam Brock because he's not wrestling anymore.

Sylvia says he'll help train Couture for Lesnar..

What are your thoughts on Brock?

He's a beast. It's one of those things every four years or so we get a really good monster wrestler like Mark Coleman or Dan Severn. When Dan Severn first came along he was unstoppable. That's what Brock Lesnar is. He is an amazing athlete, amazing wrestler and he's huge. Now's the time to fight him while he's still learning.

Did you work out with him?

He came up for a couple of weeks. I had my elbow taken care of so I didn't get to work out with him but some of the guys did.

Who is your pick for the Randy Couture Brock Lesnar fight?

Randy always rises to the occasion. I would never bet against Randy. I want Randy to win.

NeanderCarl
09-05-2008, 01:08 PM
Well, first of all I think Taker must have some kind of training in fighting to be as feared as he is/was, even if its just basic.

Secondly, there were a lot more street fighters back in the day of UFC. You telling me Taker couldn't hammer Tank Abbott? Nowadays it is all about well honed athletes with extensive martial arts backgrounds, but in the early days of UFC you had all kinds of guys in there.

When was the MMA "teeming with bar room brawlers"? There was one. Tank Abbott. He knocked out a few tough guys and then got killed against top guys with skill.

Carl, UFC was never "teeming with barroom brawlers."

Excuse maybe the ill-fitting analogy then, but my general point was that UFC of today is a league above the UFC of yesterday in terms of athleticism, finesse, training... okay you had your Royce Gracies et al, but you also had your chancers and your general tough guys... and what is Taker if not, by most accounts, a tough guy. And a big, strong one at that. I know size means nothing, but I still think, when I remember following MMA and UFC back in the mid 90s (remember Bushido on Sky?? That was shite. I remember WCW's Sarge Craig Pittman was getting involved too, because WCW refused to let Haku do it... bit sure if he ever did though. Still, I digress...) there were guys involved who were little more than pro wrestlers themselves and whatever you may say, you can't discount the idea that Taker may have fared well for himself in THAT environment back in the day, because you just don't know. Neither do I, technically, because it didn't happen, but to flat out say "no, you're wrong, you're a cunt, get back to the fake stuff" is pretty short-sighted when it's only a hypothetical situation.

It grates me how MMA fans are so dismissive of those who know less about it than them, it's arrogant, elitist and even dorky. I never professed to be an expert or state facts from the clear blue sky, just that I wouldn't have bet against Taker back in those days. Just an opinion, and I'm entitled, even if I'm not a walking UFC encyclopedia. I have casually kept up with it since 1995, so I'm pretty confident I'm not clueless here.

I assume you mean Murray. Not really. I've met him a few times but more know him through someone else. Not the kind of people I like hanging around with. Google Dave Courtney and you'll find out why.

Oh I know Murray is a bad dude.. Had great potential and it's pathetic how he's thrown it all away for thuggery..

Brilliant heist they did though..

I didn't say he could be a top contender, just that 15 yrs ago at peak health and with a MMA scene teeming with bar room brawlers and the ilk, that he may well have picked up a win or two. Don't think that is an unreasonable thought.

Okay, the Barroom Brawlers bit's been addressed.

Taker's skills might be sufficient to intimidate the boys backstage, but that doesn't mean he could stand up to Mixed Martial Arts competition, even when it was "less physically involved."

Only if he had a broom with him in the shower.

Seems UFC is the new Wrestling, gotta be on the inside too be a cool kid.

That said I havent seen a lot of UFC, mainly a couple of the Ultimate Fighter series.

Oh and at the risk of getting back on topic I have seen all (I think) of Lesnars fights. Usualy quite entertianing too watch.

The inside? Erm.... wrong dude. You have to watch it to be able to comment on it. Pretty simple really.

UFC has become a progression for wrestling fans though. Simply because we don't have to put up with the political bullshit. A lot of the old time wrestling guys like Terry Funk and Jim Cornette all prefer MMA now too.

Heyman is apparently very into MMA. I read an article last week...

The only time Calloway is getting into MMA is when he gets complimentary UFC tickets.

Funny read though.

No doubt its a natural progression, im not gonna argue that.

And once again I only follow MMA very loosely but I would imagine as the money comes so will the politics. It seems to be a natural progression in every sport and I would be surprised (read shocked too death) if MMA was any different.

Hard to avoid in sport sadly.
