Since me and KK were arguing over that quote in that other thread, it's safe to say that if you didn't know about this game existing (or WILL exist when it drops in October), you did after that.

Thus, I think it's only fitting that we get a thread going about it:

Description:
The LittleBigPlanet experience starts with players learning about their character’s powers to interact physically with the environment. There are obstacles to explore, bits and pieces to collect and puzzles to solve – requiring a combination of brains and collaborative teamwork. As players begin to explore, their creative skills will grow and they will be ready to start creating and modifying their surroundings – the first step to sharing them with the whole community.

To be fair, here is that entire interview that brought up that point:

50 or so included LBP levels to take 12+ hours to complete and more (http://www.lbpcentral.com/50-or-so-included-lbp-levels-to-take-12-hours-to-complete-and-more/)

August 27th, 2008 Posted in LBP News (http://www.lbpcentral.com/category/littlebigplanet-news/) The LittleBigPlanet breakdown session was a little different than most. We’ve been seeing the game at every trade show since it was revealed at GDC 2007. As a result, the session took a more informal Q&A approach, rather than a showcase for the game’s features.
http://www.lbpcentral.com/images/lbphours.jpg
Those present – producer Pete Smith and interface designer Jim Unwin – did start off by volunteering some information: Firstly, the game is finished and pretty much ready to go. The European release date has been finalized as October 29th, with other regions to be confirmed later. Barring unforeseen circumstances there’s no reason at all why this game shouldn’t ship in time.

We were also told that when LittleBigPlanet was first shown at GDC, Media Molecule had only about five members. As much as the presentation at GDC was a glimpse into the PS3’s future, it was also a hiring pitch. Media Molecule was looking for new members in order to work on this incredibly ambitious project. The level shown at GDC was the entirety of LittleBigPlanet up until that point. In fact, they hadn’t even finalized the name until a few days before.
As a result of this, the game has been developed in the public eye, which is why it feels like it’s taken so long to release. Normally, you won’t see a game revealed until much later in the production process. Smith confirmed that there are plans for paid-for and free downloadable content, but bemoaned the rumors and speculation flying around about things like allowing people to charge for their levels. “We don’t know that stuff ourselves, yet. We’re going to be listening to the community once the game comes out, to see what you want.”
The game has a global server, allowing you to share your level creations with people anywhere in the world, and you’ll play co-operatively in the same way. 50 trophies are included with LittleBigPlanet and, as if to tease us further, Unwin scrolled through them, just to make sure we got the picture.
Could you clarify for us whether image importing into LittleBigPlanet is only via the PlayStation Eye? Or are there other methods?
At the moment it’s only possible with the PlayStation Eye, but other methods could be patched in later. There’s so much stuff we want to put in this game, but if we add all of it before launch, it’s never going to come out. So there’s a lot of stuff that we’ve had to delay. We say delay, and not cut, because that’s exactly what we mean. This game was made to have content patched in later.
Of course, if you take a look at the list of stickers and other content available in the Create mode — [at this point Unwin scrolls through the scarily long list] — you’ll see that there’s plenty of stuff to keep your creative side happy for now. Obviously this won’t all be available at the start of the game, that would be overwhelming. You’ll earn this stuff as you play through.
Are there limits to how much you can put in a level?
There’s a thermometer in the Create mode which shows how complex your level is. This is just a rough estimation and we’ve only ever seen it maxed out once and that was here, at Leipzig. One guy kept a level open for an entire day while groups of German press rotated in and more content was added. By the end of the day it was maxed out, but none of our levels, the ones on the game disc, even come close.
Are you going to be moderating the content of levels? This is quite likely to happen, especially when you allow use of the PlayStation Eye to take pictures.
We’ll be using a similar model to SingStar. There’ll be user moderation, so people can flag different levels if they find content abusive. The thing about the PlayStation Network, as opposed to the internet in general, is that you’re never truly anonymous. You’ve signed up to the service and have to log in to post levels, so we’ve got information on you.
We could brick someone’s PS3 [account]. I mean, that’s an extreme example, but we have the ability to do that. Mostly, though, your level will be removed and, if you repeatedly offend, you could get banned from the service.
How many levels will be on the disc?
Around 50-ish. There’ll be an interlinking story, too, so it’s not just a random selection of levels. About the first half of the game is one long tutorial, introducing you to all the gameplay mechanics in the game.
Will there be any levels that require the Create mode to get to the end?
No, not to beat the level. Though there are levels where using the create mode will allow you to access hidden areas. The Create mode will have its own set of tutorials to get you used to it.
How long does the game take to complete, if you just focus on completing the developer-made levels?
It takes me [Jim Unwin, interface designer] about 12 hours to complete all the levels, and I’ve been developing the game for the past however-many months. So expect it to take a bit longer than that.

There are certain bonuses you can get, as well, if you preorder the game from certain retailers. I know Gamestop will give you a free Kratos sackboy for your preorder, while I think another online retailer in Europe will have a similar offer, but will instead be Nariko (of Heavenly Sword). There was still another retailer that would give you some sort of special level desigining parts (but I can't remember who it was that would give you those things if you preorder from them).

So, now, let us discuss this game that is slated to be a big system seller for Sony

I don't think it will shift many systems, it's not the type of game to make people sit up and take notice that don't already have a PS3 like MGS4 did. It looks like a kids game and you know how fickle those teenagers are wanting to play exclusively M rated games are.

Having said that, I hope it actually does, because it's a quirky little game and looks interesting.

What Would Kevin Do?

Pre-ordered it. I'm going to get the Kratos DLC too.

09-08-2008, 04:35 PM
By the way, I have it reserved at Gamestop, but they didn't say anything about the Kratos thing (I figure it'll be advertised to high hell before September is up). This WAS the other game that was advertised along with MGS4 and GT5 Prologue in that one "Rise to Glory" commercial (or whatever that tag for it was) that was played constantly on WWE, so I do think some people have/will see that and think "what the hell is THAT" and "wow, looks cool".

The graphics are what attracted me to know more about this.

Oh, and there's alot of people in the gaming community that has been saying that Sackboy should (and possibly will) be Sony's official mascot.

#BROKEN Hasney
09-08-2008, 04:47 PM
Mascots are dead. Mario is only alive because Nintendo still made consoles when they were needed and MS knew that Master Chief wasn't one so they created Blinx.... Thank fuck he was killed off early.

Yes, may he never "grace" the 360

darkpower
09-08-2008, 05:02 PM
Mascots should be willingly accepted before they are made into mascots, not forced on people to accept them. That's why Mario was the icon back then. Nintendo capitalized on things.

And that's why Blinx failed to do anything for MS.

Yeah, I need a few more games like this before I put the cash down for a PS3. May end up having one within a year at this rate. Truthfully, tho God of War 3 will probably do it.

I can't wait. Definitely a buy.

Already preordered it.

Though I believe now Best Buy is giving the Nariko sackgirl bonus for a preorder, so anyone that would want THAT one, go to Best Buy (I know they will for sure, I'm just unsure if they started it already and if not then when they will).

(In fact, if the Best Buy they're in my area opens before it releases, I'm switching from Gamestop to BB to get Nariko).

Sack Boy is damn cute. Like Banjo coming to 360, this is another example of Nintendo philosophy backed by console power. Which supports my old thoughts of Nintendo upgrading the Wii to be more in line with 360/PS3. With the core consoles doing Nintendo-esque things that are actually working for them, I wonder if Wii (still mega-popular anyway), could have sustained their core fanbase rather than leave them wondering "where's our games?"

Looking forward to it, honestly. Though I'm kind of chuckling at it being a system seller, when you look at all the interest this thread has garnered.

I waffled for a while on whether or not I wanted it, but decided to pre-order it. Looks like it should be fun.

I can't wait for the full version, I've been playing around in the Beta and it's an incredible experience very powerful yet really easy to use. I do agree with KK though in that it won't be a major system seller. While the game has a massive amount of hype behind it and it's sure to garner great reviews on the surface it's going to appear to the general public as a basic platformer unless they have someone to tell them or really show them what can be done.

LBP delayed till 10/27

:
SCEE has supplied us with the official statement on the situation regarding LittleBigPlanet…

During the review process prior to the release of LittleBigPlanet, it has been brought to our attention that one of the background music tracks licensed from a record label for use in the game contains two expressions that can be found in the Qur’an. We have taken immediate action to rectify this and we sincerely apologise for any offence that this may have caused.

We will confirm the new launch date shortly.

We’ll keep you updated with further information as soon as we get it.

UPDATE

We’ve just been informed by SCEE that the delay to release is effective worldwide.

There are hardcore Arabic gaming forums? I'd think even most Nintendo games were too racy for them. Especially if mixing music and religion is too spicy.

I wonder if they object to the Wii, given that it's against their religion to touch someone else's junk.

Don't expect to play it online.

1. Their servers aren't up yet.

2. They are patching the unedited copies that managed to get out, so the only way you could play online is by downloading the patch which removes the song.

Oh, I'm not. I'm not even worried about the whole offending song being in there or not.

I really just wanted a quick crack at the story (as little as I'm sure there is) and the level editor before the new "official" release date.

I just thought it was neat that Newegg was still shipping it.

Can't pull myself away from this thing. Too busy making a level perfect. This is one of those games that won't work if you're anti-social.

Right now, only thing I'm surprised they didn't add is custom soundtracks. I know there's all that licensing shit to consider, but c'mon, you can always moderate stuff like that, too, and there's a lot of music that is in public domain that would fit for the game, too.

Heard image importing is in the works, though. Would be nice to have.
