View Full Version : Best Rap out there right NOW!
I've been out of the rap game for a long time now, mainly exploring deeply into alternative rock. I want to get back into rap music that's hot and out right now, but I have no idea where to start.
Don't come in here with Kanye West and T.I.P. and shit, I know about them, all I have to do is go on MTV.com to find those artists. I want new stuff, stuff that doesn't get main radio play, but shit that's hot.
Annnnnnd GO!

to listen to, my fav labels right now would be Def Jux and Stones Throw. NY and Cali.
But recently I've been feeling Downtempo. I'm working on my freestyles and I think Trip-Hop and downtempo beats work best. I like Mark Farina's OM label for that shit.
Freestyling to Downtemp/House/Trip-Hop beats is my thing right now

Bad ASS
I had a sweet radiohead shirt that said meeting people is easy or some such, I only had it like 3 days, and I got like these 5 buttons, I think Slint, Radiohead, Wolf Parade, Spoon, and I'm not really sure of the other one, but anyway I left it in this girl's car and after we split she never gave the shit back.
Her name wasn't Katrina but as an homage to both of our stories i will now post the entirely ambigious (it may or may not be about the hurricane) Katrina by The Black Lips:

2 people listing Mr Scruff in this thread.
Other than JusJus, with Roots Manuva, how can any of his stuff be considered rap?
Its more House than anything.
The Naitch
09-13-2008, 04:11 PM
shut the fuck up, they are Ninja Tune and they are experimental hip-hop if anything
Do you even know what house is?
Fabien Barthez
09-13-2008, 04:31 PM
THEY?
Funny, because Mr Scruff is one dude.
How do I know this? I go to his club night in Manchester pretty much every month.
experimental hip hop my nuts. how could you pigeon hole his back catalogue into such a lie?
Fabien Barthez
09-13-2008, 04:37 PM
And just because HE is on Ninja Tune, doesn't dictate the genre he produces. White Stripes brought a record out on Sub Pop, hardly makes them a fucking grunge band now does it?

yeah ok sorry I thought you listed Roots Manuva and Mr. Scruff and whatever as non hip hop but THEY are with Ninja Tune (worked with)
I am probably wrong on the fact that Scruff does house in England (from what I heard, I havent heard his "house" shit that you speak off. I know he's one dude. I just skeemed through your post too fast)

It's noteriety originated with alt rock though, and is most renound for having The Jesus and Mary chain, Afghan Whigs, Mudhoney and Nirvana on their label at the same time. Grunge era. Now is a different story, which was my point exactly.
But shockingly, it went over your head, Clox.
And to be fair, Naitch, Scruff's tunes are anything and everything. Soul, Hip Hop, Funk, Jazz, house, and even some dub and more of the niche electronica sounds. But he makes his tunes like a House Dj/Producer, and he is identical with the way he mixes live as a House Dj. Its all on the bass beat and layered in presentation.
Feel like a total pussy, castrating and rabbiting on about genres.

Oh and weezer was on there about the same time. And do you realize sub pop used to really had a bunch of nongrunge artists.
