What are some movies that will basically put you into a depression for the day?

I got a few, but one I just finished watching for first time is "God Grew Tired of Us" It is about the Lost Boys from Sudan. Basically there was a war in Sudan and all the boys aged 5-13 made a trek to find a new place to live. That alone was depressing as fuck.

Then they bring a few of them to America, to make money and try to help out their families. But I think that was even more depressing showing how shitty our lives are. Like all they did was work for the people they left behind in Africa. And they pointed out how we lack a friendly culture basically. Dunno just so sad, just want to sit in a corner and cry right now.

Chinatown and Old Boy as well
Vertigo (although it doesn't really leave me depressed, it is in essence a really depressingly disturbing story)

I'll tell you what's not depressing. Rookie of the Year. On right now. Amazing.

Requiem for a Dream - I just stared at the screen blankly for several minutes after it ended. Mainly due to the strength of Ellen Burstyn's performance. The most depressing movie that I've seen so far.

Lilja 4-ever is quite depressing, but didn't affect me as much as Requiem. Good movie, though.

Grave of the Fireflies is definitely the saddest movie I've seen.

Requim for a Dream, Leaving Las Vegas and Eternal Sunshine are all obvious choices but great ones.

I'd like to add Sympathy for Mr Vengeance

Its the first in the Korean vengeance trilogy with Oldboy and Lady Vengeance. Its about a deaf mute guy trying to raise the money for his sisters kidney transplant...It leads to the world pf black market organ trading, kidnap, torture and swathes of extreme violence. Its absolutely beautifully shot (possibly my favourite like 'shot' from any film ever occurs towards the end, its just...wow, but I wont give anything away). Essentially it will completely rip your soul to shreds, seriously watch it.

4 Months, 3 Weeks, 2 Days - a Romanian film about illegal abortion. Says it all.

I recently watched an Irish film called Garage too which was extremely depressing. It was all about the loneliness of a misfit, who is a nice guy but will never fit in in life. It also highlights the cruelty of some people's attitudes in small town Ireland (or small town anywhere, probably). The main guy is played by Pat Shortt who is a brilliant comedian and comedic actor, but he's superb in a straight role in this.

Yes, also have had 4 Months... on DVD for like a year but haven't watched it yet. Gotta see that one. Garage also sounds good the way you describe it... downloading that now.

It has pretty broad Irish accents in it, you might need to subtitle.

Requiem for a Dream is probably the most depressing thing ever made. I believe in trying something once, but why people would watch it more than once let alone buy it blows my mind.

The statute of limitations of Scarface spoilers has ended, sir.

When the show the ending to the movie on VH1's I Love the 70s, you know you're safe.

Anybody who has ever lost a father(myself) or had a bad relationship with their father can not help but be depressed or cry during Field of Dreams.

Donnie Darko.

When 'Mad World' kicked in at the end, I felt like jumping off a bridge.

Oh, and ffs I haven't seen the end of Scarface yet.

Absolutely true story. I watched about half of it for the first time a few weeks back and have been waiting for a chance to watch the end.

So fuck you and your statute of limitations. You ruined the movie.

I've already used the obligatory WHAT THE FUCK spazz out post within the last few weeks so I'll steer clear of that one.

Flipping out about spoiling a movie from 1983 that everyone has seen should require you to be punched in the face.

Yeah, Triple A summed it up pretty well. A movie over 25 years old can be spoiled with no problems. It's an unspoken rule.

NeanderCarl

Didn't flip out. Simply pointed out the strange coincidence that, as it was mentioned there is no need to alert spoilers for a 25 yr old film, that somebody on the thread was in the current process of watching it for the first time.

Bad timing for me.

"Breathless" is pretty strange and depressing. "Last House on the Left" is mad depressing too.

I love Buffalo '66. :$

but yeah.. there are a bunch of movies that make me cry like a little girl

- Breakfast on Pluto
- London
- Control
- Factory Girl
- Sylvia
- Karla
- Requiem for a Dream
- Boys Don't Cry
- Saint Jude
- Million Dollar Baby
- House of Sand and Fog
- The Limb Salesman (I actually found out I know the girl that wrote and directed it, she was on Degrassi. crazy.)
- The Lives of Others (pretty depressing but has an uplifting end)
- Children of Men

they are always hard to watch when they are true stories.

Probably the most depressing movie I've ever seen would be Mary Shelly's Frankenstien. I mean, in the original story, Frankenstein just walks in & finds his fiancee strangled, but in that movie, DeNiroStein beats the crap out of her, rapes her, & then pulls out her heart & hands it to him. Artistic Licence = "Hey, we gotta earn this R-Rating somehow!" I also got sick of having Kenneth Branagh's hairy chest stuck in my face for 2 hours.

As for GOOD depressing movies, Lady Snowblood 1 & 2. 2 of the best "Revenge" movies ever made.
