Both teams are pretty bad. I picked headbangers.

I really wanted to explore the WWF tag era in 1996, specifically gimmicks in an era when gimmicks were dying. Did tag teams get the short end of the stick on gimmicks? What I mean is, were tag teams given "gimmicks" more frequently than singles guys in the late '90s? Did this affect whether or not the team got over, or was it excuseable to some extent? Over the next few days we will find out!

Also, I really hope the Headbangers win with one vote.

Oh, yeah. The 1996 tag teams I remeber well. This is about the time I started watching wrestling. Headbangers, LoD, Godwins, Truth Commision, and I can't remember any of the others. But they were pretty bad.

The best team of 96? And probably the best since the early 90's? Owen and The Bulldog. They carried that division. I'd have put them in instead.

I don't remember ever seeing a Headbangers match. I know I probably saw a couple, but I don't remember either before Beaver Cleavage. The Godwins remind me of many people I know so they get my vote. Plus the slopings always gave me a laugh.

Both teams worked better as heels. I liked Southern Justice a hell of a lot better then The Godwins.

Headbangers were cool though and a very stand out team. they faired well for themselves.

but yea, 96 wasn't a great time period in WWF until late in the year

Headbangers do have the advantage of being in WWF Attitude. Probably about the only thing I can say for them.

I don't know either team. Therefor, I abstain from voting.

I was going to bring up a point about the Godwinns transformation to Southern Justice being awesome, but I don't think the team was actually around that long after Henry Godwinn got injured, was it?

Southern Justice last for all of a week, I think.

well, when I say Southern Justice, I mean thier heel run. Which was from around late 97 and then picked up again in summer 98. In the latter part of thier run, They teamed with Jarrett and had a decent feud with DX. Remember, X-pac got blasted witht he guitar and it like shattered his eye.

Then yea, Mark got injured again and it ended

i enjoyed using the headbangers in wrestlemania 2000 on the n64. of course you had to edit Chaz back into Mosh.

Now I remember why I liked them, it was their finisher.

Wow, this poll made me feel exactly like this years presidential election. First I thought... who do I want to win? But I couldn't come up with an answer. Then I thought... who is better? I still couldn't come up with an answer. Then I finally thought... which one sucks the most? I had to go with the Godwins.

Although if you consider their "Southern Justice" gimmick, I may rethink my decision.

Hmmmmmm

I only really know The Godwins as Southern Justice as I started watching wrestling again around SummerSlam 98. This means my only experience of The Headbangers was seeing them as the tag team division's jobbers.

Apparently the Godwinns defeated the Headbangers at Badd Blood 1997 for their second Tag Team Championship, though I think this match was a bit overshadowed by Taker/HBK in the HiaC.

It bothers me that both of these teams were champions.

However, hillbilly gimmick > stupid counterculture gimmick.

I've watched a couple of both teams' matches online today. Both gimmicks sucked. What really killed the Headbangers though, was Vince on commentary, having a fucking stick up his ass, "I don't get it, BUT OUR FANS LOOOOVVE THEM!!!" (luke warm reaction). In-ring the Headbangers were pretty good, nothing too innovative, but nothing too terrible stuck out. The Godwinns were alright for a couple of hosses they stuck together. All power, no real explosion, but there was a slop bucket as an X-Factor. I voted for the Godwinns for Southern Justice (Tennessee Lee!), because I didn't like the Headbangers, and pity.

I'm voting for the Godwinns. I did enjoy watching the Headbangers at very few times, but the Godwinns always seemed to give me more. I loved to see them, so much I force myself to stay up and watch Shotgun, though Shotgun was the place to watch tag wrestling. Anyway, I always looked forward to someone getting slopped (Mostly Sunny), and the random pig was a nice touch too. As for their in ring work, for men of there size the moved well and managed to fly through the air nicely, when ever they left their feet. They were like the backbone of the tag devsion at the time. If they weren't holding the titles, you had to win agenst them to get a shot. Since it's on my mind I do believe the Sunny storyline was a major step in WWF. Even though they never really did anything to her, just by dragging her in the ring a couple times, slopping her, and kissing her they really were "pushing it" with male/female inring action. (oh how times have changed) As for the Southern Justice gimmic. It was ok, but to me it was the fat lady singing on the team. I bearly even watched them after that.

I'm not gonna take anything (if that's possable) from the headbangers, but I never looked at them as a serious team. Hell I' chose D'Lo and Mark Henry over them. They were good for laughs, and that's about it. They always blotched, their mic skills sucked, and all around they grew stale.

I would agree that Sunny is one of the best things the tag scene had going for it back in '96. How many teams did she go through with the titles? Bodydonnas, Smokin' Gunns, Godwinns, more?

How could you forget to say LOD 2000. That's like a sin. But that's about it.

thedamndest
10-29-2008, 12:13 PM
Yeah, there was LOD 2000. But that was sort of separate from the story where she bounced around from whomever had the championship and came back as "The Manager of Champions."
