View Full Version : Little things that annoy you in games.

I downloaded Sonic 1 on my 360 and I've been playing it between sessions of Fable II. The games great and has always been one of my favourites but there is one thing that has always, always annoyed me.
Namely, the speed shoe. Maybe it's just me but I hate it that SEGA put that power up in areas full of enemies and obstacles. I fail to see where you gain the advantage in those areas.
I get higher speed so I'm faster and have less time to react yet they decide to put more enemies and obstacles in my way so I have more to avoid at a faster pace.
Yeah its awesome when you are going fast and managing to avoid everything but still, it sort of takes away from the power up. Shouldn't areas with the speed shoe be full of loops and hills and stuff so we can actually enjoy the maximum speed of Sonic?
Does anyone have their own gripe? Big or small.

Allied AI. I've been playing a lot of Saints Row 2: Fight For Stilwater, and I'm thinking it's been years since we've had AI teammates, and we still can't make one that's smart enough to not light me on fire, run between me and the guy I'm shooting, or manage to not pin me in a corner?

I could probably list a lifetime worth of these if I wanted to.
My first would be online glitchers. I understand that some people might find it fun, but I am frequently amazed by how many people use glitches to their advantage to ruin the game for everyone who doesn't use the same glitch.

Just reminded me.
Last night I was playing WoW and you go an escort quest where you make sure someone doesnt die along the way.
You have to take them to Point Z from Point A
However if you are walking along and the person is at Point F and your at Point J clearing the way, they will run to point J to help and after the monster is dead will run back to Point F to continue walking.
So fucking annoying.

Empty barrels or crates everywhere
Escort missions
Bad cel shading
In-game phone calls
XBox 360 text being too small on a standard def TV
Features or powers that don't actually do anything outside of one fight or one level
Fighting games that don't have enough unlockables
Not being able to hop a knee-high pile of debris
Not being able to enter a door because "the lock's broken" or it's "stuck fast"
Invincible enemies in a game that normally lets you kill the enemies
Invincible enemies that you're obligated to fight for some reason
First person shooters where I'm a floating, disembodied head with a telekinetically hovering gun right under my chin

Online modes with no Guest functionality.
Online modes with no Party System (yes Halo 2 innovated it, yes is standard, get over it and implement it arrogant fucks).
Pfft, online modes with no lobby (c'mon now).
Bad controls, I have no sympathy for this.
Licensed games based on properties that practically write themselves gameplay wise, but a developer still fucks it up.
Obnoxious post boot-up company logos (a 7 second vid just telling me Neversoft had something to do with the game? Seriously?).

Oh yeah, that's fucking annoying. Especially when there is an unsealable gate between point a and point B. There were three or four of these in SW and again in SW2.
Not being able to skip cut scenes. Particularly if you have to watch it again, after you die.
Yeah, unskippable cut scenes should be a war crime.
Escort missions
They wouldn't be so bad if the AI wasn't always so motherfucking painful.
XBox 360 text being too small on a standard def TV
There's NO excuse for this.
Not being able to hop a knee-high pile of debris
Not being able to enter a door because "the lock's broken" or it's "stuck fast"
Especially in destructable environments. You mean I can blow up skyscrapers but a locked door is too much for me? Six inches of debris can't be bested?
On a side note, keys/fetch quests in a game where there's no reason you can't simply breach the door with a shotgun or similar. I can blow up cars, but I need to find a key to unlock a door?
Invincible enemies in a game that normally lets you kill the enemies
Enemies that can only be killed by one counterintuitive fashion, by metagaming, or in a way that will only ever be usable just this once for some reason.
Considering I really only play Halo 3, I'll say little kids screaming "VETO!" at the top of their lungs, even after the map has been vetoed.
Also, in the old 2d side scroller beat 'em ups, I hated it when you were in the middle of a combo on one guy, and another enemy just walks up behind you and starts punching you in the back. Cheap bullshit. Some of the games fixed this problem, but it occurs frequently in others.

Anyone ever play the original Hunter: The Reckoning game? The escort AI for this little girl in a cemetary was terrible. She was terrified of the evil undead thingies, but she'd run right at them. Usually while you were being clusterfucked on the other side of the screen.
"To be continued" endings. It's not an ending if it doesn't actually end. I'm fine with games which leave a sequel open, but games which have limited or no resolution piss me off.

Videogame sites that preview games and make them sound like the second coming, and when review time comes; they pan the very features they were so excited about months prior. I understand an unfinished game can have a positive outlook because it may improve, but I have safely guessed how games will play based on cross studied previews and I'm thinking these journalist should be that much more skilled than me at spotting a dead duck.

I hate "X Killer," especially when it's a shitty knockoff on the "rival" platform (Halo killers on the PS3, Metal Gear killer...Kojima should be called that)
I'm going to toss in: Removing features. The three factions thing reminded me. In the first Samurai Warriors, you have a lot of maps where you have three factions that are actually at odds with one another. In SW2, you may have a couple, but mostly three way battles are more of a 1 on 2 or 2 on 1. I like three way battles. That's a minor deal.
But then, like Smackdown games removing CAW options or GM mode. Those are bigger deals.
Point less running about missions with no enemies really blocking the way.
Wow, I just spent 10 minutes running around the map, didn't fight anyone, barely progressed the story, and didn't get any points or money.
Howabout tutorial missions which stretch shit out?
Also, I hate the game industry spending so much money combating the used market and piracy. You hear the new one where one of the guys from Epic wants to charge us for the ending of a game unless we purchased it new? That's especially good for those people who still don't have broadband to get on Live or PSN, since the ending would be DLC even new.
I doubt anything will come of it, but it irks me that combatting piracy eats millions of dollars a year that could go to making games better. Or even--this one will stun you--profit! Piracy isn't going down, the used market isn't going away, and spending money on it means you have less money to spend on the games or horde. Motherfuckers.

Another thing I don't like is water levels or any level that hinders my movements. Again, Sonic 1, it's annoying how slowly he drags himself through the water. Espeacially when I'm trying to avoid those spears that pop in and out the floor and ceiling. Mario isn't as bad because he can swim quite fast but as a child playing Mario64, I despised the water levels. With it being my first proper 3D game and only being 8 or so it was a real chore.
Another thing is pop up in racing games (Or racing in GTA 4 to be exact). Nothing worse the ripping down a highway only for a bus or a whole grid of traffic to pop up, seriously, just a second before you make contact and at one point after I made contact. Lost an online race that way a few times.

17 Musou modes, and only a handful of unique movesets. I could get into the skill trees and renbu, but instead, I'll go into another pet peeve, the reasoning behind this glaring problem:
We're building a new engine from the ground up.
I don't give a shit. If you must build a new engine, put out a complete game along with it. I hate being hit with this whole "But the next GTA game will be good," or "We'll add back characters in DW7/6XL."
One of the greatest things about WO is that you get all the characters from both games, plus new ones. I don't care that it's not optimised for the 360/PS3, I don't have to worry about Renbu, I can play anyone in story mode (Even if there are only 5 unique storylines), and I get more than ten different movesets.
By the way, they're releasing a 2 Disc version of DW6 for the PS2, with added Musou modes and features. How's that for a big fuck you to the PS3 and 360 owners who bought the game for the revolutionary next gen BME?

Also, another bit in Saints Row that's pissing me off:
It's not a SR only thing, but I hate the way you can get punked no matter what vehicle you're driving. Like, I've been driven off the road in the Compensator and Bear by a run of the mill motorcycle. This only works one way, too. Like vehicles are badass until you get into them. Then you can spin out with the slightest provocation, and no amount of speed lets you outrun the cops.
Also, I hate omniscient guards/cops/whatever.

Online games that don't have an intuitive way of telling me if I'm lagging or not. Sure the gameplay will be an obvious tell, but a fucking colored bar takes like an hour to render. I'd appreciate it.

Insanely hard optional bosses that take alot of skill and time, however give nothing much in the way of making the game easier (I.E Items/Weapons) afetr you beat them

I know for me it was having to fight Akuma at the end of the new Street Fighter that came out on XBL.
It's like I breezed through every single fighter with ease. The first time I lost a fight so I had to fight Bison and after a few tries I beat him. But I fight through everyone and only lose one round. And so I get to fight Akuma and it's like they put him on a totally different level than anybody. I'm fighting him as Akuma and he's stronger, quicker, everything.
So much so that no matter who I used I couldn't even win a single round against him after about 20 fights so I quit.

I don't mind super hard secret bosses, but I hate it when a final boss is a huge fucking pussy. I don't give a shit if there's crazy hard side bosses or not, the final boss should be the hardest damn thing in the game, unless there's an alternate ending in for it, or I can't actually access said side boss until after the final boss is done with. Last thing I do in the game should be the ultimate challenge; having a harder boss prior to the actual last boss in the game just makes the ending seem weak.

I hate that in force unleashed they have all these awesome character skins, but they all look dumb cause he still holds the lightsaber behind him.
I also hate thet you have to restart from the last checkpoint afer each costume change. Unskippable cutscene and all.

Nah, I don't totally agree with that. I love it when end bosses are forty foot tarot angel tentacle castles with tits and statues and ramble on about time, love, futility, humanity, and ambiguous religious references, all while having at least one attack with the word Judgement in it.
Especially if said boss has abso-fucking-nothing to do with the rest of the game, and literally showed up for no particular reason at the last possible second.

This isn't about playing the game, but I've always hated black and white instructions. I'm not too bothered by it when the game is made by a small team with little a small budget.
I also hate all these warning labels and screens in games and packaging. I know why they're there. I still find them annoying.

I have played GTA: SA, completed it with 100% in absolutely everything, yet still had fun just fucking around.
I finished MGS3 and was deeply saddened after I became an incredible badass with everything that I couldnt go any farther.

I always hated the 2-second cutscene ending. After all the work that goes into working my way through the levels, going through whatever fetch-quests or dungeon-crawls I have to do, hacking through countless bad guys, taking out the insanely hard bosses, exploring every nook and cranny of the game world, and then all I get for it is a cutscene of my character striking a pose (or better yet, my character's ship flying away from an explosion)? Fuck you.
And speaking of stupid endings, why is it that they're incapable of putting out a Star Wars game with a Dark Side ending that doesn't completely screw up the canon? I mean, I expected that from the Force Unleashed, since it was mind-bogglingly retarded, but et tu Jedi Academy and Knights of the Old Republic? If you go by all the Dark Side endings, they've gone through a good half dozen Emperors by now.

The demon doors in Fable two piss me off, they could have put something half decent behind them...a cool outfit or a kick ass weapon. As it stands they are utterly pointless.
