Not sure if there has been a thread on this yet. The new Star Trek trailer's attached with Quantum of Solace. Has anyone gotten a look at it yet? I'm dying to see it but I'm really not pumped for the new bond and don't feel like spending $10 to see it.

Also, as a fan of all things Trek, I am really psyched about this. I am looking forward to seeing how classic Trek scrubs up with modern CGI and sets and story-telling and all that craziness. Got big hopes for it.

Probably gonna be hugely disappointed though.

Just looks like normal black clothing to me.

I saw the trailer.

I've never been big on Trek, but this looks really interesting. The approach to the story seems really interesting, and fresh.
The style, which I hear will be more modern and adventurous/action packed and likely more epic in scale, is a great move.
The cast and everything looks great.

The only thing that looks lame from the trailer, and I could be wrong, but visually it seems to look too bright and crispy. Like the mix between a Michael Bay movie and a show from the sci fi channel. Like too polished and fake looking almost.
Just doesn't seem appropriate for the material and even from a short trailer looks a bit jarring.

Also, I thought John Cho or whatever his name is from Harold and Kumar was a good choice, but when I saw him in action I just couldn't take it seriously.

Seems really interesting though, and thats coming from someone who doesn't have much interest in the franchise. Def gonna see it. Has the potential to be really good.

One thing that threw me off when it first started is I was like 'what the fuck is this', it looked like a new fast and the furious movie until he said "James T Kirk"
Probably why it seemed a bit off to me the first time.

It def looks good. Star Trek, to me, always had a good premise but I just couldn't get into it as a youth due to the lack of excitement and action, and the lack of operatic storytelling. I was a Star Wars lad.
Fortunately, JJ Abrams was too and said he has aimed to take Star Trek as a premise and make the new films like Star Wars films.
I think that's great and it looks to be the right move.

Tb1

I think it looks great. I've been a Trek fan my entire life. However, there is one thing that scares me. It has to have an underlying moral issue, a good Right vs. Wrong plot or it's just sci-fi. Trek ALWAYS has to have that. It's what makes it different.

I'm really more excited about this than any of the major releases next summer.
Even as a non-fan.

Transformers 2 will hopefully be fun, but lightning probably won't strike twice.
Wolverine looks like shit
Another Terminator movie, without Arnold, directed by McG? Not really pumped for that.

This is probably the most interesting looking, and competently helmed adventure of the season.
I'm really looking forward to Apatow's next movie Funny People and Tarantino's Inglorious Basterds, which come out next summer, but those are hardly action-adventure blockbusters. So by default this takes the cake.

I'm sure they'll make plenty of changes. I don't know. Most of what I know about Trek comes from my parents anyway. It's not that I don't like Sci Fi, but I've been more of the B5/Farscape/Stargate Type. The movie looks like it could be cool, though. I've always liked mostof the Trek ship designs, too.

I liked the movies more than the original series, though. Or TNG, for that matter.

And Sarek's doing to voice over during the Spock segment. He mentions destiny when he's talking, which kind of upsets me because destiny is a human term. And Vulcan's don't believe in destiny. But whatever I don't think anyone else will notice.

I dunno, that grated me too slightly, but I think that's because I'm pretty wary about the new treatment of Spock's family history. There was talk a while back that they were going to make Amanda Grayson a Vulcan, too.

As far as I'm aware they haven't followed through on it, since that would completely remove the entire tragic/character-defining duality of Spock's nature, but I'm nonetheless wary about what they're gonna do to my (and arguably, everyone's) favourite Vulcan.

(although Tuvok is a close second </>)

His Mom's still human. And judging from the trailer, they're focusing on that quite a bit. However Kirk's storyline is completely new, so that's where they've got me nervous.

mitchables
11-18-2008, 07:36 PM
Oh, thank God for that. It wouldn't make any sense for Spock to be full Vulcan; it destroys what makes him awesome.

Kirk I'm a little worried about, honestly. I hope they don't ignore the Tarsus IV massacres (even if you don't see them a reference would be nice) and the fact that he wasn't on Earth again until just before he joined Starfleet. Plus, if these are indeed the Academy days, what of people like Mallory, Finnegan, and Ben Finney and Gary Mitchell? The Kobiyashi Maru incident? Remnants of the "old" story? Or characters and events that'll make an appearance in new Kirk's time at the Academy?

I won't mind so much if they retcon it so that Pike never captained the Enterprise specifically and is just an Academy mentor or another ship's captain or what have you. That still works for me. I am just glad he is in there. But there is significant time spent in TOS discussing Kirk's Academy days, so if they do not fan service at least a couple of those events, I am gonna be a little upset.

Not "I won't ever watch this movie again" upset, but a part of me will be a little disappointed.

Tb1
11-19-2008, 07:03 PM
I'm not in on all the specifics, however I do know that they do address the Kobiyashi Maru, either talking about it or it happening in the movie. Which I would love. I also know Kirk takes over for Pike, so Pike does command the Enterprise in the movie. He's the one that yells out "Fire all weapons" in the trailer.

So, at least two good things confirmed. :y:

In the trailer it looks like Kirk takes over for Pike. he sits in the captain's chair and assumes leadership. I have never been a Star Trek fan. I always thought it was way too nerdy and the series always bored me. I did like Worf though, which won't be in this on because that's Next Generation. My friend John is really into it so I know characters from him. Zachary Quinto looks dead on as Spock though. I might check this out, though it is Star Trek so I'll see when the time comes. I am not looking forward to Terminator either. T2 is the best Terminator as well as being one of the best movies ever in my opinion. I liked T3 as well, but this one has not Arnold and I am not a huge Christian Bale fan. It just doesn't seem like Terminator without Arnold.

As for Start Trek.... I CANNOT FUCKING WAIT!

I didn't mind Enterprise once Manny Coto was one of the main men on the production staff. So hopefully, Star Trek will be back with a new series.

I'd personally love Titan to be involved with Riker and Tuvok (I know that ain't Canon, but a great starting point as we already know 2 crew members).

Or my fave idea was DS9 again, they could of kept that going on and on. It was so diff to all other ST series. With the addition of the defiant and Gamma quadrant, it was just an immense space to play with for the writing crew.

Or, another idea would be with Michael Shanks as captain. Personally, i thought it was such a good idea, he's well known and liked in SCI-FI circles to be given a chance

As much as I love DS9. It's done, there's nothing more they can do with it with the Dominion War over. And they can't really explore the Gamma Quadrant anymore, as they said numerous times in the show that the Dominion controls just about all of it.

Sure, they could always do a 2 hour TV movie about Sisko and Odo coming back, with a story about the Cardasians having problems rebuilding there government after the war. But it's been like 11 years since the show ended so doubt we'll ever see DS9 again other then being mentioned.

I agree, I was rather leaning toward they shouldn't have stopped it at the 7 seasons rule. I enjoyed just as many episodes based on DSP or when some delegates were coming from Romulus, Ferenginar, Kronos or Earth. Couple that with Section 31, Vic Fontaine and Odo and Quark being an entire story in themselves, being a devious little shit hiding from the cop etc. Awesome stuff.

You know, when Manny Coto started writing for Enterprise, that show really picked up. I enjoy it now it's gone off more than when it was on. I'd personally like to see the next one based around Riker on the Titan, as it's what we know and back up to speed with where we are now.

It'd be fucking irritating if they did stuff with Kirk and stuff with different guys, not only to he original (obv) but to the film as well as I don't see those guys doing 5-7 series and on top of that, scrapping Enterprise then doing this shit again would be a kick in the teeth.

I definitly think a new series, if it ever happened, should be based around the aftermatch of the Dominion war, and totally get rid of the whole Roddenberry Utopian nonsense. Make it quite dark. But over than that, i don't know where I would take it.

Enterprise seasons 3 and 4 kicked ass. It was just the first two seasons that blew.

As much as I'd like it, I don't see a new series coming from this movie: 1)Zach Quinto already has a gig with Heroes,2) to keep these "movie stars" all around for the show would probably be cost-prohibitive, and 3) if you recast the roles yet again for the tv, would anyone really care enough to watch?

I fucking hate Star Trek, utterly despise it.

Until this afternoon. My boss is a major Trekkie and let us out early if we went to Star Trek with him and he'd pay so I thought AT WORST I could piss about with my phone.

Loved pretty much every second. Casting and pacing were perfect. Defo gonna get it on Blu-Ray when it's out.

Jeritron
05-08-2009, 03:53 PM
Which were?

1. the use of Beastie Boys. I love the Beastie Boys, but it just kinda seemed hokey to use modern music in a space epic. I'm glad it was the only instance.
2. The puffy hands. I enjoyed that whole sequence, and thought it was fun. I liked the idea of him being snuck aboard with a sickness. I just thought they looked/seemed like something from a kid's comedy or Will Smith in Hitch.

But those were literally a matter of seconds. They really aren't complaints, rather than things I rolled my eyes at.
Other than that it was an incredibly good movie.

Jeritron

Mooияakeя™

I agree with TB1. I think due to the 'failure' of Enterprise, the studio are completely starting again. They know they have a damn powerful franchise, but needed it to reach more mainstream audience. This new film by far has done it.

If people gave up the stereotype "geek" thing with Star Trek and just watch it. They will find it's humorous, intelligent, developed, interesting and above all entertaining. It's not at all difficult to follow. it's a well known fact that treknobabble is just made up anyway to make it sound advanced. ( http://hyotynen.kapsi.fi/trekfailure )

I know I'm not going to fly across galaxies, so this is my way of living it out and I think Star Trek is an awesome outlet for the minds more adventurous side, in a TV sense anyway (compared to Sunset Beach et al).

Just got back from the movie, and enjoyed the hell out of it. Though I couldn't help but notice something eerily familiar about the plot structure...

A ruthless villain with an unstoppable planet-destroying superweapon? A troubled farm-boy who never knew his heroic father? A mysterious old hermit letting said farm-boy in on a secret that will be his call to greatness?

So that's how they made Star Trek a blockbuster again--they pulled the plot from the first Star Wars! :p

Seriously, though, it's a damn fun movie. Great cast, phenomenal effects, and writing that doesn't suck, so thumbs up.

These are just the plot points of "The Hero's Journey." You also forgot the "Belly of the Beast" moment, which was his adventure with Chickenasaurus Rex on that ice planet.

You can find the same plot points in many, many movies, including Lord of the Rings and Batman.

As am amateur filmmaker myself, I wanted to see if anyone else noticed JJ Abrams' use of lens flares throughout the film (when the camera turns and you can see the light spectral circles of the lenses). There were more lens flares in this film than perhaps I have ever seen in a 2 hour film, and they almost became a part of the storytelling in the way they were used.

Amazing movie. Gearing up to go see it again here in a few minutes.

There is a quip amongst trekkies that the even ones are the good ones and the odd ones are the shit ones. I think that's the right way around anyway. Of course it's not extended to all films, but just a general joke.

I thought the Bridge 'looked' too Hi-Tech and too 'Sterile-White' when taken into context with the Original Series.

I think they could possible base a new series on the events that happen to Romulus, in the movie, and its effects on the alpha quadrant. [/geek]

Fantastic movie. Great casting and beautiful visually - nicely done reboot to basically allow them to do whatever they like in future films.

I marked out so many times just tonight watching it. Like when Sulu mentioned he'd done fencing I immediately remembered the Naked Time episode where he was galavanting around the ship and pricked his finger on the sword:'(

I know nothing about Star Trek other than it's reference in pop culture, but I went to see this anyway because the trailers all look great. I thought the movie was excellent. Great writing and great casting. I thought Chris Pine was your typical meat head pretty boy actor but I was pleasantly surprised to be proven wrong.

Did anyone else find the added light glare to be a bit over the top? It was a neat effect and made the film seem less green screeny but I think they went too far with it.

I just saw it - bloody loved it

I don't know who most of the actors were but I thought the casting was spot on. The bloke who played Dr McCoy nailed it - although I thought Checkov was a bit over the top.

Still a great bloody movie.

It's so refreshing to have a group of people that actually know what goes into making a good action movie and not just blowing stuff up Michael Bay style. There actually has to be good writing.

"You know, traveling through time, changing history... that's cheating." That's brilliant.

I don't know of the McCoy from the other films or series, but I would have to say I enjoyed his scenes the most, apart from the big action scenes.

He's Karl Urban aka Eomer in LOTR, the horseman who is banished from Rohan.

Yeah I just noticed the other day that he was in LOTR, knew I'd recognised him from somewhere.

Also if you watch the original Trek series and the 4th movie in particular you'll realise Chekhov actually really wasn't overdone

I also loved the 'test' scene, where Kirk was just eating the apple and not giving a shit.

ct2k
05-18-2009, 08:21 AM
Yeah that was one of the biggest nods to the original film series for sure, I think they way they've done the reboot whilst preserving what went before was really well done. Woulda been very easy for Abrams to simply say 'fuck it' and just start from scratch with no attempt at making the new film compatible with what went before.

So was it 26 Klingon vessels that were destroyed? And why? Perhaps that would be discussed in the 2nd film. It just seems like a random point at this stage.

It related to a deleted scene (or scenes) involving Nero escaping from a Klingon prison planet (where he seemingly ended up after destroying the USS Kelvin) - bit confusing that it was left in really.

Yeah, after the battle with the Kelvin some Klingons apparently captured the Narada and sent Nero to Rura Penthe. And eventually Nero's crew regained control of the Narada, got Nero back, and fucked up the Klingons in the process. That was apparently the reason for their hiatus for like 25 years.

The Destroyer

Fairly sure it was filmed, so it'll probably turn up on the DVD.

Jeritron
05-18-2009, 05:45 PM
Does it show Klingons? Wouldn't be suprised if they scrapped it from the dvd as well.

I think this because it's fairly obvious they are going to use them for the second movie, and perhaps the original thinking behind scrapping it was to conserve them for a second installment draw.
Also, if that wasnt' the thinking it may now be decided. Really there's no point in putting that on the dvd if they want to save, or even improve upon, their klingon design for the second movie.

It's not like the scene won't see the light of day. There will be multiple dvd releases and they know that. Studios tend to save things like that for future special editions rather than first releases, since the sales will probably be just as high either way.

R2D2 is in Star Trek....

Apparently taken from mtv.com

There’s really not much more to tell you. The rules are pretty simple. Locate R2, write down where you saw him in an e-mail, and shoot it off to facebook@paramount.com with “STAR TREK Easter Egg Sweepstakes” in the subject line. I couldn’t care less about winning the prop, but it would warm this “Star Wars” geek’s heart to see the plucky little droid pop up in a “Star Trek” movie. Maybe J.J. will figure out a way to kill off Jar Jar for his second “Trek” go-round.

No word on the yet of any location of him yet. Im curious for this contest to be done with so I can see a photo of where he is...

If you guys are referring to the one inside the circle my guess would be that it is either a shuttlecraft of some sort or peharps an escape pod. The Defiant is the ship is in that shot on the right hand side almost right in front of it tilted on it's side.
