Go ahead. Give us one movie that you really love and you think we should check out, and tell us why. Obviously, it helps if the movie is not something like Spider-man or some shit that everyone probably has already seen.

Eraserhead

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0074486/

This is the scariest movie I have ever seen. It's David Lynch's first feature length movie and it is just the weirdest, most ****ed up shit ever.

PLOT: A guy impregnates his young girlfriend, and what is born is some sort of mutant/alien looking baby, which he must take care of until it basically drives him mad.

This is the baby:
http://www.geocities.com/~mikehartmann/baby.jpghttp://monsterhunter.coldfusionvideo.com/Eraserhead3.jpg

It's really hard to find. I had to download it from Kazaa. Download it if you have to because it is the creepiest shit ever.

Oh, by the way, this is Stanley Kubrick's favorite film of all time and he'd make his actors watch it in The Shining to "get into the mood".

Death Race 2000

http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/6305261318.01.LZZZZZZZ.gif

Just a classic cult movie, my dad told me it was really good, and he was right, its basically a comedy which kind of has a political message too it, although the message might be a little outdated, as I think its more about how society was doomed in the 70s if things didn't change.

The plot is fairly simple, it centres around the national sport, which is a trans-continental road race, where you pick up points by killing people, getting varied points for different people you kill, leading to some comic moments such as "Euthanasia" day at the hospital on the path of the racers.

Its the kind of film you really have to see to decide whether you like it or not, words don't do it justice

I love it purely because its a dark comedy which is fairly satirical at the same time, and is well worth checking out

My favorite movie that most people may not have seen is probably the Truman Show

http://images.amazon.com/images/P/6305252521.01.MZZZZZZZ.jpg

Summary from IMDB:

He's the star of the show--but he doesn't know. Jim Carrey as Truman Burbank in this movie from director Peter Weir about a man whose life is a nonstop TV show. Truman doesn't realize that his quaint hometown is a giant studio set run by a visionary producer/director/creator (Ed Harris), that folks living and working there are Hollywood actors, that even his incessantly bubbly wife is a contract player. Gradually, Truman gets wise. And what he does about his discovery will have you laughing, crying and cheering.

Once Upon a Time in America

http://imdb.com/title/tt0087843/

Its a story about these Jewish gangsters in New York who grow up together and then have this reunion later. They were doing all this shit during Prohibition but then Noodles (Bobby De Niro) goes into hiding for a bit and comes back in the 60s. James Woods is the man in this too

Its about 4 hours long but oh my God it is sweet. They tried to edit the original US release but they butchered it horribly. I saw the actual version that was released elsewhere and holy shit I had a 4 hour boner. Sergio Leone directed it btw

Once Upon A Time In China

It's about how Wong Fei Hung (Chinese Folk Hero) resisted the influence of Western Culture as China was beginning to revolutionize in the 1800s.

It's not the best as far as script (it's a dubbed over martial arts movie, really), but the action is crazy-go-nuts. See the sequels (2 and 3) if you can find them too.

If you remember that Iron Monkey movie that came out a few years back, it's like a prequel to this.

This movie is ****ing amazing. It is just like a Quentin Tarantino film and just as good, or even better in some aspects, only in Spanish. It's from the same guys that just put out 21 Grams. It's ****ing great. Every Tarantino fan needs to watch it. The opening scene is like a straight up tribute to Reservoir Dogs.

PLOT: A horrific car accident connects three stories, each involving characters dealing with loss, regret, and life's harsh realities, all in the name of love.

It's the #149 greatest film of all time on IMDB. Watch it, trust me.

A Knight's Tale

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0183790/

This is the most fun movie I've ever seen, and it doesn't get nearly the love it deserves.

PLOT: Young William Thatcher, a squire to Sir Ector, steps into his mentor's armor after his...unfortunate death. Since it was law in the medieval age that only nobles could compete, William had to hide his identity from those in power. After a victory, William decides to strike out as a knight full-time, gaining "glory and riches." Along the way, he (and his mates Wat and Roland) meets a young writer named Chaucer, who acts as his herald. After befriending a young blacksmith named Kate (Laura Fraser  ), the "team" is complete. Of course, there's the requisite love interest and the rival (both romantically and competitively).

Seriously, this movie is so much fun. People were turned off by the infusion of modern music into the soundtrack, but it really does add to the overall air of goofiness with which director/writer Brian Helgeland has painted the entire film. This is one of my favorite movies of all-time, and most people I talk to don't even know it exists.

Vincent (1982)

Plot Outline: Young Vincent Malloy dreams of being just like Vincent Price and loses himself in macabre daydreams which annoys his mother.

This is a short film by Tim Burton and it's a lot like the Nightmare before Christmas, infact you can see it on the DVD. It's a pretty cool little film.

Even if you're not a fan of Jim I urge you to see this, it's far from his usual line of work. I don't like him that much, but loved this movie.

Taken from IMDB: Joel (Jim Carrey) is stunned to discover that his girlfriend Clementine (Kate Winslet) has had her memories of their tumultuous relationship erased. Out of desperation, he contracts the inventor of the process, Dr. Howard Mierzwaik (Tom Wilkinson), to have Clementine removed from his own memory. But as Joel's memories progressively disappear, he begins to rediscover their earlier passion. From deep within the recesses of his brain, Joel attempts to escape the procedure. As Dr. Mierzwiak and his crew (Kristen Dunst, Mark Ruffalo, Elijah Wood) chase him through the maze of his memories, it's clear that Joel just can't get her out of his head.

The Believer

Starring: Ryan Gosling (lol, the little runtcock from Young Hercules and Breaker High)

It's pretty messed up, Gosling plays a Jewish Neo Nazi, and just struggles on whether he hates or loves his religeon and what it stands for. He is extreme in both ways of thought, when he shows affection for his religeon, he demands all those around respect it and he's pretty orthodox. However when he hates it...well he's a fuc</>king Jewish Neo Nazi. His character's cool, he plays an intellectual but a badass (even though as much as he tried, he just wasn't THAT convincing as a badass, considering he weights about the same as my pinky finger).

One Hour Photo (2002)

Seymour 'SY' Parrish has been doing photo development for 20 years. He has a vast knowledge of modern photography and develops photos at a local department store for a living. But SY lives a sad and lonely life and begins spying on the Yorkin family, his biggest customers who seem to have everything in the world. SY begins to feel that he wants to be in the Yorkin's life, but when he discovers that the Yorkins are not as perfect as they seem, he becomes a man on a mission to expose the imperfections of the Yorkin family that could tear them apart.

One of my all-time favorites. Robin Williams is amazing in the lead role.

Just watched Donnie Darko...Mad fu</>cked up, which I usually don't like, but this was definitely an exception because the movie was pretty damn good.

I looked on IMDB for a good review but every one made it look either really stupid or gave away too much of the movie.

It's basically about some kid in the 80's who is seeing visions which cause him to do some fu</>cked up stuff, but each thing he does turns out to have a meaning later. Overall, it's a really good movie.

Resurrection. It stars Christopher Lambert as John Prudhomme, and Leland Orser as Detective Andrew Hollingworth. Basically, it's a lot like Se7en. Here's the plot from IMDb: Detective John Prudhomme, a Cajun transplanted to Chicago, is assigned to investigate the savage murder of a man who has bled to death from a severed arm. A message, "He Is Coming", written in blood on the victim's window, is a dark, forboding clue of his task. After two more victims with missing body parts are discovered, Prudhomme realizes he is on the trail of a serial killer who is using the missing body parts to reconstruct the body of Christ...just in time for Easter. As Prudhomme struggles to catch the zealot-murderer, he is haunted by the death of his son, his continued estrangement from his wife, and his wavering faith in God.

Antonio Salieri believes that Mozart's music is divine. He wishes he was himself as good a musician as Mozart so that he can praise the Lord through composing. But he can't understand why God favored Mozart, such a vulgar creature, to be his instrument. Salieri's envy has made him an enemy of God whose greatness was evident in Mozart. Gamera III

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0184503/

It's the final film in the Gamera Trilogy, and has a much more serious tone to it than any other giant monster movie; much of it from the perspective of the people in the streets. It uses fantastic special effects (despite it's budget), but doesn't stray too far out and take away the authentic "Japanese Monster Movie" feel of the monsters (Godzilla '98), as they still primarilly use costumes. After following the genre for the majority of my life, it's great to see this movie come together as it did.

It's not like this had a great plot or anything, it's not a "great" film, but it's the greatest in it's genre IMO.

Also, I think "A Simple Plan" is underrated.

I'm not sure if this is a well known movie or not, but I personally rank it as probably my favourite, so here it goes.

Title: National Lampoon's Loaded Weapon 1
Genre: Comedy
Plot: After a police officer's (Whoopie Goldberg) alledged suicide, her longtime friend (who is a Detective, played by Samuel L. Jackson), insists otherwise, as he received a call to talk about urgent matters. He is given permission to work the case, but only if he works with a burntout cop (Emilio Estevez) who shoots (and misses) then asks (stupid) questions later, which is exactly the opposite of what Wes Luger (Samuel L. Jackson) is like. Jack Colt (Emilio Estevez) is after something, too. The return of his companion Clair.

My dad got this for his birthday a while ago, and he never even opened it. One day my friend and I were bored, so we went looking through all our videos, then we came upon it, thinking it was going to make us even more bored. This underestimating attitude made the movie even more hilarious in our minds. If you only like watching things that make perfect sense, then don't watch this. It is completely off the wall.

He meets up with Billy, a cabbie who becomes intrigued by the power and thrills of a life of crime. Together they plan a deal with the local drug boss with explosive consequences.

When he comes out of jail and does some crazy shit. He throws a night club owner out of the nightclub, through a window in the second storey, then he rapes and kills this girl. Ron Launius (Lucas), Billy Deverell (Nelson), Barbara Richardson (Wagner) and Joy Miller (Garofalo) were found brutally murdered, bludgeoned to death with a pipe, and Launius's wife, Susan (Applegate), was left in critical condition. The police investigation that followed--led by detectives Sam Nico (Levine), Louis Cruz (Frankie G. ) and Mike Peters (Gainey) --would unearth a seedy world of drugs and violence, ultimately revealing a motley crew from L. A. 's underbelly including ex-con David Lind (McDermott), nightclub impresario Eddie Nash (Bogosian), and porn legend John Holmes (Kilmer) as well as Holmes's estranged wife Sharon (Kudrow) and his teenage lover Dawn Schiller (Bosworth).

Bully (2001)

Raw, realistic, deeply disturbing and haunting film about a group of recently graduated high school kids whose lives are aimless and empty. With nothing better to do, they get together to plot the murder of their mean best friend (Nick Stahl), who was the only one bound for college and to make something of himself. With none of your usual Hollywood gloss and a well selected cast (especially Stahl in a creepy performance), this film has many powerful moments and completely draws you into it's story. Shockingly enough, based on a true story.

Unrated; Strong Sexual Content, Graphic Violence, Profanity, and Nudity.

Clyde Barrow, recently out of prison, has turned to bank robbery. He meets Bonnie Parker and together the two form the nucleus of a gang of bank robbers who terrorize the southwest in the 1920s. Based on the true story of a pair of notorious bank robbers, the film personalizes them while still showing the violence that went along with them.

Tape

It's about three highschool friends who get together in a motel. It's pretty much only has three main characters (Uman Thurman and Ethan Hawke are in it) and takes place in one room. But it's still incredibly interesting and entertaining. It's based on a play and is directed by Richard Linklater who did Dazed and Confused and Waking Life.

Ok, Triple A is right about Amores Perros, it is a great film. Dog fights and all.

I'm going to say two films, first is

LA HAINE

It's a French movie about the race riots in Marseiile. A teenager gets beaten by the police, and his three friends try and get revenge for what happened. It just follows them for the whole day and the ending is great.

The other one is

THE WARRIORS

About the gangs in New York, who all meet up for a truce, but the leader of all the gangs is killed and it's blamed on The Warriors. Then they have to survive and all the gangs are on to them, whilst they try to get back to there territory.

Oodishun/Audition.

This widowed Japenese guy is persuaded by his son to find a new wife. Working in the film industry, he decides to hold a fake audition, after discussions with his friend. The audition, which young girls think is for a new movie, is designed to find a new wife.

In the waiting room, the movie guy(dont know his name, Japanese) spots a lonely quiet girl in the corner. He is attracted to her, and sets out to get her. They go on various dates, but her history is vague, and when the man checks it out, spurred on by his suspicious friends, no-one has heard of her.

He is still attracted, but his decision to get married(I think) to her has consequences.

It's slow starting, but the end sequence is brilliant. Great directing.

Japanese, but with English subtitles.

i just want to re-iderate BLOOD, GUTS, BULLETS, AND OCTANE. its about these two guys that own a little used car dealership and its right next to the biggest used car dealership in world. their business is going under, and their 'bidder' (the guy who gets cars for them -and has been screwing them over for months) fails to get them a 'list' but offers them one car (a 1963 pontiac LeMans convertable) worth 250,000 dollars (obviously because of what is in the trunk). they tell the guy to **** off with that deal, but then they get evicted from their car lot, and decide to take the deal. and hilarity ensues as they get mixed up in a bunch of underworld shit.

i think the movie is catagorized as a black comedy. its sorta like pulp fiction because it has different 'chapters', but the movie goes in chronological order. its sort of like the usual suspects, but i think its better. and the end is great(when you find out whats in the trunk of the car).

Once Were Warriors.

Set in urban Auckland (New Zealand) this movie tells the story of the Heke family. Jake Heke is a violent man who beats his wife frequently when drunk, and yet obviously loves both her and his family. The movie follows a period of several weeks in the family's life showing Jake's frequent outburst of violence and the effect that this has on his family. The youngest son is in trouble with the police and may be put into a foster home while the elder son is about to join a street gang. Jake's daughter has her own serious problems which are a key element in the plot.

PUMPKIN

http://www.cyber-cinema.com/original/pumpkinOrg.jpg

PLOT: Perky, perfect Carolyn and her Alpha Omega Pi sisters plan to win Sorority of the Year by impressing the Greek Council with a killer charity: coaching mentally challenged athletes for the regional Challenged Games. When Carolyn's assigned to coach Pumpkin she's terrified at first, but soon sees in him something she's never seen before: a gentle humanity and honest clarity that touches her soul. To the horror of her friends and Pumpkin's overprotective mother, Carolyn falls in love, becoming an outcast in the process. As Carolyn's "perfect life" falls apart, Pumpkin teaches her that perfect isn't always perfect after all.

THOUGHTS: At first, I thought it was going to be a girl movie, something that would bore me to tear. As the movie progresses, you really get engrossed by the story and the characters. You have to love Christina Ricci in this, and the guy, Pumpkin, is so great that he makes the movie by himself. The mother of Pumpkin is so despicable that you would want to rip her head off. All the characters and their personnal evolution makes this a great movie.

First things first. Eraserhead was awesome I saw it in the theater a couple of years ago along with Dune. but my choice is: Jesus' Son

A gentle and usually mellow young man, who sometimes knows things before they happen and gets vibes of premonition, tell us his story: how he met Michelle in Iowa in 1971, how he got the name ****head, how she introduced him to heroin and their falling in love, his thieving, his hospital work and their time in Chicago when she gets pregnant, detox, going to Phoenix to live, AA meetings and a dance, working at a care center where he learns to touch the residents, and modifying his daily schedule so that he passes a neighboring Mennonite household at the right time to hear the wife sing Gospel songs in the shower. Slowly, very slowly, FH lets his gifts emerge.

Ishtar - 1987

OK, my bet is 9/10 people here will probably hate this movie. It's been called one of the biggest flops ever. But I think it's hilarious. Two crappy lounge singers (Dustin Hoffman & Warren Beatty) get a gig in Morocco and become involved in an international conflict with people trying to overthrow the Ishtar regime. It has a 3.7 rating on IMDb but I just think this movie was way befre it's time. The jokes about camels are hilarous.

I remember when that movie first debuted, part of it's downfall was it's big name actors in it failing to make the story better than it was. It didn't deliver on it's hyped promises. Sort of like Water World. When you look at it years away from it's release date and everything that went with it, good or bad, you can watch it and appreciate it better.

Post Man another Costner movie would be my pick. my selection for this thread and its purpose.

Intacto.

A great spanish movie i had the luck of picking up for a fiver at HMV.

The story works on the idea that luck is something which can be traded/betted/stolen. People who have come to realise this play high stake games risking their lives at the very least for more luck.

The story follows one such person who has managed to walk away the only survivor of a plane crash...from there we follow him until his showdown in a desert casino with Max Von Sydow who plays the luckiest man on the planet.

I'd recommend this for the scripting, the direction...the scene in the woods where they race blindfolded is fantastic, and the acting, Von Sydow's reminiscing of his childhood and time in a concentration camp in particular, are superb.

I'd say it won't be long before it gets remade so see it before we get a shite, diluted version.

It was directed by Damon Dash, the coCEO of Rocafella Records, who also directed Paper Soldiers(2003) and State Property 2(2005). He also produced all 3 of the previously mentioned as a State Propert(2001). He also directed alot of Rocafella Records music videos. Its a good movie with only one rap star in it opposed to the other films mentioned. I give it a good 7.5/10

Wilbur Wants To Kill Himself.

The good-hearted Harbour has spent his whole life trying to take care of his motherless and suicidal little brother, Wilbur. The brothers are inseparable. When in their thirties, they lose their father and inherit his second-hand bookshop. One day Alice enters the shop with her little daughter. Alice is a cleaning lady at the nearby hospital and she sells the books that the patients leave behind. The daughter Mary yearns for a home where the books don't always get sold. Harbour falls in love with Alice and soon all four of them are closely intertwined in each other's lives - and perhaps even deaths.

basically, it's a dark comedy from scotland, although it was written in scandanavia somewhere i think. The humour is really dry and dark, and it's probably the funniest film I remember seeing whilst I've been going to the cinema. IMO, the best movie done by the Christopher Guest project people (A Mighty Wind, Spinal Tap, Best In Show)

When you watch the movie, note that every time one of the actors is doing a monologue to the camera, its an improvisation. Coming from an actor's standpoint, that is some amazing working. Christopher Guest laid down the bare bones of the story, and the actors added their bits in the improvs, and the whole movie was shaped around that. It is the perfect movie of how NOT to produce a stage show.

La Mala Educacion (bad education)

It's a spanish film... i just saw it at the cinema and I'm at pains for a way to describe it without spoiling anything. It's about two men who fell in love at boarding school as children, while they were abused by the priest who ran the place. Anyway, it shows various states of their growth until they're adults in the 70s, which is when the movie is set I think.

God, it's impossible to give you a rough idea without f</>ucking up the film completely. It's not the greatest film I've ever seen, but it's good and any of you who watch a lot of films would probably enjoy it. except supreme, cause he hates me :'(

Lady Snow Blood.

This is the film that Quinton T. remade/used as his main source of material for Kill Bill. There is even a song from this move in Kill Bill (It plays when Oren is killed.) here is the plot:

It is the turn of the century. Yuki is a woman in search of revenge, in search of 4 people who killed her father and older brother before she was born. At that time, rumors circulated that men dressed in white were tax collectors - so it was awfully unfortunate for him, a school teacher on his way to his new job at a small village, to be wandering around in a brand-new white suit.

After mercilessly killing him, the miscreants beat and rape Yuki's mother, and one of them takes her to Tokyo to use as his slave. She murders him in revenge, but is imprisoned for life before she can hunt down the other three. By seducing the prison guards, she becomes pregnant, and dies soon after she gives birth to Yuki. As she lies dying, surrounded by her fellow prisoners, she prays that Yuki will complete her vengeance.
One of the other prisoners and a priest raise Yuki. The priest trains Yuki in the arts of death, so that she may be able to fulfill her mother's dying wish.

As she follows the clues that lead her to each of the remaining 3 marked for death, Yuki soon becomes known throughout Japan as Lady Snowblood!

Can't decide!
I'm stuck between my 4 favourite films:

National Lampoons Animal House
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0077975/
Absolutely fantastic college campus comedy starring the late, great John Belushi. TOGA!

Blues Brothers
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0080455/
One of the greatest comedies ever, with about 100 cameos, and the best soundtrack ever.

Happy Gilmore
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0116483/
Adam Sandler, playing a failed hockey player, playing golf. Utterly stupid, and mind-numbingly hilarious.

Joe Dirt
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0245686/
David Spade is Joe Dirt, a total loser in a bizarre search for his parents who dumped him in a trash can in the grand canyon when he was six. Features Brittany Daniels getting off a horse in denim hotpants..   . Worth watching for that clip alone!

Anyway, I can't decide between these 4 movies, and would recommend buying all of them.
If you haven't seen any of them, then do so now!
