Showtime PPV To Air Affliction II On January 24th

Submitted by KingLev (http://fightticker.com/user/14) on November 13, 2008 - 11:32am

Showtime Sports won't let a dispute with its former mixed martial arts promotional partner keep it from broadcasting the sport as soon as January, SI.com has learned.

The premium cable network, in conjunction with Golden Boy Promotions, will distribute and produce Affliction's Jan. 24 pay-per-view card topped by a five-round fight between WAMMA heavyweight champion Fedor Emelianenko and former UFC titleholder Andrei Arlovski.

In addition to Emelianenko-Arlovski -- a first meeting for Europe's best heavyweight mixed martial artists -- Matt Lindland is set to fight Renato "Babalu" Sobral, both of whom reigned victorious in the promotion's debut on July 19. Vitor Belfort, also a winner on the summer card, is expected to fight, though a rumored bout with Dream 2008 middleweight grand prix champion Gegard Mousasi appears unlikely, said Atencio.

The evening's undercard, headlined by a light heavyweight tilt between Antonio Rogerio Nogueira and Vladimir Matyushenko, will air uninterrupted on HDNet. Kiril Sidelnikov -- whom Atencio referred to as "Baby Fedor" despite the fact the Russian has two losses in six fights compared to his fellow countryman's one defeat in 30 -- meets slugger Paul Buentello as well.

Great news for Affliction because the production for this show should be much better than the initial show. I wonder if Showtime will look to use their own announce team. While I wouldn't mind Gus Johnson, Stephen Quadros or even Frank Shamrock please do not subject us to any more of Mauro Renallo -- he was the worst.

WAR Lil Nog!!

Nice, I can't wait to see Emelianenko fight again.

Should be interesting to see if Arlovski can take it to the 'best pound for pound' fighter in the world today.

Anderson Silva is the best "pound for pound"..

Fedor is the best heavyweight..

I agree, but were they not billing Fedor as the best "pound for pound" as well?

You always hear that term when it comes to smaller guys like Silva, BJ Penn, Faber, etc..

I don't care what anyone says, Lyoto Machida is P4P champion in my eyes. Regardless of whether you enjoy watching him, he has beaten Stephan Bonnar, Rich Franklin, BJ Penn, Nakamura, Sokodjou and Tito Ortiz and is undefeated.

Then Fedor, Then Silva.

Who do people want to win this? I personally am backing Arlovski.

I  Arlovski but I want Fedor to win.. Specially after he lost that last national Sambo match.. I want him to win to remain dominant so he draws when UFC finally signs him..

Then I'm backing Babalu and Lil Nog..
