One of the most newsworthy events that transpired on World Wrestling Entertainment's tour of Iraq last week took place nowhere near any of the cameras that were filming the tour. I was stunned at hearing the following story over the weekend and initially chalked it up to being just an urban legend, but as it turns out, it was completely accurate.

Retired WWE announcer (and current WWE.com personality) Joey Styles punched out former WWE champion JBL in Iraq during an altercation between the two, busting JBL open under the eye.

No, that is not a typo.

As the story was initially explained to me (and all versions I've heard since have matched the original report I was conveyed), JBL made Styles something of a target because it was Styles' first tour of Iraq for the company and was hazing the former ECW announcer.

I was told JBL was trying to bully Styles with a lot of condescending comments and actions, including allegedly spilling a drink on Styles on purpose. JBL was more or less pulling a lot of the shenanigans that a lot of of the performers in the company can't stand but deal with since he has the political stroke of being a tenured veteran.

Several days into the tour, JBL (who by all accounts had been drinking) did something that caused Styles to physically retaliate in defense. A number of wrestlers stepped in between them and held the two apart. When JBL broke free, he went towards Styles, who "nailed him perfectly with a pretty good shot" according to one witness, laying JBL out and blackening his eye. There were no further incidents between the two on the tour after that.

There were a number of performers who pointed out to me that the story was something of karma coming back to bite JBL in the rear because his antics had caused Smackdown talent Palmer Cannon to quit the company during a European tour (and Cannon wasn't the only victim of JBL's hazing over the years) as well as the famous ECW One Night Stand beating of the Blue Meanie during the PPV closing brawl inside the ring.

At last night's Raw in Philadelphia, the story was the talk of the day among wrestlers, who were amazed by the incident. I was also told JBL was acting completely subdued at the taping, something absolutely out of character for him, as he knew the story was making the rounds. Styles, meanwhile, was trying to downplay the incident to those who brought it up to him at Raw.

It was considered doubly embarrassing for JBL among the wrestlers since he was so involved with setting up the Iraq tours.

In a strange way, some theorized the incident would get Styles over with Vince McMahon because it showed his "toughness" and could pave the way for his return to TV. I have no idea whether Styles' cameo last night was part of any direct result of the "Iraq Punchout", as it was termed to me.

Good for fucking Styles. It seems like perfect karma, and JBL has seemingly learned something from it. Styles is also handling the situation like a champ by downplaying it and not keeping his issues with JBL going.

I miss Styles as an on-screen character. I'm not entirely sure that his appearance at the Slammys was because of this, as when I saw "OMG" and "Extreme" moments being announced as categories, I immediately thought of Styles as a presenter, but maybe we might get a few Styles appearances over the next few months.

Stemming from reports of the Joey Styles and JBL incident over the WWE's tour of Iraq, another wrestler has spoken up about the supposed toughness of the two men. TNA's Kurt Angle, who plans to do an MMA fight within the next year or four, has placed a blatant challenge against Joey Styles.

"Just cause he knocked out Bradshaw doesn't mean a thing," Angle told us this morning over the phone. "Styles needs to step into the Octagon with me. I'll beat the shit out of the little guy. It's DAMN true."

As we reported yesterday, there was a major backstage altercation that took place between former ECW announcer Joey Styles and former WWE Champion John Bradshaw Layfield while WWE was overseas in Iraq over the weekend. There are new details on the actual scuffle that took place between the two.

JBL is known for being a lockerroom bully and he was giving it to Joey Styles all week. Over the weekend, Styles had enough and got in JBL's face. Several WWE employees jumped in to break it up and JBL, who had been drinking, broke free. He then charged at Styles, who punched him right in the face and knocked him down. JBL ended up with a black eye and a cut under his eye, which were somewhat visible on Monday's RAW. JBL wore heavy make-up during the broadcast and tilted his cowboy hat down a bit to conceal his face. JBL spent most of Monday night by himself in the locker room, being very quiet and spending most of his time on his Blackberry phone.

Apparently there were a number of different things that JBL did to Styles during the course of the Iraq tour, all of which would have set a normal person off. Some of JBL's hazing was verbal and some was physical.

In a related note, there is an unwritten rule among WWE superstars that anybody who falls alseep on the airplane en route to an overseas tour is subject to pranks. It was reported last week that WWE ring announcer Lillian Garcia fell asleep on the way to Iraq and JBL dumped a bucket of ice on her.

Here is a different story from the Observer where it claims Joey jumped JBL.

New details are coming in from the altercation between Joey Styles and JBL in Iraq from a few different sources. Apparently the incident wasn’t as big as it was first made out to be. One eye witness reports that after JBL was bullying Styles all night and was being taken away by other wrestlers for basically being an *****, “When he turned his back, Joey jumped on him and caught JBL with a punch that gave him a small cut under the eye that was bleeding like crazy. JBL was furious.” It wasn’t a showdown situation where they were face to face and Joey just clocked him.

One source also reports that JBL was talking trash about Styles and his family until Styles just blew up on him. The whole incident was described as a slow build over several days with lots of verbal taunting. At RAW this week, Styles was something of a hero to some. While Joey isn’t popular in some circles within WWE, there were a lot of people who got a big kick out of the idea that JBL was humiliated by the old ECW TV announcer. JBL was very quiet at RAW, working on his Blackberry before the show and being more subdued and quiet than usual, since he just knew people were talking behind his back and he was the center of a story that will probably be repeated forever. One friend of JBL’s noted, “I always shake my head when he lowers himself to these high school spectacles. He’s such a smart, funny, engaging person and a good guy at his core but he is compelled to act in a deplorable manner and it has come back to bite him in the ass.”

It’ll be interesting to see any repercussions come out of this. The incident in Iraq, when it happened, was a huge embarrassment to the company. Vince told everyone who witnessed it that nobody was to breathe a word about it to anyone else. Vince was furious when the story got out and people who weren’t there heard all about it
