PWINSIDER.COM EXCLUSIVE: THE ROAD TO WRESTLEMANIA WILL HAVE TO CHANGE - MAJOR STAR DOWN TO INJURY AND ISN'T EXPECTED BACK IN TIME FOR FLAGSHIP PPV
by Mike Johnson @ 10:57 PM on 12/22/2008
World Wrestling Entertainment's plans for Wrestlemania were thrown out the window with word that Dave Batista, who was in the running for the Raw side of the Mania main event, has gone down to a torn hamstring.
Batista is expected to miss several months and will be undergoing surgery shortly, according to several sources within the company. The Randy Orton punt kick to the head last week was the storyline reason for Batista's disappearance from the company.
There's no word whether the company will acknowledge the legitimate reason for Batista's absence or will just put the heat on Randy Orton.
Batista's hamstring began giving him problems during the most recent European tour and has worsened since. This would be Batista's third major muscle tear, as he's had previous tears to the lat muscles in his back as and his triceps in 2006.
Word within the company is that as of now, they aren't expecting Batista back until June at the earliest, with a worse case scenario being August, so all Wrestlemania plans involving him are out the window for now. That certainly puts momentum towards Cena defending the World title against Randy Orton at the company's flagship PPV.

Huge news.

Could this be a Cena situation and he shows up and wins the Rumble?

Can Batista even climb a ladder?
Although I'd mark if someone took a ladder and just swung at the briefcase until it fell down.

He's still winning the Rumble...
He input the code wrong and got European Extreme mode instead.

They should do an angle where someone attacks all of the top stars. And then it's revealed to be Val Venis, each time he takes someone out he goes "Yes, one step closer!"
Then when he takes the last star out, he's in the ring celebrating shouting "Yes, I'll finally get pushed!"
And then "Just Close Your Eyes" plays and Christian comes out leaving Val in the ring cursing.

Screaming in pain?
good for the WWE reconizing one of their top stars is injured and needs the time off. Unlike Angle who can and will work through injuries making him go crazy when he gets addicted to pain killers.

I don't know. Think WWE would let anyone other than Cena overcome the odds like that?

Well I feel bad for anyone going down with injuries. But I think we need a Botchtista break. He's became stale lately, and him always having infinite title shots annoys me. So I'm not going to miss him right away.

Only Triple H gets 5 months of video packages.
Bats will likely get 2 months. Less than Cena, but still a respectable reminder.

It sucks really. Takes away from Wrestlemania somewhat. Regardless of what everyone thinks of his wrestling and character or whatever, he is a huge star and makes Wrestlemania bigger. That and the fact that I'll be there and I want to witness his huge fucking pyro again :D

It's never good when someone gets hurt, but I'm not going to miss Batista being on my TV. The time away will help him rest up the rest of his body, and when he returns, he will be a lot fresher and it'll be a lot more exciting than what he's currently doing.

I agree. Yes it's a blow for Mania, but in the long term it's for the best. He requested time off not long ago anyway so he's obviously not feeling himself and needs some time off to rest. This can be seen as a type of sabbatical for him also.

I dunno. I'm still not sold on it being legit.
I can see him entering #30 winning, going after Cena at Mania in an attempt to "out-do" Cena from his injury comeback.
It just seems odd to me that they wrote off Batista with a punt, during a match in which he seemed perfectly fine in. And now all of a sudden he has a torn hammy? I dunno, I could be wrong.

Never root for people to be hurt, and I hope everything works out for him.
As a viewer, I'm partially happy to see him on a hiatus, as he now won't take up a main event spot during Mania time.
I don't want the means of injury to be justified by the ends, but I will enjoy the product and wish him a healthy recovery.

On the flip side, when a guy who's old for his sport and injury prone heads out on a grueling schedule and gets injured....It's hard to really feel bad for the guy.
