Cena’s merchandise numbers for 2008 were the best of anyone in company history except Austin during his peak years, and ahead of 80s Hogan marks.

i heard rumors a few years back that at certain stores nation wide . merchandise was ringing up as certain superstars names . like say someone bought a kane action figure it would ring up as john cena . or a rey mysterio tshirt as HHH tshirt . stuff like that . maybe thats why he beat hogan.

Or, maybe he's just amazingly popular with people who buy merchandise? At live shows, he sells well. Really well. I don't know why his merch would sell well in venues, but not translate over to retailers, or why it would even be necessary to cook the books.

But still, if kids didn't like Cena, it wouldn't be selling. I'm not really trying to defend WWE as much as point out that they can only get this kind of marketing placement if they're actually moving the shit.

The problem isn't so much kids, as permissive parents who will buy anything kids scream for. Kids have always wanted what TV, radio, books, or sculpture told them to. Parents are supposed to be discerning and say "You don't really want to dress like a wigger from a carny sport."

I think it was Hogan and Nash.

I'm too lazy to check it right now but it's in Death of WCW.

A Fed-Ex bowl or something similar from 2001 has been the top spot of the Sports DVD sales until last year or so. Same SKU.

It's not like the WWE never told anyone not to make Triple H look bad in a video game or anything...

I'm not saying the books are cooked, mind you, so don't twist it, but it wouldn't shocked me if products were just generalised like that. After all, no one outside the business really gives a shit who or what a John Cena is. Even if he sells more than Hogan did back twenty years ago, prior to a business that had gone through such booms as the Attitude era.

Besides, there's a large and tangible gap between telling a video game mag not to show Triple H in a vulnerable position and altering numbers like that.

No, I implied that it's not beyond the WWE to want to make their top stars look good over say secondary players who also make the WWE a lot of money. I didn't say they were doing it in this particular case.

That's pretty much it. There is a new shirt for John Cena and Shawn Michaels almost every week, and the business is just a lot more flourished now than it was during the era of Hogan.

And to be honest, if Cena didn't sell as much as he did, I'd be worried. He's been shoved so far down our throats on one hand, and on the other there has to be some level of justification for that.

exactly. The business of merchandise is a bigger focus now that ever before. Hogan did have his name all over everything back in the day, but other stars had very limited gear. Now it seems like everyone has an entire line.
