ECW Reflections

Since its looking more and more probable that ECW will return, lets reflect shall we, what were some of your favourite ECW moments.
Me personally, it would have to be either, as sick as it was, the Scaffold fall, the barbed wire match between Funk and Sabu or Stairway to Hell 1 between Sabu and Sandman. But overall fav has to go to "The chairshot heard round the world" Dreamer v Raven.

My favorite ECW memory is Barely Legal. There was such a vibe at that show, a feeling that this was the start of something big. It wasn't their best PPV match-wise (I'd argue Heatwave '98 was their best), but it was a serious turning point. Sabu vs. Taz, Funk vs. Richards vs. Sandman, Storm vs. RVD, Eliminators vs. Dudleys...that's the show that sticks out in my mind.

Taz dropping the title in the 3 way dance with Tanaka and Mike Awesome. Not so much the match but the way Heyman and the locker room greeted him at the top of the ramp. They were crying and you could tell that this really was a family in a lot of ways; they didnt' wantt Taz to go to the WWE and in his heart, if not for the money, I don't think he wanted to go.

I've seen many full shows of theirs. Heatwave 98 was the best, only one that would really match any other PPV that WWE or WCW would put out.

The majority of it is, indeed, garbage wrestling.

Also, I'm glad to see that any company that gave Pitbull 2 and Shane Douglas 20 minutes went under.

My reflections are that ECW was a company that absolutely revolutionised the wrestling business as we knew it. It was the ultimate renegade and helped showcase 80% of the best talent seen on WCW/WWE TV for the last 8 years. However, it never once made any money and went out of business because it's owner is naive with money and thus felt the need to stab his honest employees in the back.

I agree with that statement. Some of their stuff (ex. New Jack,etc..)
was just complete "garbage" in a lot of people's views, but others did
enjoy it. That was what made E.C.W. a good company -- there really
was something for just about everyone who went.There was some of
the 'garbage' stuff,some 'lucha' style,cruiserweights,'old-school' style,
comedy,tits and ass,and even the big 'hoss' matches.

I remember a bunch of quality ECW matches coming to town (except
I had been going to ECW shows since 1995)...Shane Douglas (before
he got lazy) taking on Tully Blanchard for nearly an hour. Others with
Mikey Whipwreck, Dean Malenko, Stevie Richards, Chris Benoit, Public
Enemy, Kendall Windham, Marty Jannetty,and plenty of others.Actual wrestling bouts.

Later seeing ECW with Christian York & Joey Matthews, Little Guido &
Tony Mamaluke, Nova & Chris Chetti, Jerry Lynn, EZ Money, Hamrick,
Julio Dinero, Bam Bam Bigelow and lots of the others.

Sure,ECW did a lot of crap matches and angles,and had a lot of crap
performers (New Jack,Danny Doring,etc..); but every single company
that has ever existed has had their shares of that stuff.

Overall,on a ratings scale of 1-10,I give ECW a 9 1/2.....

When people think great champions you always hear Bret Hart, Ric Flair, Hogan, Shawn Michaels. I throw in Shane Douglas's name into that mix. Any guy who would willingly wrestle with a compound fracture in his wrist, fractured jaw, and a fractured cheek palete all at the same time, that says something about his work ethic.

I do agree that ECW had it's share of garbage wrestling, but I feel it overall showed more "Wrestling" then WWF did from 97-2000.

My favorite moment would have to be when Mikey Whipwreck and Taijiri won the Tag Team Titles for the very first time. I was so happy, and I remember yelling out the window, " MIKEY AND TAIJIRI DID IT!!"

Nope. You're not.

Actually, Tommy didn't do all that much "stupid stuff to put his life on the line," unless you count the scaffold match with Brian Lee.

Yes, there was a large segment of the ECW faithful who were out for blood, but I think most people watched it for the wrestling. People popped when New Jack came out with his cart full of weapons, but they went BALLISTIC when RVD and Jerry Lynn would go for a half-hour with their unique mix of mat, aerial, and just a hint of hardcore wrestling.

My greatest ECW moments were being at Heatwave 98 ( Mike Awesome's taunting plancha was badass)

And being at the first technical ECW TV taping ( they ended up using the one after it), that had Balls Mahoney and Spike Dudley Vs The Dudleys... Spike took a sick ass bumb through a flaming table.

Also, Taz making Shane Douglas Tap right after Shane holds up the gesture for the Triple Threat, looking like he's about to cry after Candido decked him.

ECW = workrate

Not all their matches were 5 stars, but no company can do that all the time. And for every hardcore match that was "garbage" there was one that was genuinely entertaining. And thank the wrestling gods for ECW, because without Vince stealing all those ideas to create the "Attitude Era," we'd all be watching the same kind of stories the WWF was producing in the late 80's/early 90's. Wrestling repo men, garbage men, mounties, etc...none of that would've changed without the kind of stories the ECW was telling.

I remember that bump. That WAS sick! That's why, even though he's been horribly buried and his character has become extremely uninteresting, I still LOVE Spike Dudley.

I think my favorite Spike bumb was at heatwave 98 though, when he jumped off the ladder that was on the inside of the ring, to the outside through a table ( it may have been two, and I don't recall is the guy moved or not). I just have this image of spike sailing through the air.

I'll admit I was once a nay sayer cos when ppl started telling me about it, I thought it was just a bunch of guys wanting to hit each with staplers and that kinda stuff for pointless reasons, then when I sat down and watched, I loved it.
I must've seen every ECW encounter between Super Crazy and Tajiri umpteen billion times cos they were that good. The only RVD/Jerry Lynn I haven't seen was I think at a Guilty As Charged that had the insane Tornado DDT.
Lets face it, if it wasn't for ECW, Raven would still be Jonny freakin Polo, amd guys like WWE, TNA and WCW wouldn't know about Rey Mysterio, Psicosis or Juvi (or at least thats my opinion).
As many people have pointed out, ECW also had an incredible workrate and deserves all the props in the world for running as long as it did.
ECW was the innovator of so many things and people need to look back on what ECW was doing and think how the current wrestling scene can learn from it in terms of how to hold a match and a crowd cos they were two things that ECW could do very well. The InVasion and guys like RVD and Heyman prove that the ECW moniker is still very much in the hearts and minds of wrestling fans and if it can touch so many fans so much that they still chant it, then surely its still worth something today and the past superstars deserve as much air time as they can get. Well, thats my take on it.

As for me and my ECW moments, I didn't start watching till a little more than a year before the company shut down. However, I do remember some great moments.

Taz returning to ECW after Mania 2000 to defeat Mike Awsome while under WWF contract. Also I have a tape laying around my house somewhere with a great promo between Steve Corino and The Sandman just a week or to after Steve won the ECW Championship. This was when Steve had just become a face and decided to challenge anyone that night to a title match. The Sandman then promply came out and Steve quickly reverted to his cowardish heel character by trying to back out of the match.
