So with Steph "firing" Jericho and Jericho thinks Vince will come back and bring Jericho back to Raw.
However, Vince decides to stand by Steph's decision. So Jericho is still "fired" from Raw. Jericho shows up on Smackdown and takes out Taker and thus building up to a Mania match between the two.
It's obvious they are building towards JBL/HBK at Mania so Taker/HBK is out of the picture. Jericho needs something and so does Taker since neither appear to be getting a title match on the show.
Add to the fact that they have never had a program with one another.

I hope WWE is this smart. Jericho/Taker could put on a spectacular match at 'Mania.

Oh and Jericho calls Taker a hypocrite because he's dead and we all know he's really not, even though he is or something...

I suggested this as a potential World Heavyweight Title Match, which I felt had awesome potential. If they don't put Taker against HBK, I can't see a better alternative than Chris Jericho.

It'd be a great match, but it seems standard. They'd have an amazing program/matches, don't get me wrong, but the whole concept doesn't feel tailor made for Wrestlemania the way an HBM/Taker one does.
I guess maybe I just have my heart set on that.
Jericho will make the move to Smackdown eventually, and they could have a nice program there. For now I'd rather see Taker/HBM and Jericho get involved in something else for Mania.
I do agree though, it does look like they're going to be foolish enough to pass on HBM/Taker in favore of JBL/HBM (boggles my mind). In that case, I'll take this as consolation.

If they don't do something like this, and Jericho gets involved in the McMahon storyline that seeds are being planted for, I wouldn't mind seeing Jericho vs Shane. I don't care what anyone says, I'd enjoy the shit out of that match if it went off well.

Is there any rationale behind this other than "They've never fought before" and "It would rule"?

"they have nothing else to do"
It wouldn't be hard. Have Jericho come out on Smackdown and cut a promo on how he refuses to leave the WWE until the people save themselves, and that he has to show them the way from their ignorant ways, etc, etc - cue Undertaker music and pyro, cue Jericho scaredy-cat act, Undertaker comes out, Jericho scampers - feud begins.

Well, I came up with the idea for the match when I was trying to think of a main event that was truly and honestly "special enough" for WrestleMania. The most obvious way to do that is to get the top face to battle the top heel, in a feud that would hopefully have a great story to it.
Chris Jericho is probably the best heel the WWE has right now. Edge is also awesome, but I just don't think he has the lightning in the bottle that he had earlier this year. Jericho is just a far fresher character being portrayed by a guy who I just think is generally better. The Undertaker, while I may not like him much, is probably the most over guy in the company. This would be especially true at a WrestleMania event in Houston.
