Bob Holly, who had been with World Wrestling Entertainment since 1994 (remember Thurmann "Sparky" Plugg, the race car driver?) was officially released today by the company in their latest talent cost cutting.

Holly had not been seen on camera since he and Cody Rhodes lost the WWE World Tag Team belts to Ted DiBiase....and Cody Rhodes when Rhodes turned on Holly in June 2008 at the Night of Champions PPV. There was a backstage incident shortly after that led WWE to sent Holly home to deal with some personal issues. He never worked another match for the company but had been kept under contract and listed as a talent moved during the most recent Draft.

Holly had been dealing with several health issues in recent years including a bad staph infection that led to fears his career was over, but he did eventually return in 2006.

Beyond the Tag Team titles, which he held six times with several partners, Holly may be best remembered for feuding with his late "cousin" Crash Holly (Mike Lockwood) and for holding the WWF Hardcore title, including a memorable feud with Al Snow.

Unlike several recent releases this week, WWE did acknowledge Holly's departure.

An ignorant, hot headed relic like Holly would have been of no use to WWE in any other role outside of the ring, and you can't argue his in-ring options at this stage of his career had been completely exhausted, so what else were they to do?

His longevity probably meant he was earning a fairer whack than he deserved too, too much to even keep him around in a humble jobber role. You might think "heartless bastards, he's been there for 15 years!" but how many of those years has he actually been a productive member of the roster? He's more than outkicked his coverage with a 15 year run, I don't blame them whatsoever for this decision, I'm just surprised it's taken this long.

Far more surprised at Venis than Baldcore.

Venis, in a jobber role, would help his young, green opponents learn to work a basic match and make them look good along the way. Holly would just beat the shit out of them and then lay down for three seconds at the end of it.

Holly was sort of like the "anti-Venis." He really connected to the fans, but just wasn't as good in the ring, as good on the mic or as easy to work with. If Venis was cut, it really doesn't surprise me that Holly went.

I used to be a mark for Holly, I really did. I thought he was charismatic, and a damn solid and likable worker. Then he tainted his image with his shit with Matt Cappotelli and Rene Dupree, etc. He just doesn't strike me as a functioning member of society. If the WWE wants to move away from the carny image, getting rid of guys who uphold it like Hardcore Holly would be a good move.

Hopefully the man saved his money, because he would have gotten enough of it over the years to live pretty comfortably on (medical issues aside). I believe that he was the oldest active talent under full-time contract to the WWE (Hacksaw is older, but only appears occasionally), and given that he never really accomplished too much, it made sense to cut him.

There was potential for him to team with Goldust, or something, against Cody Rhodes & Ted DiBiase (which would have been comedic gold, to be honest), but Holly apparently taped some backstage promos that were too shit to air. At this stage of his career, that's just not really acceptable.

The thing about Hardcore Holly was that he never was a jobber, really. The last time we saw him he lost a championship he had been holding for months and months. I could never understand why Holly was in his position, whereas Venis was in his.

Well Holly has been a jobber. Problem is, they kept trying to re-establish him as a force to be reckoned with every few years, then bump him back down to jobber, then build him back up...

You can salvage a guy from a jobber reputation maybe once with some good booking, twice perhaps with a major character overhaul or repackage, but to just expect the fans to buy the same old Hardcore Holly who a couple of months back was jobbing on the undercard suddenly being a top threat as, I dunno, say the challenger for the WWE Championship on pay-per-view, like he was at Royal Rumble 2004... Holly just got lost in the shuffle over the years, not that he had that much to offer in my view but there were a few moments when WWE could have pulled the trigger on a run at the top for him, and they didn't... I suppose that speaks volumes in itself as to how much faith they had in him as anything other than squash match fodder.

For the 15 years that Hardcore Holly has been in the WWE, he has had barely a years worth of TV time. Probably only a week's worth of that was worth watching. 78% of the "worth watching" stuff involved him being injured.

I'd actually sort of get a laugh out of Bob Terwilliger showing up in TNA trying to get into the Main Event Mafia, only to get his ass kicked. But that would mean a paycheck for Gentle Bob, and that's not really wise.

Of the talent released from the WWE over the past few months, the few I would pick up would be:

Super Crazy
Elijah Burke
D-Lo Brown
Mickie Hensen
Tim White

And maybe Mike Kruel and Shawn Spears, but I'd see how they went on the independent circuit first.
