I'm surprised at no Gran Torino for Eastwood. But that's about the only thing that pops out at me.

Curious Case of Benjamin Button was disappointing as hell. It was so well made visually, but the story was just so bad. Did not give a shit what happened at all. It was just like all already done so many times.

Haven't seen The Reader yet because it just looks like a typical Oscar bait movie.

Frost/Nixon I heard was kinda shitty but I will prob watch it I guess.

Milk was good. Slumdog Millionaire was pretty good. Out of those choices, I hope Milk wins, but Slumdog will win.

Also been watching as many of the short film nominations I can find on the internet the past hour or so. A few of them are mad good.

Alright, I'll be the geeky fan boy and say it...I'm upset Dark Knight didn't get the Best Picture nod. It was one of the best movies of the year, and probably better than most other stuff that did get nominated. I'll be fair and say I haven't gotten a chance to watch them all yet, but they all appear to be the normal overacted, boring dramatic crap that always gets nominated and probably alot less interesting than TDK was.

I mean even Jaws and Star Wars got the at least the nod when they were originally releashed, I think TDK could have gone over one of these 2009 nominations as well.

Definitely feel like Dark Knight and Gran Torino should've got Best Picture noms. Eastwood should've got into Best Actor as well.

Pretty big surprise to see Robert Downey for Tropic Thunder though. That's cool.

My picks:

Best Picture
Milk

Best Director
Danny Boyle - Slumdog Millionaire

Best Actor
Sean Penn - Milk

Best Actress
Anne Hathaway - Rachel Getting Married

Best Supporting Actor
Heath Ledger - The Dark Knight

Best Supporting Actress
Viola Davis - Doubt

Not necessarily who I want to win, but who I believe will.

JT

JT's Predictions...

Best Picture (just because too many critics have been drooling over it)
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

Best Director (this is definately a guess, and just because my best pic prediction)
David Fincher - The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

Best Actor
Sean Penn - Milk
(second guess would be Mickey Rourke, but pretty sure Sean Penn)

Best Actress
Meryl Streep - Doubt

Best Supporting Actor
Heath Ledger - The Dark Knight

Best Supporting Actress (this one was just a random guess)
Viola Davis - Doubt

Also on a note, found it funny that Robert Downey got a nomination for a character who goes over the top to win Academy Awards and recognitions.

What Would Kevin Do?

I'm not surprise Dark Knight isn't up for Best Picture, because the Oscars are still uppity... However, Gran Torino got shafted.

I've been reading a few articles here and there about some critics who really want a change on how or who votes for these. Of course, Dark Knight is right in the middle on really where do the Oscars go from there?

And this morning the question has been answered. They're not ready or too scared to bring in all the big summer blockbuster movies and genres into the fold yet. If you bring in Dark Knight, you got to give some consideration for Iron Man as well. But unfortunately those two are gonna be fighting for all the tech awards.

As for the big noms. Kinda surprised Van Sant beat out Aronofsky in the Direction catagory. Downey Jr. getting a nod for Tropic Thunder was sweet.

But FINALLY, starting tomorrow all these movies (minus Benjamin Button) open up in my neck of the woods. So I'll be on a grind for a while before I get some solid picks up.

They were consistent with the formula for nominating the Best Picture nominees:

Biopic of a quasi-historical figure (bonus points for being an American politician).

Movie which depicts a 20th century American historical event.

World War II movie.

The "innovative" structuring of a plot movie.

The big movie production company's two and a half hour "ace in the hole" December release movie.

Best Picture
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button - I agree with AAA, visually looked good but the story was pretty meh.

Frost/Nixon - I really got into this movie, but artistically it didn't really do anything new for me.

Milk - My pick for the win. All around good movie I felt, great cast, great directing. The movie moved well without many slow points.

The Reader - Haven't seen this yet, will get on it though.

Slumdog Millionaire - Good movie, can see this getting the win as it has a decent amount of Buzz. Reminds me of position Crash was in, probably didn't deserve the win, but I can see it winning just to win. Great movie but see it getting lost over time.

Best Director - My pick is Benjamin Button.

Best Actor - Sean Penn/Mickey Rourke.
Sean Penn took over the character for me. I never really was like oh look its just Sean Penn doing another movie, or anything like that. It didn't remind me of him at all.
Mickey Rourke did a great job with The Wrestler as well.

(note have yet to see The Visitor)

Best Actress - Only movie I've seen is Doubt. I thought Meryl Streep was amazing in it too. It made me want to go find more movies with her in it.
Anne Hathaway - Rachel Getting Married

Best Supporting Actor
Looking at the list I think Heath Ledger may take it. Haven't seen Revolutionary Road so don't know about that. Philip Seymour Hoffman was good in doubt, nothing spectacular though pretty standard PSH stuff I though.

Best Supporting Actress - I don't care who wins this as none of them made me think oh shit really.

My thoughts:

It is an absolute disgrace that Gran Torino is not in for best screenplay and best director. None of the acting was out of this world, but the direction and final product were among the most compelling, true, well-told movies I've ever seen. It was perfect how the story wasn't overdone or made "Hollywood" and how everything came together. That really irritated me.

Second, the black lady who got best supporting actress nod for Doubt was seriously in the movie for like five minutes. WTF?

Jeritron
01-23-2009, 03:04 PM
Well, I loved Slumdog Millionaire, but I felt the other two best movies of the year were The Wrestler and The Dark Knight. The academy was on a roll for a while with it's voting but it looks like it's back to snobby days. The films nominated are great but lets be honest, Frost/Nixon better than The Wrestler and The Dark Knight? It was a great movie, but no way.

Oh well. Mickey Rouker and Heath Ledger will probably pick up actor and supporting.

The best director category is probably the strangest. It mirrors best picture, but it's a shame to see no nomination for Nolan or Aronofsky, or even Eastwood.
Also, Eastwood doesn't deserve the best actor trophy, but he deserved a nod. Suprised Jenkins edged him out.

Slumdog was a pretty good flick. It was a bit long and took awhile to get going, but I think it was pretty deserving of the awards it won.

Lawl @ Doubt not winning a damn thing despite pretty much being produced solely for the purpose of winning Academy Awards, though. Streep was good in that movie, but there was just something about that movie that rubbed me the wrong way.

(Thinly veiled priest molestation joke not intended. I swear.)

Is Sean Penn the John Cena of film awards?

More like JBL. Pretty good on the stick, but no one really wants to see him and he's a complete douchebag in real life.
