I spent my first few months just messing around, getting taught random stuff from friends, but then I took a few lessons, and learned some scales and some theory.

Now, I'm actually taking what I learned in my lessons and trying to apply it. I am trying to learn more theory, cause I want to be able to improvise a bit better than I can now.

So far, I only know the pentatonic scales, and I want to work on them a bit more before I move onto something new.

What type of scales should I learn next?

Depends on the kinda music you want to learn.

I'd say that learning major and natural minor scales are a good idea no matter what.

Pentatoncs are awesome, especially as training wheels. If you know the minor pentatonic scale progression, you've got a library of like 9,000 songs...

Major scales are easy, progression wise. It's R-W-W-H-W-W-W-H

(Example: E: E-F#-G#-A-B-C#-D#-E)

R=Root note, W=Whole step (Two frets) H=Half step (one fret)

Then, there's minor. I'm just do the Natural minor

R-W-H-W-W-H-W-W

(Example: e: E-F#-G-A-B-C-D-E)

What do you know about chord structuring?

Chords are built off of a given scale. If you're in the key of C, you know the notes are (generally): C-D-E-F-G-A-B-C

Chords start with a given note and build up essentially on every other note.


So, for the first chord, C, you'd have C-D-E-F-G-A-B-C

C to E is two whole steps and E to G is 1.5, so it's a major chord.

A to C is 1.5 steps, and C to E is 2, and that makes it minor.
If we looked at A (The relative minor of this key, incidentally), you'd build it like this: C-D-E-F-G-A-B-C-D-E

Basically dude, just go and have fun. Practice is the time to fuc</>k around with different shit and test yourself, finding stuff you like. It doesn't matter if you haven't played with a band before. Everyone starts somewhere. They'll understand. Just go and have a blast, and I guarantee that you will. :y:

When Fishboy and I get to work on our EP, we're prolly gonna leave a recorder with an omni on, because of all the shit we do while rehearsing. If we put as much effort into a release as we do into having fun with our music, we'd have like 9 albums out. :lol:
