If Kevin Steen lost weight, he'd be a great wrestler.

I recently finished watching Ring of Honor's Final Battle 2008 (which I also attended) and I took particular interest in Kevin Steen & El Generico's match against The Age of the Fall. I was watching the way Kevin Steen moved around the ring, not only how he chained moves together but how he commanded the attention of the crowd. I remembered seeing a few of his matches on PWG Sells Out so I decided to watch that again and once again I saw a guy that knows how to work a crowd and craft a match.

His ability in the ring is quite good. He has pretty much everything it takes to be a great wrestler.

Great wrestler to me means an amazing worker, not necessarly world renown or in WWE. For example I think of Bryan Danielson, Alex Shelly & Christopher Daniels as amazing workers.

I think the thing that hurts Kevin Steen is that he is overweight. He's not in the position that a guy like Samoa Joe is. Someone like Joe simply shouldn't lose weight or else he'd totally lose his appeal (aka being a bad ass that is agile for his size). Kevin Steen would be better if he lost some weight or rather replaced fat with muscle.

If Kevin Steen, or "Mr. Wrestling" as his gimmick entails, were to gain muscle and lose fat not only would he be quicker and stronger in the ring he'd also be more asteticlly appealing. As it stands now he has to wear a bad looking siglet in his matches to hide his fat. If we were more toned and fit he'd be able to wear either regular trunks or something that looks more traditional. This would help him greatly to get more appeal amongst Indy fans atleast.

If he were to get into better astetic shape I think he could actually be bigger than just an indy star, he could probably make it all the way to WWE. The way he works the mic and the ring would really lend itself to a big market.

Don't get me wrong Steen is the goods as is but it just looked more in shape, he could be great.

Hmm, I'm not too sure. I'm not on the Steen bandwagon, but everything I have heard has been positive. Are you sure Steen wouldn't lose some of his appeal by becoming a muscle-bound dude who can wrestle?

I mean, it's not like William Regal is ripped to shit-house.

Well, their is a difference Regal isn't fat. When Regal was on the roids he actually had more appeal to the fans as bad as that sounds.

As I stated in the opening of the thread his appeal isn't that he's a fat guy as is Morishima's or Samoa Joe's appeal, his appeal is just that he's a solid worker. I just think Steen has everything it takes to be a truly great worker.

It just seems like a waste to not got balls out to try to be the best you can. Its not like losing weight is something out of his control. A lot of wrestlers are hindered by stuff out of their control. Benoit was hindered by his height, Val Venis was hindered by being too nice of a guy to fight for a spot, and Snitsky was hindered by having no talent. Benoit couldn't get taller, Val couldn't become an asshole and Snitsky couldn't get talent... But Kevin Steen can lose some fat.

I do see your point. I'm not acquainted enough with Kevin Steen to know, but I'll take your word for it. I'm just thinking of a lot of technical wrestlers, though, and someone like Dean Malenko had an odd figure.

That being said, it wouldn't hurt Steen if he became a cut, wrestling machine.

The thing that potentially separates Kevin Steen from other "technical wrestlers" is that he also has presance and personality. If Kevin Steen lost the fat and gained muscle he'd be similar to Curt Hennig though with less fluidity yet a more "lively" (aka ariel) move set.

A couple years ago I bought a random wrestling dvd from the pay a dollar store in my town. It's like this really poorly done collection of random indie matches and such.

Anyway one of the matches was Kevin Steen vs Beef Wellington. Steen was a lot leaner than he is in any of the recent pictures I've seen of him, and he was amazing to watch.

I guess what I'm trying to say is I totally agree with you. Also nothing can compare to the awesomeness of the ass-punch.

A tag team compromised of Scotty Goldman and Beef Wellington could represent our galaxy and win the Tag Team Championship of the Universe. No question.

This thread has made me realise that I need to check out more Kevin Steen. I've always thought of him as slightly "boring." Not boring boring, I've just never been influenced enough to go watch any of his stuff. El Generico on the other hand...

What Would Kevin Do?

I agree.

However, his look fits his personality. He has that sort of "High school bully" image. He's not a jock, he's just a prick who's not really in great shape, but is a tough fucker. Plus, his shape is great just for when he busts out a moonsault or swanton.

With that said, yeah, he looks pretty out of shape, almost like he doesn't give a shit about his conditioning. It's a double edged sword.

On a side note, in Detroit El Generico busted out a standing moonsault. Steen comes in, points at Generico and shouts "Just like you!" Then he gets ready to do a moonsault... After a bit of preparation, he gave up, turned around, and hit a senton. It was rather humorous.

If he wants to make it in WWE he'll probably have to become more lean. His look pretty much suits his personality. Personally, I think he could benefit with a somewhat upgraded image. Maybe just get cooler looking tights.

There's a local indie promotion, C4 Wrestling, and he wrestles every show (about 4-5 times per year). He's a fun guy who tries really hard to involve the crowd. I remember one time someone brought a small dog to the show, Kevin was thrown into the guard rail right in front of the people with the dog and he groaned for a bit, saw the dog and went "Ohhhhhh, puppy" in a cute voice, then continued to groan on the guard rail.

I'm not a huge fan of his, but I'm not not a fan. He's pretty entertaining and has a lot of fun out there even if there are less than 75 people.

You forgot that he shows how harcore wrestling how it should be done. The Gurellia Warfare match between him a Super Dragon on the PWG sells out DVD is just brilliant. His in ring technical skills are just awesome. I Don't care about size because i believe it can be outshined in ability. He has the skills to keep up with the big dogs in the yard. I would hope he stays away from the WWE. Its seems like the only way you can really get a push is being related to a wrestler or by being a veteran. SO when actual good guys like Kevin Steen and Brian Dainelson go to the WWE. WHich i am not saying he are but its proven fact that they get pissed on and made to look like shit.

I don't order the DVDs, and being in Australia, I obviously can't go to their shows, but I do catch the odd match on YouTube. I do read the reports and stuff, but that doesn't translate how good Kevin Steen exactly is a lot of the time.

Unless your name is CM Punk, The Brian Kendrick or Jamie Noble. In the later's case, you look like shit on TV, but get two paychecks.

Yeah your right but even they get the shit end of the stick most of the time. I mean think about it.
