There are rumors floating around about the PSP-4000 coming out this year, also. Curious to see which rumor will be the real deal.

Excited about the new PSP? Well too bad, we're going to talk about it anyway. The fairly popular Sony handheld device has undergone some helpful but rather basic upgrades since the original model made its debut, but sources claim that the upcoming PSP-4000 will undergo a large redesign. And no, the new edition will not carry a PSP 2 title, or so the sources claim

They're missing some prime opportunities to buffer the PS3 by putting good title concepts on the PSP instead. I really don't know which pipe Sony's toking from that's convinced them they can keep up on the handheld front. It's a waste of money--money they sort of need.

There are actually a bunch of sweet games on the PSP now and it's got a lot of other functionality, but it's still fucking ridiculous that they're trying to compete with the DS. And now the cell phone game market has exploded, so it's only gonna get rougher.

Aww, its cute to see that sony still seem to think they can compete with nintendo in the handheld market. Nintendo is a fucking juggernaut in that area.

Well, the DS was my first portable system. And I rememvber how pissed my brothers were when it came out cause they'd just gotten GBA Micros or whatever that last model was.
Consoles don't change this much and when they do, it's usually an internal redesign that just uses smaller parts to do the same shit. Nothing like these fucking upgrades that handhelds seem to get.

Aww, its cute to see that sony still seem to think they can compete with nintendo in the handheld market. Nintendo is a fucking juggernaut in that area.
The flip side to that is that Nintendo's been a juggernaut largely because they were unchallenged for so long. There hasn't been a serious contender since the early 90s. Sony's got the firepower to do it simply by longevity. In a generation or two, they can compete. Because they're a massive corporation instead of a dinky game making company, they can afford to hang in for a couple gens at a loss.
That being said, I think the PSP was kind of dumb and hope any new system they make is better thought out. The idea of trying to push a new proprietary media format alone makes me want to kick the designers in the balls.
However, all it would really take to get ahead is to cement itself as a serious handheld (instead of a wannabe iPod, Game Boy, and DVD player in one), since Nintendo's off doing the "we appeal to people who want to buy a web browser and a calculator instead of games" thing.
Of course, Sony'll probably make a handheld that runs on BD and costs 5,000 bucks just to prove how big a fuckup they are collectively.

I was just browsing the PSN and Sony is on the right track in some areas. They've got old, hard to find games for download (found out I coulda got Guilty Gear Judgment for fucken $5 via d/l instead of dropping $35 on eBay), PSX ports for d/l, PS3 d/l games ported over, demos and other shit.
As far as this whole Skype, movies and music ish, whatever.

Or to yank features like the PS3. ;)
But that's the thing. Consoles don't. Handhelds do. Hell, in other regions, they did this with some of the last couple of gens of console, too. We've got the DSi coming out now, the third design of the DS line which has different features (Granted, DS to DSL wasn't a HUGE change, but it was a change), so it's not like there's a huge difference between the number of iterations. Now, if it is a new console instead of a redesign (PSP 2), you did just buy a four year old system. That's about the lifespan between the GBA and DS, for example, so it should be an assumed risk.

Well, fuck. But now I'm gonna need a much bigger memory stick pro duo than the crappy 1gb one it came with if all the games are gonna be online only.

I actually really like the PSP. The DJ Max series, the Patapon games, and more recently Star Ocean. Even the shitty FF Tactics is still worth playing despite the constant frame drops. I think the system was cast off by most people when it first came out since all it had was a bunch of PSX ports, and UMD movies (aka: rofl who cares) But now I really like the system, especially once you put some custom firmware on it.
If that concept art turns out to be true, I'm a little concerned at the portability of it. As it is, I can barely fit the PSP in my pocket, and I'm surely not going to put something with a screen like that in anything but a protective case. Plus, I'm guessing it's going to cost at least $300 at launch..

It's got some games worth having, that's for sure. Kinda pissed that I'm gonna need to drop mad cash to upgrade the save space once the games are no longer in disc form. Memory stick pro duos have a potential max capacity of 32gb, but they only have 16gb ones out now. Some games are 1gb in size or bigger.

We're talking about games of up to 2 GB downloaded solely to memory sticks. Sounding fishy yet? It also requires access to a computer and management software, no?
Adding games to PSN is one thing, because it's not the sole realm of access.
Funky Fly

You don't need access to a computer, just a hot spot. And it's because it's retarded that I think it has a possibility of being legit. This is Sony.

Ah, yes. Downloading a file over a Gig from a WiFi hot spot. That's an even better one.
Sony's unlikely to be this dumb. People keep rumouring this shit and building mockups for shit that's not realistic. It's odd that Eurogamer's anonymous source just happens to parallel a fan-made mockup, all things considered.

DS + EDGE card + 2GB Micro SD card
4 Wii Games
3 PC games
