Had Netflix for awhile. Loved it. Made me lots of $$$ selling copied movies. Switched to Blockbuster Online so I could also get in store rentals along with 1 free game rental each month. They then dropped the free game rental, upped the monthly price and cut my plan down as well. I dropped Blockbuster and then tried Netflix again because they started the 360 streaming shit. My connection was too slow and it took like 10 minutes for it to start and the picture was extremely grainy. I canceled my trial.

They need to sort out the xbox live part of it for Europe the cunts, I'd happily pay a fee for unlimited movies streamed on my xbox.

It's much more limited than the DVD service. I mean, I'm not complaining, but I use online to supplement my mail service. the digital service sometimes has problems, and on top of that, the selection is limited.

Not to mention my biggest gripe, some series are only partially available on instant.

I queued up Roar a while back, because it was recommending me Heath Ledger stuff and I was curious. Then I saw it was available for Instant, so I signed up. And then like half the episodes are "on disc only."

Okay, so not so bad, since I was only casually interested. Then I watch the first 12 eps of "Dead Like Me" and find out the last two eps of season 1 are disc only.

But there's still a ton of stuff to watch on there.

And for the quality issues, D-Mac's right as far as I can tell. Even when it's pulling the "your connection's slowed" on me, I'm getting DVD quality. I'm watching the Office (US version) in HD right now, and the picture's significantly better than broadcast HD. It's not QUITE BD quality, but it's still solid.

Ended up putting my netflix on hold for time being. Feel like all I do is watch tv these days. Seeing as I have my regular shows, I download stuff, and had 3 netflix dvds coming all the time it was brutal. Half the time it seeme dlike I was forcing myself to watch the things I rent. Netflix has a $7.99 instant watch only plan now. Will be switching to this, since I have the Blu Ray plan and it's going up another buck, and they have that 30 day waiting on new Blu Rays bullshit. I just download Blu Ray rips to my PS3 now anyway with the occasional buy.

It's a rumor, but I read somewhere that they might be phasing out the DVD by mail alltogether and just be a streaming service.

That has been a rumor for a long time now. I think eventually they will go full streaming but not anytime soon

They'll go 100% streaming when they can get the vast majority of their catalog on it, which they aren't even close to yet.

It's a rumor, but I read somewhere that they might be phasing out the DVD by mail alltogether and just be a streaming service.

They've implied that as their eventual goal, and now everyone is acting like it's going to happen next Thursday.

I don't mind the concept, but if they do this, they need to have a bigger library and stop with the bullshit of pulling series. I assume it has to do with licensing, but if they insist on going digital, they need to make the content available.

If they had a larger selection, I probably would never use the DVD service anyway.

I always thought it was dumb as hell to pay for access to tv shows/ movies when they could be had from sites like hulu or torrent sites, but after getting blazed and being able to watch Season 1 of 30 Rock essentially on demand in HD, I'm a fan of the service.

Do you guys use Netflix often? Think it will be worth it in the long run?

Eklipse

Netflix instant stream is awesome. I have it both on my Samsung blu ray player and my PS3.

Watched every episode of "My Name Is Earl."

Working on "That 70's Show" now.

I love it.

Xero
02-12-2011, 08:40 PM
Absolutely love it. It's on demand content done right. I've seriously not watched anything except RAW on TV for the past two weeks. Everything else has been Netflix.

Kind of expecting the price to go up, but not for a while. I also hope that the companies keep embracing it and don't force "tiers" onto Netflix or something, or just entirely take their libraries down from it because they see it as a threat. Though I don't see that being a huge problem for me, as the vast majority of what I watch is at least 5 years old, and by that time (5 years after it's aired/released, at least) the content is pretty much past its time of real revenue streams outside of DVD releases.

The one downside is that I'm paranoid that I'm going to cause a RROD to my 360 because it's on like 500% more than it had been in months (I tend to get into something on Netflix in cycles).

SlickyTrickyDamon

If they raise the price they should add video games.

I wouldn't be surprised if Netflix buys up Gamefly, or starts a competing business (with which they'd easily overtake Gamefly). But I'm talking strictly for streaming. Could easily see that going up to something like $20, and honestly it'd be worth it.

Ha! That's exactly how I am. If it wasn't for sports I don't think I'd watch t.v. at all.

With all my favorite shows like House, Breaking Bad, Lost when it was on... I usually am so caught up in school/work that I miss the episodes when they originally air and end up catching bits and pieces via Hulu. With Netflix I can pretty much just take a weekend to chill and catch up. So refreshing.

It's some kind of rotation, but there is usually a new batch of stuff at least once a month.

Xero
03-16-2011, 06:08 PM
The thing about the new releases not being on there, I think is more about the companies wanting to control their own content as long as they can. Recently they started or are going to start giving currently in theaters movies on PPV channels/On Deman for like $30. But even on Netflix, a lot of movies have a month wait between release and being available on DVD. Obviously to sell as many as they can.

As I've said before, I think we may see a "Premium" Netflix in the future where you get this whole back catalog, but also you can pay a premium either per title or per month to see more current releases, just when they're released.

Either way we will eventually see them, whether on Netflix or somewhere else online. It's going to happen.

This fucking price hike is annoying.

I like having the streaming and 1 disc DVD plan for 1 or 2 dollars more so I can get a dvd that's not streaming if I want to. For as little as I use the dvd's though, I'm not going to pay an extra 6 bucks a month for that.

Boo.

I enjoy my 7 year grandfathered Blockbuster Online Plan - 3 Blu Rays out at a time for $20 and I get unlimited in store exchanges that I can use for games instead of movies if I want, though we've gone from 3 Blockbuster stores here to just one.

No streaming option, but my low cap on my internet pretty much prevents that anyway.

I had one of those way awesome Blockbuster plans, then I cancelled it after all the stores around me closed.

Droford
07-12-2011, 07:36 PM
Id probably keep mine even if the stores closed since downgrading the plan to no instore returns would cost me more. Ive had the unlimited 3 out plan since 2004 and when it started it only cost $17.99. I was hit with 1 $2 price increase back in 2007, and then they didnt increase my price for Blu Ray or the Instore Return plans. The current 3 out unlimited instore return plan costs like $30 now for new customers. Blockbuster also doesnt have the 28 day waiting period for new releases but it often doesnt matter since the new releases are backed up too much to have much of a chance at getting them within the 28 day window anyway.

I know over the same period of time Netflix has raised prices on all customers just about every year...so the Blockbuster Online portion of Blockbuster is very nice. I probably can get 12-15 or so movies out a month. If the Red Box/Blockbuster Boxes around here were to ever get a decent selection of Blu Ray movies I might consider canceling but until then I stick with it.

My Blockbuster rates kept going up so we canceled it. There are also zero stores around me now. The one across the street from me closed a few months back. Fuck em

Gonna go streaming only. Saves me money I guess and will just download the shit they don't stream. Fuck em

I went from $13.98 (I get blu-rays) and it's going to $19.98. That's fucking robbery.

The stock keeps going up and they throw this out to us hard workers at a time like this.

Kinda makes me wanna take a look at Blockbuster's deal.

Droford
07-13-2011, 10:45 PM
Blockbuster would probably be even more expensive with no streaming.

Blockbusters deal is only good if you have an actual store near you. What I do is watch my movies on fridays or saturdays, take em back to the store and exchange for a new movie to watch saturday or sunday, take it back to the store on monday, and they ship out a new movie by tuesday which usually gets to me by Friday. Rinse/Repeat. Though I have the major issue that my now one local store hates blu ray, but you can exchange a movie for a game..and you can keep movies/games from the store for as long as you like, they just wont ship out a new movie to you until you return the store rental.

So I'm paying like 80 bucks for Amazon Prime anyway.

I didn't get it for Video on Demand, but they offer it to me on top of the free two-day shippiung. That's a necessity here because the post office are a bunch of package abusing retards.

If I buy a Roku, that's about 2/3 a year of Netflix streaming and I can stream to my TV for "free." Even when you consider that I'm paying for Prime, that's annual cost of half the price of a year of netflix streaming and one up front investment that would take the first year to a little over a year's cost.

Is there ANY reason I sholdn't just drop Netflix?

Netflix is starting to remind me of AOL in the 90s. It was the first company to fully harness this market, but as competition comes in from deep pocketed competitors I think they're going to have a harder time. Amazon Prime and Hulu prime are starting to look like more attractive options for me because most current shows are up instantly the next day on those sites in addition to having previous seasons while Netflix only has previous seasons. Also, if Yahoo purchases Hulu as rumored that's even deeper capital.

Plus if Netflix continues to acquire and produce original content, cable and movie providers might start to pull content and give it to more neutral providers like Hulu or Amazon Prime. Showtime already did it with Dexter and Californication after Netflix scooped up House of Cards.

The X-men cartoon has rekindled my interest in the comic books, movies and games. It's one of those shows that I used to watch as a kid, but only remember bits and pieces of. Being able to go back and watch and get the back stories on all the characters is awesome. Seems like I'll be keeping my subscription for at least one more month.

On a more random note, Flashpoint is also a really good show.

The price hike is still staying in effect though regardless of the removal of Qwikster.

Stocks-wise, not much has changed since everyone is still pissed at the price hike more than the decision to split the company into 2 mini-companies.

Also won't know until October 24 how many out of the 25 million subscribers dropped but the company hinted it was huge and they expected at least 1/3 less in revenue as a result.

It was 1 million dropped. Read it on CNN. I'll find the article if you want, though I'm sure it's prob still on the front page.

Really want to know if they're still gonna get into games. Want GameFly back, but if Netflix can offer a better price I'm all over it

Edit: Oops, nevermind. That number was from when they did the split back in July. But yeah, I'd expect the number to be about the same anyway

I was one of those million. Nothing good to stream and we use Redbox now and don't even use that enough to spend $8/month.

Netflix is down 800K subscribers from three months ago, and just took a pretty big stock hit. I'm pretty sure nobody's shocked that they lost customers, but they've still got well over 20 million.

Hopefully, they're done making retarded decisions and can get back to delivering awesome content.
