I pretty much don't listen to critics at all. I hate most of the indie shit the critics love, for instance, as I find it to be pretentious and boring. IE, Kings of Leon were nominated for god know how many Grammys. Hate them.

I don't bother with critics - if I like something, I like it.

I'll give anything a try. If I like it, I'll listen to it...if I hate it, I'll turn off the song.

I purchase a few magazines just to see interviews and new releases coming soon, but don't ever read reviews.

i'll read reviews, but generally only after i've listened to the album for myself and already have an opinion on it. they don't really influence by opinion in terms of whether i like something or not, but i do use them as a guide to find some new music.

sometimes i'll read bad reviews of albums that i really like just so that i can get all worked up about it

Kings of Leon aren't indie. They are signed to Sony Music ffs. That is like the complete antithesis of being indie.

Anyway. This.

I don't really find myself being influenced by what I've read about an album. I keep it in mind, but I don't let it define my opinion.

I meant more the "indie rock" kind of sound.

"Indie rock" is not a particular sound. It is a loose term used to describe independent bands who have predominantly rock-based influences, but that's about where the affiliation stops. Bands such as Cursive, Pinback, Minus the Bear, and Modest Mouse would all be considered "indie rock", but none of them sound anything like each other.

I get my music by word of mouth. Fuck a critic.

Rolling Stones rated U2's new album like 4 or 5 stars but I find it very mediocre and boring at times. I do read magazines and do consider their opinions. But I would rather choose my music.

It also doesn't help that my taste in music is so wildly different from most people I know.

Absolutely Funky sometimes I refuse to listen to commercial main stream music.

What? All you ever post about is mainstream music.

It's not even about that, my music taste is fucked up because I'm a bit of a musical omnivore, but I'm very discerning about what I listen to at the same time.

indie is not a genre ffs

*shrugs* That was just my understanding of it from reading things like Rolling Stone and Wikipedia. I don't listen to much of that sort of music so you've probably a better understanding of it than I do.

It was a failed attempt to get along with the masses.

If the critics don't approve, you better believe I won't be buying it.

I disagree with everything Rollingstone Magazine reviews. Everything. That magazine has gone so far down hill its not even funny anymore.

For something as subjective as music I find critics to a complete waste of time.

Considering how drasticaly people's taste in music can contrast, I find no credibility in any music review.

Completely useless profession, and the fact that people still listen to them enough to keep them around is ridiculous.

They had TV on the Radio as #1 for the year of 2008 and they are not traceable on Billboard. Playing mind games with me.
