View Full Version : Sometimes I feel like I do not exist when I listen to music

I guess mostly with post-rock kind of stuff like Godspeed You! Black Emperor and the Arcade Fire but sometimes I will just sit there and stare into nothing and feel like everything is meaningless or something. Sometimes I will just go into some random field or woods or by a lake or somewhere where I have no idea where I am and I will just sit there and think that music is playing and not even contemplate anything, just sit there and feel nothing. I don't know. Do you do this?

I do this while driving. Just drove aimlessly for 3 hours yesterday, like to "upstate NY" or something listening 2 music. Mad relaxing.

I used to do this. Then I figured out that there was a point in the drive when I snapped out of wanting to be driving around aimlessly listening to music, or even just walking around campus, and at that point I'm stuck driving back bored and kind of pissed and it ruins the whole exercise. So I figured out that I needed to set a limit, or go about half the distance I thought I would go before boredom would set in. That way I would get back just as I was ready to be done.

I have to focus while driving though. Like I said in that other thread sometimes I will sit at a traffic light at 2 in the morning and kinda stare into nothing but I still have to make conscious decisions and also there are other people around and I realized I hate when strangers are around me.

Yeah "word" @ this.
And AssMan I just drive on the highway. Traffic lights and stop signs and stuff kill my flow cause they snap you back into reality. If you are on a huge ass empty highway though it is amazing.

I do this with atmospheric instrumental stuff like Explosions in the Sky, and Mono.
I think its actually pretty healthy to do this from time to time.

What do you "do" Fignuts. Do you just sit there or do you do things. Sometimes I feel like music is just playing inside my head. It is depressing but kind of refreshing afterwards.

Nah, cause if I do anything it distracts me from the music and takes away from the illusion.
A lot of times I just shut my eyes, or check the sky, if I'm outside. And it doesn't feel lke the muic is in my head, but it doesn't feel like I'm wearing headphones either.
It's more like the world has it's own background music or something. This is also due to my awesome headphones, as I doubt it would feel like that, with cheap shitty ones.

What music do you listen to when you feel this way anyway AssMan?

He said it in the first post. Post-rock stuff like arcade fire.

Dunno, doesn't work as well for me if there are lyrics. They are a distraction, as I have to think about what they are saying.

Completely agree with the Fignuts. I agree this is kinda healthy for the mind. Though, I find when I'm in a car I can't do the don't care about anything else. Though, if we had massive interstate roads like through Arizona here, that WOULD change. But right now I have 2 states with music. Either I'm full on into it rocking out or the other where I'm in a vegetative state.
The best times I've had is listening to chill out music on holiday twice in a private villa. Stars above, beach close. But I'm not so rich, so this is exclusive when it happens and adds to why I love it so much. Chicane, Leftfield, Global Communication, Carbon Based Lifeforms, my own music and 80's stuff are the order of the night for me.
Also, when hiking with friends up mountains / camping out, some nice chill out tunes really work there.

Yeah, I listen to music when I want to "Get away."
During the summer, its coming up so I'ma do it again, I'd drive to Hampton Beach (About a 40 minute drive) and just blast music while listening. Same thing Triple A does. I'd drive tehre and just drive around for an hour listening to everything.
Whatever mood I'm in, I can listen to anything that I like. For example, if I'm pissed off and I listen to Soilwork or something, that would relax me, if I'm depressed and I listen to something thats sad, it would relax me. Music doesnt really put me in any mood, it just overall relaxes me. I realized the other day that I'd walk for hours if I have music. Its awesome.

I used to do it jogging around campus at the dead of night. Pretty nice experience because usually the school is bustling with people. Occasionally the odd person would creep in and it did not feel like we were even on the same planet.
